The Wings of Isis lifts the veil of mystery that surrounds the great Egyptian temples to reveal the magic and rituals of the Isian tradition. For over 6000 years the great temples of Egypt stood as the houses of the gods. Each temple was ruled by a different god or goddess. The ceremonies and rituals performed in these temples reflected the attributes of each deity.

Offering to Isis: Knowing the Goddess Through Her Sacred Symbols Review

Offering to Isis: Knowing the Goddess Through Her Sacred Symbols
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
M. Isidora Forrest proved with her publication of Isis Magic in 2001 that modern
Neopaganism and Goddess Spirituality is capable of attaining depth and spiritual
maturity. Now with Offering to Isis, she joins the ranks of those who have
demonstrated that it is also capable of illuminating and deeply moving poetic
beauty in its worship.
Isis Magic provided a detailed history of the historic worship of Isis, and an
extensive set of spiritual and magical practices-- rituals, meditations,
devotions-- designed to develop a deep, rich connection with the Goddess Isis.
Now, in Offering to Isis, the author adds an important resource to the
repertoire of modern devotees of Isis-- a catalogue of nearly 75 symbols sacred
to the Goddess (the Heart, the Knot, the Lotus, Papyrus, etc.), and for each,
she does two things-- first, she explains in lucid and knowledgeable prose why
it is an appropriate offering to the Goddess in relation to its ancient place in
Egyptian life and particularly in Egyptian religion (its use, symbolism, etc.),
and second, she presents a beautiful and poetic offering speech or hymn to
accompany the Isiac's own devotional offering of that item to Isis.
This is not the book to pick up to learn the history and methods of ancient Isis
worship (that has already been presented in Forrest's Isis Magic, and by
DeTraci Regula, R.E. Witt, and other priests, priestesses, and scholars). This
is the book that will deepen your understanding and love of Isis, and will make
you wonder why you haven't already been exploring the beauty of that most
Egyptian of religious rites, the ritual of offering.

She discusses the practice of ancient offering rites and shows how they can be applied today for spiritual growth and sacred magic. Readers can choose from over seventy scripted offerings to Isis. Also included are the sacred hieroglyphs associated with Isis and how these powerful, magical symbols can aid in forging a strong connection with the goddess.

This book could be subtitled: "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know about Isis, But Didn't Know Where to Find it..." There's a LOT of information here, from clothing and divination to mythology and history. The information is presented in an interesting and quite readable manner and there are tons of illustrations. If you have believed that Isis was solely an Egyptian Goddess, Goddess of Love and the Great Mother, this book will set you straight, showing you Isis as Goddess of Healing and Magick, Sun and Moon Goddess, Goddess of the Stars and Earth and much more. She is associated with Gods and Goddesses of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Greek and Asian pantheons. I highly recommend this book for the student, worshipper and researcher of Isis.

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn Review

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn

This delightfully named book is an autobiography of the writer's journey through the Ancient Egyptian myths and symbols. In essence it is a spiritual voyage of discovery which entwines in it discussions of scholarly texts. The end result of the author's experiences is a collection of insights into the human experience and psyche. The book is divided into three parts (The light of heaven; The bodies of light; The light within), has no illustrations, and offers a good 13-page bibliography and excellent footnotes. She discusses the Pyramid Text of Unas, the Legend of Ra and Sekhmet, the opposition of Osiris and Seth, and the Myth of Isis and Orisis, as well as the Ka, Ba and Akh of the Ancient Egyptian, among several subjects. It is recommended for the spiritually open-minded.

Hathor Rising: The Power of the Goddess in Ancient Egypt Review

Hathor Rising: The Power of the Goddess in Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
British Egyptologist Alison Roberts has blended history, religion, myth, and art in this first of projected two volumes. Focusing on Upper Egypt (especially Thebes) and the New Kingdom era, she follows the evolving role of the solar serpent goddess known as Hathor through the reigns of such famous pharaohs as Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, and Tutankhamun. Sprinkling her narrative with poems, hymns, myths, and folktales, Roberts avoids the common mistakes of books for the general reader. She does not treat the religion of Ancient Egypt as monolithic and static, nor does she allow Western biases toward monotheism to turn Akhenaten into a hero. She shows how Egyptian religion was already changing after the rise of Thebes and how a new emphasis on inward personal religious experience was manifested during the reign of Hatshepsut (150 years before Akhenaten). She points out the ironic fact that Akhenaten, personally close to the female members of his family (mother, wife, and daughters), made religious changes which actually decreased the role of female deity. The book is lavishly illustrated with black and white photograps and drawings, all clearly explained and tighly woven into the narrative. I look forward to the projected second volume, in which she intends to focus on Upper Egypt (especially Memphis) and the resurgence of female deity in the post-Akhenaten era.

Women in Ancient Egypt Review

Women in Ancient Egypt

This is a very detailed book that I found invaluable when doing a research task on Women in New Kingdom Egypt. The information is organised into the Old, Middle and New Kingdom periods, and is backed up with numerous pictures and references to tombs.

An idealised version of women appears everywhere in the art of ancient Egypt, but the true nature of these women's lives has long remained hidden. Robins' book, gracefully written and copiously illustrated, cuts through the obscurity of the ages to show us what the archaeological riches of Egypt really say about how these women lived, both in the public eye and within the family.

The art and written records of the time present a fascinating puzzle. But how often has the evidence been interpreted, consciously or otherwise, from a male viewpoint? Robins conducts us through these sources with an archaeologist's relish, stripping away layer after interpretive layer to expose the reality beneath. Here we see the everyday lives of women in the economic, legal, or domestic sphere, from the Early Dynastic Period almost 5,000 years ago to the conquest of Alexander in 332 B.C. Within this kingdom ruled and run by men, women could still wield influence indirectly—and in some cases directly, when a woman took the position of king. The exceptional few who assumed real power appear here in colorful detail, alongside their more traditional counterparts. Robins examines the queens' reputed divinity and takes a frank look at the practice of incest within Egypt's dynasties. She shows us the special role of women in religious rites and offices, and assesses their depiction in Egyptian art as it portrays their position in society.

By drawing women back into the picture we have of ancient Egypt, this book opens a whole new perspective on one of world history's most exotic and familiar cultures.

Daughters of Isis: Women of Ancient Egypt (Penguin History) Review

Daughters of Isis: Women of Ancient Egypt (Penguin History)
Average Reviews:

"Daughters of Isis," is a must from those who want to know the ins and outs of Egyptian civilization, which includes the often over-looked role of women. This book covers the life of women from birth to death and contains a wonderful chapter on female kings, including Maatkare Hatchepsut and Neferuaten Nefertiti along with other, lesser known great women. Changes in styles and beliefs through the history of Ancient Egypt are noted with wonderful detail. The plates are superb and portray a variety of household implements and portrayals the Egyptians, themselves, made of their women. Forming a wonderful compliment to other literature that examines the lives of those below Pharaoh as well as other works by Joyce, "Daughters of Isis" does those same daughters and their goddess quite the justice.

In ancient Egypt women enjoyed a legal, social and sexual independence unrivalled by their Greek or Roman sisters, or in fact by most women until the late nineteenth century. They could own and trade in property, work outside the home, marry foreigners and live alone without the protection of a male guardian. Some of them even rose to rule Egypt as 'female kings'. Joyce Tyldesley's vivid history of how women lived in ancient Egypt weaves a fascinating picture of daily life - marriage and the home, work and play, grooming and religion - viewed from a female perspective, in a work that is engaging, original and constantly surprising.

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses Review

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great book for those who like ancient Egypt and mythical characters. In this case: goddesses and cohorts. The book is loaded with information beyond the usual surface coverage. Scholarly but popular, witty. Nice mix. Goddesses are each profiled in "biographies". Maps, very good illustrations, photographs, etc. Attention to detail makes this book stand out, I'd say. Myths are covered, where the temples were found, how each goddess became important, their highs, their lows. Isis, Hathor, Nut, Wadjet, all the usual suspects. I really liked the survey of cult towns. Very unique. There should've been an index, though. An index would've been helpful because the author covers a lot of ground. But it's more an alphabetical reference guide with lots of fascinating extras, so not a huge quibble. A welcome addition to my library of the ancient world and mythology. Quite recommended.

Isis in the Ancient World Review

Isis in the Ancient World
Average Reviews:

Witt's study of the Isis cult focuses primarily on her fame outside of Egypt, but his research is impeccable and always fascinating in its detail. Isis in Rome. Isis in Santorini. Isis in Gaul. Isis just about everywhere in the Mediterranean world. Witt does an excellent job when gathering information about her festivals, cult objects and practices, and her place in widespread popular piety as a precursor of the Vigin Mary figure. There's also info on the gods of Isis' Egyptian entourage--Osiris, Anubis, Horus, Nephthys--and their respective places in the cult outside Egypt. All in all, a marvelous and ample treatment of one of the ancient world's most influential and enduring religious traditions.
