Answers to these questions are explored in this book as well as Bauval's journey with dealing with the bureaucracy of Egyptian historical authorities. This book is more of hypothetical book when explaining these mysteries than representations of fact. Bauval feels an intrinsic connection between all these and explores possibilities based on age old allegories and myths.

In answering these questions, Bauval postulates the Great Sphinx was created with superior knowledge of technology and architecture taught by another race. This race is the question of great debate and Bauval eventually settles on the Atlantians; a mythical society which technologically advanced. The postulation of the 10,000 BCE creation of the Sphinx and the hypothesis of hidden Atlantian scrolls hidden in the Secret Chamber in the Great Pyramid are the culmination of his hope to find the basis of humanity's genius. We might never know since we might never reach the innards of the Secret Chamber.

This is a great exploration into the unknown and gives credence to what would otherwise be wild guesswork. By providing a good basis, Bauval holds his readers in suspense as to what exactly is in the Secret Chamber. Perhaps such secrets would be discovered with greater technology in the coming years, but if you want a historical episode combined with mythical and hypothetical guesswork, you might want to read this book. I enjoyed it but the end of this book left me with a great pang of loss for what we could have discovered had we opened the Chamber. For that, this book was a great tease, but otherwise, it is a good book.

(More customer reviews)Hancock's book is an entertaining account of an enthusiast who, from his own admission, was largely ignorant of his subject when he set out to discover the truth about it. The book has three main flaws. Whether by design or cultural self-centeredness, Hancock is too interested in searching for Knights Templar involvement, although the so-called Templar crosses in Ethiopia/Eritrea date from the 5th century AD. Linking the Ark to medieval Europeans sells books [Munro-Hay's Aksum (1991) and The Ark of the Covenant (1999) are far more informative but don't sell outside academia because European historical romanticism is absent in his works]. Secondly, Hancock had little understanding of the Kebra Nagast, which is a combination of two separate works, the Sheba-Menelik Cycle dating from oral (10th century BC) and written (pre-400BC) Semitic sources (Josephus summarises it (ca.90AD); and the Caleb Cycle (ca 518 AD). When Isaac's team compiled the Kebra Nagast around 1314 AD they used an Arabic Sheba-Menelik Cycle and a Ge'ez Caleb Cycle and then put in their own comments to try and make sense of the bizarre geography of the Sheba-Menelik Cycle. This included references to Cairo and Alexandria, which didn't exist in Solomon's day, something Hancock overlooked.Hancock is hardly alone in his third and major miscalculation. It is now generally accepted in mainstream archaeology that no evidence exists in Israel/Palestine of the events and places described in the Old Testament up until the Babylonian captivity. The site of modern day Jerusalem in Solomon's day was covered by a few small villages. There was no great city and nothing has been found of Omri's even more magnificent capital in Samaria. Historical linguistics, Tamil trade words in Hebrew, the lack of Egyptian words in Hebrew, the history of the Iron-Age (The Hebrews of Joshua were iron-age invaders of Canaan but were supposed to have fled bronze age Egypt), 11th century BC political-economic conditions, the name for the Ark in Ge'ez, the pattern of ancient Jewish settlement, the Saudi Gazette of Place Names, inscriptions on the Ethiopian plateau, remnant Judaic populations in northern Somalia and Eritrea, the history of the Queen of Sheba (three are mentioned in the Tigre inscriptions) and the extraordinary geographical references all point to the true location of Solomon's kingdom being between Taima and the Yemen border, in West Arabia, not Israel/Palestine. The Ark was probably stolen from a sanctuary near Abha in Arabia. If Hancock's hypothesis of a theft from the site of present Jerusalem it is difficult to accept that the Ark, reputedly the most dangerous weapon on the planet and in the hands of a small group of hunted desperadoes, would be casually waved all the way through tightly controlled Dynastic Egypt which was ruled by Solomon's own father in law. Hancock suggests the Ark was in the hands of the Elephantine Aramaic-speaking Jewish garrison in the 5th century BC who many commentators believe introduced Judaism to Ethiopia. However the Tigre inscriptions testify to a mixed Hebrew/Sheba population ruled by kings and queens of Shebans around 700 BC, which seems to corroborate the events in the Sheba-Menelik Cycle. Personally I believe the Sheba-Menelik Cycle pre-dates the Old Testament, which was first written around 400 BC without vowels and eventually standardised with vowels between 500-950 AD. Nevertheless, Hancock's work on the Ark in Ethiopia is very informative. What he has missed is a chance to show that the history of the Ark is the key to the true location of the Old Testament.

Heaven's Mirror: Quest for the Lost Civilization Review

(More customer reviews)This is no mere picture book and Hancock is no Velikovsky. This book has a message of pivotal importance to all humans. It rolls back the horizon of human knowledge to unknown epochs, to a prior high-civilization with technological skills we may not even possess today. Hancock's claim is no less than that. He proves that the monumental layouts of ancient Tiwanaku, Gizeh and Ankor are actually based on star-patterns from 10,500 B.C. and that they contain the coded numbers of the earth's 26,000 year precessional zodiac cycle. Talk about ante-diluvian amnesia! If this theory is correct, then a high civilization existed at or before the 11th Millennium B.C., located in the equatorial regions, with the ability to travel world-wide, while most other humans were still in the stone age. One may ask why are there no inscriptions in stone from this civilization? That mystery may be resolved in due course. More importantly, I think this basic hypothesis is very plausible. With new dating techniques, we must now reevaluate the entire basis of pre-history which, until now, been based on stale eurocentric + mid-eastern cultural preconceptions limited to notions about ice caps and Cro-Magnons inexplicably leading to the rise of the Sumerians, Babylonians, through a series of Indus valley migrations. These findings will surely force the world's archeologists to reappraise those areas of the planet not covered by ice in the period 20,000 to 10,000 BC. I predict that the impact of this theory over the long term may mirror that of Darwin's Origin of the Species. Heaven's Mirror is a disturbing master-work in every respect. My sincere wish is that conventional archeologists should hold back from scorning Mr. Hancock. I ask them to open up to the new evidence with equanimity and address it with a scientific rather than emotive response.

This book is an excellent follow-up to the author's previous THE ORION MYSTERY. I believe that he does have something here that deserves attention. Egyptologists have never been in agreement over the reason for the placement of the pyramids, their relative sizes at Giza, their orientation, etc. Bauval has provided a "unified [pyramid] field theory" to account for all of the above without forcing the issue. Even the Zoser statue, the Sphinx, and other works of "funerary" sculpture are given new meaning vis-a-vis their positioning. A must for anyone interested in this area of Antiquity.Prof. Lewis M. (More customer reviews)I found this collection of essays and articles to be a concise and straight forward exploration of alternative approaches to a variety of disciplines. Though already familiar with some of the names and theories, it served to bring into sharp focus the quintessential position of each author regarding their chosen field of endeavor, as well as revealing their passion for the same. Even if you are familiar with Hancock, Bauval, Collins, Shoch, and others, one gets a real feel for where their coming from that may not be evident in some of their longer and more involved works.
To any one not familiar with the work of the authors presented, this collection also serves as a fine introduction to alternative views to the status quo theories of a wide range of modern sciences. Whether it's the pyramids and their purpose, the effects of cosmic pulses on consciousness, or the flawed history of the first americans, each presentation leaves one with plenty of food for thought as well as intelligently challenging our ideas about what we've come to believe about each. All in all - Well worth your time and money.
