Ancient Egypt (Sacred Symbols) Review

Ancient Egypt (Sacred Symbols)

At first glance this miniature Thames and Hudson treasure seems like a greeting card, but the excellent color photographs and succint text provide a miniature tour of some of the finest jewels of ancient craft. The book is not large enough for more esorteric commentary, but the fine pictures display details welcomed by modern designers and metal smiths. This highly portable work is an excellent addition to any collector's library.

"Sacred Symbols" is a series of volumes that introduce the ancient, universal wisdoms of humankind. Symbol and ritual go to the heart of human experience. Throughout history humans have developed elaborate symbolic systems to help allay their fear of the unknown and to tap the deep well-springs of spirituality. Today, people are discovering the relevance of these belief systems to life in the 1990s. This volume covers the symbols of Ancient Egypt. The whole observable world was, for the Ancient Egyptians, a symbolic representation. From the sun and the river Nile, which gave them food and sustenance, to the animal kingdom and even architecture, different phenomena were seen to have hidden meanings. Symbolism, at its deepest level, was the means by which the Egyptians interpreted the nature of life itself - the creation, the after-life and the struggle between good and evil.

The Ancient Egyptians felt close to their pets : some were given names. Dogs and cows, cats and monkeys were all cherished by their owners. Horses were status symbols. Exotic animals were regarded with awe. This book explains the importance of animals in the daily lives of the Egyptian peasants and among the royal court. A well documented, recommended book for all.

The Egyptian Pyramid Mystery Is Solved: Volume 1: The Mysteries Review

The Egyptian Pyramid Mystery Is Solved: Volume 1: The Mysteries

I rate this book a 2, because I am frustrated. I bought this book online hoping to find some answers to teach my class. However, all I found were better articulated questions and more questions. So if you want to see, in written form, every possible question relating to the pyramids, this book is for you. THERE ARE NO ANSWERS IN THIS BOOK. Furthermore, I think there needs to be a big disclaimer explaining that this book is just one grand, expensive "teaser" to the real book, volume two. Finally, I am quite curious to see if there is a volume two or is this just more sound and fury signifying nothing.

The Gods of Egypt Review

The Gods of Egypt

I have always considered Traunecker's work to be of the highest quality. He has an insight into the mechanics of ancient Egyptian cosmologies, theologies, and mythologies that is both direct and free of unnecessary random (and rambling) thought. His assessments are clinical but always interesting, and his work on the El Qa'la temple site is NOT to be missed by anyone who can get their hands on IFAO's pub. Be that as it may, this short book packs a scholarly punch. All of Traunecker's hard-earned, on-site assessments of the gods of ancient Egypt -- their cults, qualities, relevance, and destinies -- can be found in rather tidy, enlightening fashion. A must-have quick reference for many of its tidbits...though Dr. Traunecker does contradict at least one or two minor points he previously asserted in some of his published work. Bottom line -- Immortals (and Immortalettes) of Ancient Egypt from one of the best pros in the business! Get it.

In no fewer than 64 pages, this book provides a history of mummification from the Predynastic era to the Roman period. Tomb robberies, animal mummification, funerary customs and methods are discussed. Illustrated in black and white, it also includes a list of museums where mummies are exhibited, as well as a short bibliography. A must for everyone's collection.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Reading Book for Beginners Review

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Reading Book for Beginners
Average Reviews:

This book has only one good thing: it gives original texts in hieroglyphics from various periods of Egypt. But, many scholars have found that Budge's system is outdated and unreliable. So, if you can't decipher hieroglyphics, I wouldn't reccomend buying this book. Most of all, he doesn't even give translations for all the texts! He gives 8 out of the 20 scripts in english. Heck, the guy's been dead for 100 years, and we've made new discoveries in deciphering Ancient Egyptian. There are many other authors on hieroglyphics that are much more accurate in their translations. Don't be like me and waste your money on this horrible book.
