The Egyptians (Art from the Past) Review

Our class is studying ancient Egypt and this book was so entertaining that we caught on to the concepts a lot easier. It also brought to life the meanings of a lot of the symbols we are learning about. It is well written and the instructions are easy to understand.
ALL of the materials needed were easily found around the house, and that makes it even better, becuase you don't have to go out a buy a lot to be able to do the projects.
I especially enjoyed the section on Cat Mummies along with the Canopic Jars. It goes along great with another book called Cat Mummies.
Even if you don't do the crafts, you will enjoy reading about the different items, as they explain more about the symbols of ancient Egypt. I hope you like this book as much as our class did!

What's the connection between the stars of the Orion Constellation and the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt? How old is the Great Sphinx? What is contained in the secret chamber?
Answers to these questions are explored in this book as well as Bauval's journey with dealing with the bureaucracy of Egyptian historical authorities. This book is more of hypothetical book when explaining these mysteries than representations of fact. Bauval feels an intrinsic connection between all these and explores possibilities based on age old allegories and myths.
(Spoiler ahead)
In answering these questions, Bauval postulates the Great Sphinx was created with superior knowledge of technology and architecture taught by another race. This race is the question of great debate and Bauval eventually settles on the Atlantians; a mythical society which technologically advanced. The postulation of the 10,000 BCE creation of the Sphinx and the hypothesis of hidden Atlantian scrolls hidden in the Secret Chamber in the Great Pyramid are the culmination of his hope to find the basis of humanity's genius. We might never know since we might never reach the innards of the Secret Chamber.
(Spoiler over)
This is a great exploration into the unknown and gives credence to what would otherwise be wild guesswork. By providing a good basis, Bauval holds his readers in suspense as to what exactly is in the Secret Chamber. Perhaps such secrets would be discovered with greater technology in the coming years, but if you want a historical episode combined with mythical and hypothetical guesswork, you might want to read this book. I enjoyed it but the end of this book left me with a great pang of loss for what we could have discovered had we opened the Chamber. For that, this book was a great tease, but otherwise, it is a good book.

Bauval asks the questions, is there a secret chamber in the Great Pyramid?, how is the star of David linked to the new world order of the Freemasons? and is the Second Coming of Christ linked to the opening of the fabled Hall of Records?

Gail Gibbons' Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs is a children's picturebook that explores daily life and belief in the afterlife among the people of ancient Egypt. Aptly researched and presented in plain terms along with color illustrations stylistically reminiscent of ancient egyptian art, Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs is as educational as it is enthralling. A highly recommended nonfiction book to whet young minds' curiosity about world history, Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs would make a popular addition to any school or community library system collection.

Who hasn't wondered how the Great Pyramids came to be? In this stunningly illustrated, richly detailed book, David Macaulay skillfully shows one way they could have been built. I had ordered the book for our family's study of ancient Egypt, based on a recommendation in The Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Egypt, which raved about it. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was stunned at the detail and care of the drawings and fascinated by the accounts. Although the long descriptions were daunting for my then-first grader, the illustrations caught her eye, and her older siblings dug into it with enthusiasm.

Tempest & Exodus Review

Tempest and Exodus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sequel to Jesus: Last of the Pharoahs is more reasonable than the former. Mostly, because Ralph Ellis concentrates on one period of time only and takes more time to reason about this single issue. It is about the volcano's eruption on (Greek) Thera/Santorini playing catalyst for the religious strife within ancient Egypt, leading to the Hyksos' exodus(es). Prominently featured is the identification of Biblical Mt. Sinai with the Great Pyramid of Giza. Which functions both, as the template for the portable ark of the covenant of the Jews and circling procession like around today's Kabaa (to be precise, a different pyramid is suggested for the latter tradition). All of which sounds..., well... more than a bit unusual. The reasoning of the author merits attention, however, maybe only to be found out later that it was important for the way to "the truth" than actually representing the last word on everything touched.
I read the 2nd revised edition of 2006 (of the original book of 2000) and I advise to read the respective latest edition, as the author revises his books frequently. As such, some of my and others' criticism may get revised in later editions.
The major problem with Ralph Ellis' books is that they predominantly depent on linguistics as the basis for his hypotheses. On the one hand, this methodology offers largely untapped opportunities for revelations from the perspective of the current lack of historical knowledge about those Imes (times). On the other hand, these hypotheses should get confirmed by other means, which this book does a little bit more than other works of the author, yet still not sufficiently. For a simple reason: Linguistics offer a potential minefield for folk etymologies. Additionally, Ralph Ellis is very liberal in averring connections and changing words to fit each other. He will be right at times, but hardly all the way. He also likes to find proof for this theories, never to be wrong in the end. That is very suspicious in itself, smacking of constructivism, for the odds are slim that a scientist is right about his initial assumptions all the time. Even though I have to say, this book currently reads as mostly comprehendable.
Mostly means not all the time. One example for his falling for an folk etymology is his reproduction of the historic legend that the croissant is derived from Hungarian bakers thwarting a conquering attempt of the Budapest besieging Turks, celebrating themselves with a food product in the form of the Islamic crescent. This goes back to a supposed event of 1686. Unfortunately for this legend, this wasn't known before 1948, when Alfred Gottschalk wrote that in a book. Which was totally fabricated. As can be seen by the fact that 10 years previously he wrote the same story in another book ("Larousse gastronomique"), but this time placing the events in Austrian Vienna three years previously. In reality, the croissant, which is supposed to be derived from the crescent, hasn't been heard of in France before the 19th century. And in Austria the template for croissants has been known many centuries before any Turk army appeared on the horizon. Ironically maybe connected to even earlier monastery bakers celebrating Easter with this product looking like horns of an animal, as the original Austrian/German name suggests - which would have been interesting for Ralph Ellis to find/construct some other connection to ancient Egypt. But I do not necessarily want to encourage him any further... This paragraph by no means debunks the entire book, as Ellis' hypotheses do not depent the croissant. It is just that anything whatsoever I know about which Ralph Ellis writes about in his books, he gets wrong without further question. Which makes me wonder about the things he writes, nobody else knows anything about. In other words: I think most in this book sounds plausible, but everything should be checked independently. Even Ellis himself corrects his previous books. For example, in Thoth: Architect of the Universe he locates Atlantis in the Atlantic. In this book, he corrects himself in locating Atlantis among the Greek islands. And in later books, such as in Cleopatra to Christ (Jesus was the Great Grandson of Cleopatra) / Scota, Egyptian Queen of the Scots (Ireland and Scotland were founded by an Egyptian Queen) [Two Books in One] he suddenly turns his most prominent theory over that the Hyksos were Egyptians without any migratory background. Simply because new theories of his collide with his former ones. Simply, because, again, he likes to prove his theories by finding the corresponding/constructed evidence. He should revise all of his books more frequently, I may offer... The positive aspect of this is that he himself is showing that prolonged reasoning and research leads to ever new insights and even not quite correct theories are necessary for progress.
By the way: Atlantis???
His reasoning about Sodom and Gomorrha doesn't grow stronger in this book than in the prequel. This time he wants to derive "Sodom" from fornication. Whatever, but here's the message: The original theology of that story is not about any sexual matters whatsoever, it's about greed and not sharing a bit of one's accumulated wealth, going so far as to maltreat any potential one in need.
The bottom line is: This book is worth reading, just don't ingrain anything in it as incontrovertible. The sequel in this series is Solomon, Falcon of Sheba: The Tombs of King David, King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba Discovered (original title).

The dramatic discovery of a large biblical quotation on an ancient Egyptian stele. When compared to its Biblical equivalent, the text appears to be two separate accounts, Egyptian and Israelite, of a conference about how the Biblical exodus should be organized. This sequel to Jesus, Last of the Pharaohs also contains.• the secret name of God• the location of Mt. Ararat• illustrations of Noah's ArkThe quotation thus has fundamental implications for both history and theology because it explains:• why the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant were constructed• why the exodus started• where Mt. Sinai was located• who the God of the Israelites was• who the Israelites really were• why the Torah, Bible and Koran were written.

Abusir: The Realm of Osiris Review

Abusir: The Realm of Osiris
Average Reviews:

To the west of the ancient capitol Memphis lies its necropolis area comprising Saqqara, and immediately to its north, Abusir. On a clear day (wind from the east) you can see the pyramids of Giza large on the horizon, 10 kilometers further north. History at Abusir runs from tombs of the first dynasty into Muslim times, but it is uniquely important for the 5th dynasty, where many pharaohs chose to build their pyramids, and also the sun temples that characterize this dynasty. It is claimed that a line along the three pyramids of Giza crosses Iunu (Heliopolis, whose site is in Northern Cairo) and on Abusir another three pyramids also align on Iunu. From each site, an ancient viewer could see the gold tipped spire of the important sun temple there. (Stephen Quirke discusses such alignments in his book: The Cult of Ra.)
This fine book describes the results, and the difficulties, the missed discoveries, and the satisfying moments of the archaeologists. Starting by describing what little is known about the site of Memphis, it then relates Abusir to Saqqara and Giza. A major part of the book discusses the pyramids, the sun temples, and relationships in the families of the pharaohs. A puzzle about the important late 4th dynasty queen Khentkhus, known from Giza, is elucidated by finds at Abusir. A fortuitous architectural glitch has lead to preservation of many papyrus document fragments, which have greatly informed scholars about the operation of the temple priests and the royal court. A tomb of a royal hair dresser who rose to high rank, another of a `traitor' in Persian times who built a very elaborate shaft tomb to protect against robbers (it didn't protect, but sure hindered the archaeologists!) and other tombs of lesser ranked persons are treated.
The book's nicely sized format allows splendid photos--17 are double pages, 47 more occupy a full page, or nearly so. Some photos have high artistic merit, others are of small finds in the tombs. Diagrams. drawings, and maps abound.

How can I be the first one to review this book!? This is one of the best books on Atlantis ever written! You have Colin Wilson, master writer of over 50 books, and Rand Flem-Ath, genius of "When The Sky Fell", both working together to write this piece, and no one reviews it? Holy crap!
Just know this. If you can read this book and still look me in the face and tell me Atlantis wasn't real, I will 100% believe that the Earth has no future.

In 1982, the American scholar Charles Hapgood made an astonishing claim to a young librarian, Rand Flem-Ath - that civilization was almost 100,000 years old and he had the evidence to prove it. Before he could substantiate this remarkable assertion, Hapgood died. Together with fellow author Colin Wilson, Flem-Ath set out to track down the truth behind the scholar's statements. Their study of the world's most sacred sites - Stonehenge, the Great Pyramids and many others - led them to an amazing discovery. Far from being built by local people for local reasons, these monuments formed an undeniable geometrical pattern. This is turn implied the existence of an ancient advanced civilization, one that existed before the Flood that destroyed Atlantis and whose knowledge of the world was far wider than had previously been thought possible. This book deciphers this remarkable code and the reasons behind it: the attempt by scientists from Atlantis to preserve a legacy of their civilisation. The book presents its argument with enormous persuasiveness - namely that our civilization is not the first to occupy the planet, nor is it likely to be the last.

Ancient Egypt: Its Culture and History Review

This is an informative and comprehensive introduction to Egyptology. Starting with an analysis of the Nile and how this majestic river is pivotal to understanding this ancient culture, White brings us through a descriptive tour of each of the important contributors to Ancient Egyptian culture; the Pharoh, the Priest, the Architect, the Craftsman and the commonly disregarded peasant. This book, albeit occasionally too factual, has a wealth of information included in its mere 200 pages. The three historical chapters are a welcome synthesis to all of the factual data that was presented earlier. The fold-out summary of the major Pharohs, architectural advances and other contemporary cultures is great for keeping all of the important dates, places and people straight. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the wonders of Egypt.

Oxbow books have reviewed as follows:
"This thesis, sure to prove controversial, examines the geometry of Old Kingdom Royal tomb architecture, arguing for far greater levels of mathematical sophistication than hitherto admitted. Adding his own contribution to the Black Athena debate, Lightbody also claims that the debts in measurement, geometry and mathematics which the Greeks owe to the Egyptians has also not been fully recognised, not least due to an overfocusing on philological evidence."

Egyptian Tomb Architecture:
The Archaeological Facts of Pharaonic Circular Symbolism
By David I Lightbody
British Archaeological Reports
International Series S1852
ISBN 978 1 4073 0339 0
Xiii+88 pages; 77 figures, maps, plans, drawings and photographs; 4 data appendices
The objective of this monograph is to describe and explain the meanings underlying some otherwise anomalous
archaeological data drawn from the study of Ancient Egypt. An explanation for the phenomena observed has
hitherto remained elusive.
The data is principally concerned with royal funerary architecture from the Old Kingdom, and the underlying
systems of measurement and geometry that were employed therein. As well as providing a description and
explanation for the data, this work also has the objective of providing the first synthesis of related
cultural information drawn from several different textual and archaeological resources. The general subject
matter is the pharaonic funerary architecture from Old Kingdom Egypt, and the work focuses specifically on
the circular proportions deliberately incorporated into the tomb designs by the architects.
In 1940, the famous Egyptologist Professor Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie wrote, regarding these proportions
that: 'but these relations of area and of circular ratios are so systematic that we should grant they were
in the builder's design' (Petrie: Wisdom of the Egyptians 1940: 30).
So Petrie concluded that the circular proportions in the funerary monuments were deliberate, yet he never ventured
an explanation for the phenomenon.
Now that the publication is in print, I can finally reveal that the underlying symbolism expressed in these proportions,
and deliberately included in the primary dimensions of the monuments by the architects, was that of the 'shen ring' symbol.
The shen ring represented 'eternal protection', and by including this symbolism into the architecture, at the sarcophagus,
tomb and overall structure levels, the Egyptians were incorporating a protective perimeter around the pharaonic burial
place in a symbolic form.
The more familiar 'cartouche', that is a rounded oval shape always shown protecting the pharaoh's name, is in fact a modified
shen ring, and so we can see that the related ideas of pharaonic protection extended from the hieroglyphs naming the living king,
to his funerary architecture, and yet represented the same ideas of eternal protection for the ruler.
The book details all of the supporting facts and evidence for the first time, and critiques all existing publications that
have not reached this conclusion previously.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject matter, additional effort has been made to ensure that
the data and discussion is accessible to scholars and keen amateurs from all related disciplines.
Contents:
1) Fundamentals of Ancient Egyptian mathematics and architecture
2) The evidence and facts of Egyptian circular symbolism
3) The symbolism
4) Methodology, analysis and discussion of mathematics
5) Arguments from authorities
6) Archaeology and philology; fieldwork and deskwork
7) Conclusion
8) Appendix 1: Secondary issues
9) Appendix 2: Social context of early Egyptology
10 Appendix 3: Egyptian and Greek mathematics
11) Appendix 4 Quotes from the Greeks
12) Reference
The publication is currently available only from Archaeopress through Hadrian Books at a price of £25.00.,
but will be made available through Amazon in due course.
This should help demystify some of the issues and debunk some of the speculation. More to follow.

Enjoy!
Dave Lightbody.

Egyptian Heritage: Based on the Edgar Cayce Readings

This book provides a concise summary of the Edgar Cayce material about the origins of the Egyptian civilization. It is a very strange subject and may not appeal to some readers because it is so foreign to the way the world is today. However Cayce fans should enjoy it.
According to Cayce these events took place around 10,500 BC which is a long time ago for trying to figure out what really happened based just on archeological evidence.
Edgar Cayce himself in the form of the Atlantean priest Ra Ta is a central figure in the story. It is my understanding that Cayce was the reincarnation of the Egyptian god Osiris and Ra Ta had a god like role in all of this. In fact without Ra Ta the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the many other mysterious monuments and temples in Egypt may not even exist today.
Cayce's statements about Atlantis and ancient Egypt answer many questions but they raise so many more. There are many, many details which Cayce never elaborated on. In some cases Cayce stated that it was not even possible to explain certain things using verbal language.

Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts: The Mystical Tradition of Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

Jeremy Naydler has rescued the deep wisdom of Egypt - experiential insight into the deeper reality and how we can travel there for initiation and empowerment - from the Egyptologists. For all of us who have long suspected, or remembered, that the palace tombs and pyramid texts of Egypt are about much, much more than funerary arrangements, here is ringing confirmation that the Egyptians traveled beyond the gates of death while very much alive, not only to bring back first-hand knowledge of the afterlife, but to enter into sacred union with the gods and enthrone their power in the body, and so acquire the spiritual and sexual potency to marry the worlds. Shamanic Wisdom of the Pyramid Texts is a splendid melding of fine scholarship and passionate engagement with themes that are vitally important to us today. It is must reading not only for lovers of Egypt, students of shamanism and religion, and modern practitioners of soul travel, but for all of us who hunger for the real history of humanity's encounters with the more-than-human

A radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts as shamanic mystical wisdom rather than funerary rituals' Reveals the mystical nature of Egyptian civilization denied by orthodox Egyptologists' Examines the similarity between the pharaoh's afterlife voyage and shamanic journeying' Shows shamanism to be the foundation of the Egyptian mystical traditionTo the Greek philosophers and other peoples of the ancient world, Egypt was regarded as the home of a profound mystical wisdom. While there are many today who still share that view, the consensus of most Egyptologists is that no evidence exists that Egypt possessed any mystical tradition whatsoever. Jeremy Naydler's radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts--the earliest body of religious literature to have survived from ancient Egypt--places these documents into the ritual context in which they belong.Until now, the Pyramid Texts have been viewed primarily as royal funerary texts that were used in the liturgy of the dead pharaoh or to aid him in his afterlife journey. This emphasis on funerary interpretation has served only to externalize what were actually experiences of the living, not the dead, king. In order to understand the character and significance of the extreme psychological states the pharaoh experienced--states often involving perilous encounters with alternate realities--we need to approach them as spiritual and religious phenomena that reveal the extraordinary possibilities of human consciousness. It is the shamanic spiritual tradition, argues Naydler, that is the undercurrent of the Pyramid Texts and that holds the key to understanding both the true nature of these experiences and the basis of ancient Egyptian mysticism.
