The Egyptians (Art from the Past) Review

The Egyptians (Art from the Past)

Our class is studying ancient Egypt and this book was so entertaining that we caught on to the concepts a lot easier. It also brought to life the meanings of a lot of the symbols we are learning about. It is well written and the instructions are easy to understand.
ALL of the materials needed were easily found around the house, and that makes it even better, becuase you don't have to go out a buy a lot to be able to do the projects.
I especially enjoyed the section on Cat Mummies along with the Canopic Jars. It goes along great with another book called Cat Mummies.
Even if you don't do the crafts, you will enjoy reading about the different items, as they explain more about the symbols of ancient Egypt. I hope you like this book as much as our class did!

Parallels: Mesoamerican and Ancient Middle Eastern Traditions a Tradition Review

Parallels: Mesoamerican and Ancient Middle Eastern Traditions a Tradition

Diane Wirth has collected an impressive number of cultural parallels between the Old World (Near East) and the New World (Mesoamerica). She presents a large number of examples that show bearded figures in the early cultures of Mesoamerica which have usually been considered as beardless. These examples parallel Near Eastern cultural and physical features. She shows a close parallel between the characteristics of the Egyptian god Osiris and the Maya Maize god. She draws parallels in creation and renewal beliefs as well as in birth and resurrection as revealed in the iconography. She demonstrates how the World Tree (Tree of Life) is common to both Near Eastern and Mesoamerican beliefs. She reveals the similarities between the Egyptian and Mayan scribal traditions. Both hieroglyphic writing systems were highly developed and both used logograms, syllabic signs and determinative markers that aided in determining the meaning of ambigious glyphs. She uses the glyphs and the icons from works of art and sculpture to explain the complexity of these parallels. Diane is very qualified to do this kind of comparison. She has studied these things for many years and has been a student of many of the leading Mesoamerican scholars. I recommend this book to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of the diffusion of culture from the Old World to the New. There are many excellent references cited that can lead one to a more comprehensive understanding of these two cultural areas.

Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation Review

Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation

This is the second book I have read from Dr Thom Cavalli a perfect companion to his first book Alchemical Psychology. Thom is a master of weaving ancient wisdom with modern psychology and personal growth. The books are easy to read, fascinating and with a great touch of living history. More importantly they are a guide on how to move forward in ones life in a clean way using the wisdom that has been "hidden in plain sight" for Milena. I was fortunate enough to get Embodying Osiris just before I left to Egypt and wow! what an enhancement it was to have with me and to really "feel" what I saw. I also want to add this is not some New Age dribble rather a well researched book based shedding light on mysteries that have always been. I also invite those of you reading this to pick up Dr Thom's first book it is equally as fascinating and helpful. Can't wait for the next one.....

The modern Western movement to embrace Eastern spiritual traditions usually stops with India and the Orient. Westerners have yet to discover the wisdom that dates back even further to ancient Egypt. With a Jungian perspective, clinical psychologist Dr. Thom F. Cavalli plumbs that wisdom through the myth of Osiris, the green-skinned Egyptian god of vegetation and the Underworld. As no one else has done, Cavalli draws on Osiris's death and resurrection as a guide to spiritual transformation. The myth represents the joining of the conscious and the unconscious, the light and the dark, life and death, and shows how to live our temporal existence in service to and anticipation of eternal life. Cavalli sees the ancient art of alchemy - which attempted to turn lead into gold - as the key. The alchemical recipe "solve et coagula" (solution and coagulation) encoded in the myth describes the integration of all parts of a person and the method for achieving an experience of immortality in life and eternal life after death. The Osiris myth thus provides a model for the contemporary quest for individuation, the Jungian term for integrating ego and self, body and soul, in the process of becoming whole.

Waters of Life: A Devotional Anthology for Isis and Serapis Review

Waters of Life: A Devotional Anthology for Isis and Serapis
Average Reviews:

This is a book that again is a capstone of its sort. This anthology takes smatterings that the best minds in the Hellenic and Kemetic communities have to offer and doesn't fail to deliver. The essays are crisp and well edited. The poetry is clear and formatted in a manner that is well paced... You want to read line by line because each line takes you deeper and deeper into a time that is not our time.
The short stories do the same, there is one short story in particular of a modern focus with 2 brothers that is clear and "to the point." The book backs up its talk with well cited references, crisp down to earth language and many alchemic references at varying points. To everyone that contributed to this marvel, you did your jobs splendidly. This is the kind of book that you will probably want to buy a 2nd copy for yourself. The reason for this is that you will be marking off a lot of the poems as evocations and the stories will take you back to a time of wonder and myth and harsh yet fascinating dualities. Again fascinating and well done.

Ancient Egypt: Its Culture and History Review

Ancient Egypt: Its Culture and History

This is an informative and comprehensive introduction to Egyptology. Starting with an analysis of the Nile and how this majestic river is pivotal to understanding this ancient culture, White brings us through a descriptive tour of each of the important contributors to Ancient Egyptian culture; the Pharoh, the Priest, the Architect, the Craftsman and the commonly disregarded peasant. This book, albeit occasionally too factual, has a wealth of information included in its mere 200 pages. The three historical chapters are a welcome synthesis to all of the factual data that was presented earlier. The fold-out summary of the major Pharohs, architectural advances and other contemporary cultures is great for keeping all of the important dates, places and people straight. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the wonders of Egypt.

Great Ancient Egypt Projects You Can Build Yourself (Build It Yourself series) Review

Great Ancient Egypt Projects You Can Build Yourself (Build It Yourself series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We checked out every Egyptian craft book from our library for a homeschool unit (grade 5, and this was among the top 3 that we actually used. The projects in this book are not cute crafts like in many of the other books; they can be used to really help understand the history. Our favorite project in this book was the "wesekh collar." The book actually gives a lot of background information about jewelry and beads and shows examples other than the project, so you get a feel for the variety that existed. I love that the book makes an attempt to replicate actual objects while still using readily available materials. While the book suggested plastic beads and copper wire, we used stone beads and that led to a whole discussion about what types of metals, minerals and gems might have been available to the egyptians.
The book also has the best "papyrus paper" instructions for simulating papyrus. It is the only book that I found that used thin strips laid in an overlapping weave, which illustrates the process rather than the end result. (There are many videos on the web that show papyrus being made - pretty cool to watch before starting this project!)
Most of the projects in this book would be best suited to kids 9 and up. Younger kids would most likely need some assistance. My 7 year-old did many of the projects with us and did need help.
For anyone looking for additional resources that are more than toilet paper tube arm cuffs and construction paper collars, I suggest you also try:
Make History: Ancient Egypt : Re-Create Authentic Jewelry, Toys, and Other Crafts from Another Place and Time (Make History)
Spend the Day in Ancient Egypt: Projects and Activities That Bring the Past to Life (Spend The Day Series)
and if cooking is your thing
Cooking in Ancient Civilizations (The Greenwood Press Daily Life Through History Series) is awesome (but pricey), especially if you will also be studying other ancients like the Greeks and Romans. We held a "feast day" at the end of our unit and the kids loved the food! They are now asking for these recipes again!

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses Review

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great book for those who like ancient Egypt and mythical characters. In this case: goddesses and cohorts. The book is loaded with information beyond the usual surface coverage. Scholarly but popular, witty. Nice mix. Goddesses are each profiled in "biographies". Maps, very good illustrations, photographs, etc. Attention to detail makes this book stand out, I'd say. Myths are covered, where the temples were found, how each goddess became important, their highs, their lows. Isis, Hathor, Nut, Wadjet, all the usual suspects. I really liked the survey of cult towns. Very unique. There should've been an index, though. An index would've been helpful because the author covers a lot of ground. But it's more an alphabetical reference guide with lots of fascinating extras, so not a huge quibble. A welcome addition to my library of the ancient world and mythology. Quite recommended.

The Egyptian Mysteries Review

The Egyptian Mysteries

I just finished reading Arthur Versluis' incredible book, The Egyptian Mysteries. After having read dozens of books in doing research for my own work, Embodying Osiris, I can say without reservation that Versluis' insights into ancient Egypt go deeper than any other I've read thus far. It's one of those books where you find yourself highlighting every other sentence. He manages to cover an enormous amount in a very short space (148 pages), reflecting his command of the subject and ability to be succinct. In short chapters he delves into the essence of the major Egyptian gods: Osiris, Typhon (Seth), Hermanubis, Ra; and further explores the inner meaning of the Ennead, the Two Lands and best of all, the Apocatastasis. (Take a look at my FB page for a long quote.) In short, he really gets to the heart of ancient Egypt and you catch a glimpse of that ineffable mystery that was ancient Egypt. If I have one criticism to make it is this: Versluis interprets this mystery through the lens of Buddhism, Vedanta and Taoism. While I understand this need - since the Egyptians left no commentary, no philosophical canon, no teachings - I do not agree with him that "there is no other way." I think there is: it is possible to deconstruct the Egyptian mind, to go back, as best we can using a phenomenological approach, and appreciate their psyche on its own terms. In any event, this is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to understand how such an ancient culture, one that integrated spirituality into everyday life, serves as a model for the pressing needs of a modern world that has virtually lost all touch with the sacred.
