Freemasonry: Rituals, Symbols & History of the Secret Society Review

Freemasonry: Rituals, Symbols and History of the Secret Society
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

The Freemasons are the largest fraternal organization in the world, and one of the most well known mystery societies. Author Mark Stavish is an active Freemason, a Thirty-Second degree member of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Knights Templar and the Order of the Eastern Star. Why is this important? Only someone on the inside, someone familiar with the workings of the Freemasons, could provide such cohesive insight into their history, their philosophy, and how their ideals interact with day-to-day life.
The depth of scholarship in this book is reflected, in part, in the acknowledgments section when Stavish speaks of the assistance given to him by Brother Charles S. Canning, Director of the Harry C. Trexler Masonic Library (Allentown, PA). Brother Canning not only performed research for this book, but he also reviewed the manuscript.
In his foreword, Brother Lon Milo DuQuette speaks of an informal gathering of Freemasons at an undisclosed location, in an incredibly beautiful Masonic Temple. Part of his reflection is on the building itself, and its incredible sense of geometry (something that Masonic Temples are known for). DuQuette indicates that Masonry is once again becoming a secret society, largely because of public concerns over its esoteric nature. He goes on to say that the only demographic group applying for Masonic membership in significant numbers is that of young men passionately interested in the esoteric mysteries of the Craft.
In his introduction, Stavish notes that the symbols used by Freemasonry have their roots in both Jewish and Christian religious and mystical practices, with the fundamental notion of Freemasonry being that of build or creating. Masonry has a great deal to do with how a man lives his life - with the virtues of faith, hope and charity, as well as the Golden Rule being implicit in all Masons. Stavish states that by the example of improving himself, a Mason improves the world around him. A Mason will also be religiously devoted/mystically inclined. Within himself, each Mason constructs the Temple of Wisdom. The mystical nature of a Mason comes last, according to Stavish, because it is most personal.
In the beginning of this book is a short chapter on how to use it. This impressed me, because it placed the reader on notice that this was not just a book to be read, information assimilated, and book set aside. The information presented here is a beginning, and there is a path to be followed. In "Freemasonry", Stavish presents the events that are behind the origin and growth of Freemasonry, why they are still important today, and how to live a "Masonic" life as a "creator, builder and friend of God and humanity", whether the reader wishes to wear a Masonic apron or not.
It is suggested that the reader have a notebook handy, along with colored pencils or pens. It is suggested that the reader go over the list of recommended books at the end of each chapter, and read one of them. Another suggestion is to pay attention to your dreams - Bravo Mr. Stavish - excellent suggestion! Another suggestion that I heartily concur with is starting each reading session with a prayer.
Covered in this book are the different types of Freemasonry, he history behind the Temple of Solomon, Masonic initiation, sacred geometry, the Masonic Quest, Scottish Rite, Occult Masonry, the York Rite and the Knights Templar, and Freemasonry and the European Occult Revival. Each chapter ends with a listing of Key Points, Assignments - actions that the reader can take, and a suggested reading list.
The appendices include "Sacred Geometry and the Masonic Tradition", by John Michael Greer, Symbols of the Tracing Boards and the Degrees, and Excerpts From "Morals and Dogma" on the Three Degrees of Masonry.
For anyone interested in knowing more about Freemasonry, or perhaps in joining the society, this book is an excellent first step on the path of wisdom.

As one of the world's most famous mysterious societies, Freemasons remain the largest fraternal organization in the world. Some of the most heroic and creative thinkers in history belonged to the order, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Goethe, and Mozart. What links the philosophy of these great minds with the estimated four million Freemasons who actively maintain this ancient brotherhood today?

From sacred geometry to legendary Masonic rites, author and Freemason Mark Stavish divulges the philosophy of Masonry and the moral code that all Masons share. Learn how Masonry's higher degrees, particularly Scottish Rite, were influenced by occult beliefs and practices, and how Masonry is linked to King Solomon, Gothic architecture, magic practice, alchemy, and Qabala. With exercises and suggested readings, this fascinating exploration is an essential learning tool that will answer questions and shed light on other Masonic mysteries, including initiation and the Lost Word.

Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation Review

Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation

This is the second book I have read from Dr Thom Cavalli a perfect companion to his first book Alchemical Psychology. Thom is a master of weaving ancient wisdom with modern psychology and personal growth. The books are easy to read, fascinating and with a great touch of living history. More importantly they are a guide on how to move forward in ones life in a clean way using the wisdom that has been "hidden in plain sight" for Milena. I was fortunate enough to get Embodying Osiris just before I left to Egypt and wow! what an enhancement it was to have with me and to really "feel" what I saw. I also want to add this is not some New Age dribble rather a well researched book based shedding light on mysteries that have always been. I also invite those of you reading this to pick up Dr Thom's first book it is equally as fascinating and helpful. Can't wait for the next one.....

The modern Western movement to embrace Eastern spiritual traditions usually stops with India and the Orient. Westerners have yet to discover the wisdom that dates back even further to ancient Egypt. With a Jungian perspective, clinical psychologist Dr. Thom F. Cavalli plumbs that wisdom through the myth of Osiris, the green-skinned Egyptian god of vegetation and the Underworld. As no one else has done, Cavalli draws on Osiris's death and resurrection as a guide to spiritual transformation. The myth represents the joining of the conscious and the unconscious, the light and the dark, life and death, and shows how to live our temporal existence in service to and anticipation of eternal life. Cavalli sees the ancient art of alchemy - which attempted to turn lead into gold - as the key. The alchemical recipe "solve et coagula" (solution and coagulation) encoded in the myth describes the integration of all parts of a person and the method for achieving an experience of immortality in life and eternal life after death. The Osiris myth thus provides a model for the contemporary quest for individuation, the Jungian term for integrating ego and self, body and soul, in the process of becoming whole.

My Heart My Mother: Death and Rebirth in Ancient Egypt Review

My Heart My Mother: Death and Rebirth in Ancient Egypt

I read the original print of 2000. Alison Roberts clearly prefers to remain on the safe side of egyptology, which concentrates on the myths and rites of ancient Egypt, but excludes the mysticism. At one point, she even laments about that focus in "scholarly" books and goes as far as stating that at least some use of the so called "Book of the Dead" was for an initiation for the very much living. Yet, without the full scale mysticism behind the myths and rites, ancient Egypt cannot get overstood. But then again, this is true for any religion. Yet, any religion is largely practiced - and therefore very real - by the masses to which no mysticism is taught or for whom (quasi universal) mysticism don't say anything. Hence, it gets difficult to rate this book. Clearly, orthodox egyptologists will give more stars than mystics of any branch of religion. As I am a mystic, I would probably give 2 or 3 stars for the first four chapters or 188 pages. However, I bought this book for its final fifth chapter or 36 pages. Which is about the ancient Egyptian source of European alchemy. And here the author leaves the orthodox path for a more progressive view, clearly and very convincingly connecting e.g. the "Splendor Solis" paper to the "Book of Night" and other ancient Egyptian mystic works. The very term "alchemy" shows the Arab origin of "chemistry". Yet, they in turn got it from the Egyptians, and the Jews actually bridged it to Europe as well. Originally not being concerned at all with secular science, but with a lot of spirituality. Which does get explained in this book, minus the very most of mysticism as mentioned. For that connection to overstand, it makes sense to have read the previous chapters in the book. That's why to me personally, this book is worth 4 stars after all.
For those with general interest in all of the book: The title may be a bit misleading as it suggests a much broader spectrum than gets actually covered. The author recommends reading her previous book Hathor Rising: The Power of the Goddess in Ancient Egypt beforehand. Which is about Akhenaten's (Akenten's) revolution. "My Heart My Mother" concerns itself with the "aftermath" (or counter revolution depending on the perspective). Obviously, the author isn't to fond of Akhenaten, mostly for his supposed neglect of female input in his religion branch. (Again, which may due to the author not having a vibe for mysticism, which disregards genders. Akhenaten and his wife are usually depicted in an "androgynous" style.) Yet, Alison Robert's focus narrows further on one temple in Memphis and the Osireion at Abydos. Speaking of which, she uses the orthodox English rendered Greek rendered names of the ancient Egyptian names of god(desse)s and cities.
One of the MANY, MANY examples of the ancient Egyptian branch of religion not to be overstood by reading this non-mystical book is about Seth (Set) killing Osiris (Asar) "for some unstated reason". It isn't about the literal myth, but the symbolism: Seth represents the lower self of everyone which believes in the ego and separations, who hence separates and destructs as in the myth he separates Osiris' body into many pieces. Accordingly, it is besides the point to write about one episode of Seth and his nephew Horus (Heru) as an homosexual encounter and about another with Isis (Aset) and Horus as an incestuous one. Again, the symbolism of what the characters (who are all the ONE, plus all parts of the initiate) stand for is decisive, not the specifics of the exchangeable myth. Besides: All ancient Egyptian deities are meant to be androgynous and all sexuality is more or less incestuous, as couples are often siblings etc. For a mystical approach read e.g. Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts: The Mystical Tradition of Ancient Egypt and Muata Ashby's books, for direct reference for example "African Religion Vol. 3: Memphite Theology".
One advantage Alison Roberts has, though: She is not interpreting ancient Egyptian religion as sex hostile, something many modern mystics attempt to due to a post-Egyptian development of a sex hostile meme pool in religion.
Yet, the bottom line is: If you do not take the phenomenological approach of mysticism towards ancient Egyptian religion and society, you are bound to blind both as polytheistic, pagan and utterly unconcerned with I-n-I (us) today. Instead of seeing the very source of all of today's "world religions" and the very relevance in mystical terms.

Stairway to Heaven: Chinese Alchemists, Jewish Kabbalists, and the Art of Spiritual Transformation Review

Stairway to Heaven: Chinese Alchemists, Jewish Kabbalists, and the Art of Spiritual Transformation

It is easy to look at the mysticism of the ancients and see nothing but unintelligible mumbo-jumbo. But while we are free to reject myth and mysticism as incorrect, we would be foolish to dismiss them as nonsense. There is simply too much articulation, sophistication, and structural rigor to these systems of practice and belief. Scientology they ain't.
But what were the ancients doing? Why did they devote so much time to the stars, the human body, and the connections they believed existed between them? The notion that myth encodes astronomical information was first advanced by Santillana and von Deschend in Hamlet's Mill: An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge And Its Transmission Through Myth. Levenda takes their work a step further by identifying in the various seven-step spiritual traditions of the world's religions a reference to the seven stars of the Big Dipper.
We in the modern West just don't look at the night sky very often. But in our ancestors' "world lit only by fire," the sky was much more important to daily life. For bronze age people sitting around the campfire, the celestial procession must have been a lot like television. Certainly they gave the stars at least the same depth of narrative significance we today find in Lost, the Hills, and professional wrestling. But was there more going on?
If you live in the Northen Hemisphere, Polaris is the fixed point around which the night sky rotates - the crown of the "axis mundi." In a world changed by the weather, the seasons, and inexplicable catastrophes, the Pole Star was the only constant. For people who took the notion of "heaven" literally, the Pole Star was an obvious candidate for the seat of God (or gods, or whatever). Levenda argues that the ancients of all (or many) cultures understood the seven stars of the Big Dipper as the seven-step "stairway to heaven." And he finds in their seven-step rituals a means of transcending the world of impermanence, achieving immortality, and ascending to communion with the Supreme.
This is pretty groundbreaking stuff and Levenda makes his argument in a very precise and scholarly way. This is, however, not the Jerry Bruckheimer-style thrill ride that readers of Sinister Forces-The Nine: A Grimoire of American Political Witchcraft (Sinister Forces) may be anticipating. Like Hamlet's Mill, this is a fairly dry book about one seriously mind-opening idea. Unless you are interested in the details of archaic wisdom traditions and the "connective tissue" between them, you may find yourself skimming. But there's no flakiness here either. This is a book that will be read by serious people for some time to come.

Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts: The Mystical Tradition of Ancient Egypt Review

Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts: The Mystical Tradition of Ancient Egypt

Jeremy Naydler has rescued the deep wisdom of Egypt - experiential insight into the deeper reality and how we can travel there for initiation and empowerment - from the Egyptologists. For all of us who have long suspected, or remembered, that the palace tombs and pyramid texts of Egypt are about much, much more than funerary arrangements, here is ringing confirmation that the Egyptians traveled beyond the gates of death while very much alive, not only to bring back first-hand knowledge of the afterlife, but to enter into sacred union with the gods and enthrone their power in the body, and so acquire the spiritual and sexual potency to marry the worlds. Shamanic Wisdom of the Pyramid Texts is a splendid melding of fine scholarship and passionate engagement with themes that are vitally important to us today. It is must reading not only for lovers of Egypt, students of shamanism and religion, and modern practitioners of soul travel, but for all of us who hunger for the real history of humanity's encounters with the more-than-human

A radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts as shamanic mystical wisdom rather than funerary rituals' Reveals the mystical nature of Egyptian civilization denied by orthodox Egyptologists' Examines the similarity between the pharaoh's afterlife voyage and shamanic journeying' Shows shamanism to be the foundation of the Egyptian mystical traditionTo the Greek philosophers and other peoples of the ancient world, Egypt was regarded as the home of a profound mystical wisdom. While there are many today who still share that view, the consensus of most Egyptologists is that no evidence exists that Egypt possessed any mystical tradition whatsoever. Jeremy Naydler's radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts--the earliest body of religious literature to have survived from ancient Egypt--places these documents into the ritual context in which they belong.Until now, the Pyramid Texts have been viewed primarily as royal funerary texts that were used in the liturgy of the dead pharaoh or to aid him in his afterlife journey. This emphasis on funerary interpretation has served only to externalize what were actually experiences of the living, not the dead, king. In order to understand the character and significance of the extreme psychological states the pharaoh experienced--states often involving perilous encounters with alternate realities--we need to approach them as spiritual and religious phenomena that reveal the extraordinary possibilities of human consciousness. It is the shamanic spiritual tradition, argues Naydler, that is the undercurrent of the Pyramid Texts and that holds the key to understanding both the true nature of these experiences and the basis of ancient Egyptian mysticism.

Shamanic Mysteries of Egypt: Awakening the Healing Power of the Heart Review

Shamanic Mysteries of Egypt: Awakening the Healing Power of the Heart

"Shamanic Mysteries of Egypt" is a wonderful melding of Linda Star Wolf's channeled wisdom and Nicki Scully's placing this wisdom in a context that can be placed into the reader's life. Through story, meditation, visualization, and ritual,Scully and Star Wolf take us deeply into the world of Egyptian mythology, basing their work of alchemical death and rebirth on twenty-six of the primary Egyptian divine entities, along with the four elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
This is a journey of initiation, and is not to be taken lightly. Through techniques such as breathing the earth and the sky, stepping off of a cliff, and morphing into a Dove, step by step the reader is taken through an alchemical death and rebirth.
The one thing that I would have liked to have seen expanded is the commentary correlating the divine entities with the archetypes of the Tarot. Walk with Thoth and Anubis, and place permanent change in your life.

I have studied Egyptology for 27 years. This is the first and only book that offers a complete how-to guide for the ancient practice of divination and magic. It's not a New Age smo0ke and mirrors book..... the spells and divination information is taken directly from ancient scriptures. The text is footnoted. The author did her research and condensed the information in an easy-to-read how-to guide. I have dozens of more scholarly books and most do not contain the divination information found in this little number. I have referred to this book over and over again. It is easy to read for beginners and offers easy reference for us old-time armchair Egyptologists.
