Ancient Mathematics (Sciences of Antiquity Series) Review

Ancient Mathematics (Sciences of Antiquity Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This book is not so much a history of ancient Greek mathematicians and their work (although that is part of it) as it is a sociological study of how mathematics was present as a cognitive method and how it was applied for practical and social purposes in ancient Greece and Rome. It is a look at how mathematics was used as a means of structuring the mental, physical, and social life during that period. If your interest is principally in the mathematics of ancient Greek mathematicians, then the book may seem diffuse and beside the point. It is, though, a clearly written and reflective book, and it brings into focus how mathematics is ever present and how it pervades our lives.

The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia Review

The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia
Average Reviews:

The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia appears to be the updated version of the Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World, which received high accolades from Amazon reviewers and others. I've compared the two books. This "replacement" book is better laid out and has better graphics than its predecessor.
The colorful text highlights periods in history from 40,000 B.C. to the present. It is divided chronologically into segments:"The Ancient World" 40,000 BC to 500 BC, and The Classical World, 499 BC - AD 500, Early Middle Ages, 501- 1100, Trade and Empire1601-1707 , Revolution and Independence 1708- 1835, etc.
I like that it covers all regions of the world, including African history, and Indian, Asian, South American, Judea, etc, rather than the typical European history we're all used to. The information is broad in each section and includes wars, empires and dynasties, architecture, culture and arts, science and technology, maps, small biographies of important people in those times. I like that the book is chronological and also broad based in its approach. Each reference takes a full page or full two pages, with easy to find headings at the top of the page. There is a time line across the heading of each page so you know where you are in history. There's a nice "ready reference" in the back with quick notations of rulers and popes and the time period they ruled. I highly recommend this book for middle school years and adults who want a cursory but thought-provoking look at history. This book makes you want to delve more deeply into the different time periods. It's a good starting place for beginning your understanding of ancient history and getting a sense of time and place with regard to history. I homeschool and this is a great resource.

Ancient Sorceries and Other Weird Stories Review

Ancient Sorceries and Other Weird Stories
Average Reviews:

Algernon Blackwood really is the most frightening to me of all horror story writers. He has a way of capturing mood and setting that outdoes any of his many followers (among whom H. P. Lovecraft was proudly one of the most preeminent). The three most famous stories in this book--the title story, "The Wendigo," and, above all, "The Willows"--emblematize his skill. The title story is set in an ancient French town where the townspeople seem to have a peculiar habit of transforming into something else, and authentically captures the creepiness of medieval towns at night. Even more frightening is "The Wendigo": set in the North Woods, it realizes whatever fears you've ever had walking alone in the snowy woods. "The Willows" was Lovecraft's nomination for the finest horror story ever written, and it clearly may have inspired THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Two canoesmen traversing through the Middle European forests find themselves stranded on an island by unknown forces that won't let them leave. Part of the pleasure of Blackwood is that he never overdoes it: he has a marvelous light touch, and reads quite crisply at the level of the sentence.

Modern Egyptian Art 1910-2003 Review

Modern Egyptian Art 1910-2003
Average Reviews:

I was pleasanty surprized to find a collection of some of the greatest Egyptian modern artists all in one book. To my knowledge, Liliane Karnouk's book is the only book published documeting the work of some of the outstanding modern Egyptian artists.
Her chapter about sculpturer, Mahmoud Mokhtar, including his famous "Egyptian Awakening" statue (inspired by Ancient Egyptian monuments) is simply marvellous. The collection of bronze sculptures by Adam Henein is exquisite.
The art work by modern painters such as the late Kamal Khalifa and Inji Aflatoon, among others, depicts their brilliant art work despite personal suffering, as described in the biographies of each artist Liliane Karnouk included in this book.
Although it is impossible to encompass all modern Egyptian artists in one book, particularly as Egypt is continuously delivering new and evolving talents, but unfortunately Liliane Karnouk omitted many important artists, e.g. young brilliant sculpturer Mokles Michael, or some of the established artists, such as Ahmed El Rashidi, Adel Thabet, Youssef Raafat, just to mention a few.
Last note: Liliane Karnouk's previous book "Contemporary Egyptian Art" is included fully in her new book. So, if you plan to acquire one of her 2 books, this is the one!

From the early years of the twentieth century, with the rejection of European political and cultural domination in Europe, modern artistic expression in Egypt was influenced by and often reflected the country's growing national consciousness. In the years following the 1952 revolution, wealthy patrons of the arts disappeared from Egypt's cosmopolitan art world and were replaced by the state, which by the 1960s exercised full control over all cultural activities, including the arts. In the 1990s, as elsewhere throughout the world, Egyptian art was affected by general shifts in culture brought about by globalization. The disruption of a sense of place and feelings of belonging were a response to the influx of the challenging and, at times, disquieting information available to whole cultures and communities through new media. Examining the work of over 70 artists from 1910 until the present day, Liliane Karnouk traces the parallel steps of modern Egyptian art and the social and political environment in which that art was and continues to be created. Fully illustrated with over 280 black-and-white and color illustrations, this comprehensive volume is both a feast for the eyes and a mine of information for artists and non-specialists alike.

The Derveni Krater: Masterpiece of Classical Greek Metalwork (Ancient Art and Architecture in Context) Review

The Derveni Krater: Masterpiece of Classical Greek Metalwork (Ancient Art and Architecture in Context)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is the much-needed scholarly volume on a surviving ancient Greek art treasure - the Derveni Krater - an object studied in every credible collegiate and university course on Greek art. This lavish tome is written by Barr-Sharrar, who has already comprehensively studied the Derveni Krater in the peer-reviewed literature, now accessible to all readers. Rare as it is to find one authoritative volume on a single piece of ancient Greek art, it is even more unusual to find so much useful analysis and detail devoted to a special kind of bronze vessel and the full spectrum of Dionysian themes in art. With applicable references from bronzes to sculpture, vase painting and other ancient media, Barr-Sharrar's exquisite book combines the observant eye of the artist with the penetrating mind of the sleuth in examining and contextualizing precursors and the array of corresponding types. Careful in her reconstruction of iconography and provenance as well as her hypotheses of function and meaning for the singular Derveni Krater, Barr-Sharrar has produced a gem for students of Greek art, myth, religion and ancient technology. This book is a great resource for art historians and archaeologists from an author and publisher with the highest critical standards.
