The Mysteries of Isis: Her Worship & Magick (Llewellyn's World Religion and Magic Series) Review

The Mysteries of Isis: Her Worship and Magick (Llewellyn's World Religion and Magic Series)

This book could be subtitled: "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know about Isis, But Didn't Know Where to Find it..." There's a LOT of information here, from clothing and divination to mythology and history. The information is presented in an interesting and quite readable manner and there are tons of illustrations. If you have believed that Isis was solely an Egyptian Goddess, Goddess of Love and the Great Mother, this book will set you straight, showing you Isis as Goddess of Healing and Magick, Sun and Moon Goddess, Goddess of the Stars and Earth and much more. She is associated with Gods and Goddesses of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Greek and Asian pantheons. I highly recommend this book for the student, worshipper and researcher of Isis.

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn Review

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn

This delightfully named book is an autobiography of the writer's journey through the Ancient Egyptian myths and symbols. In essence it is a spiritual voyage of discovery which entwines in it discussions of scholarly texts. The end result of the author's experiences is a collection of insights into the human experience and psyche. The book is divided into three parts (The light of heaven; The bodies of light; The light within), has no illustrations, and offers a good 13-page bibliography and excellent footnotes. She discusses the Pyramid Text of Unas, the Legend of Ra and Sekhmet, the opposition of Osiris and Seth, and the Myth of Isis and Orisis, as well as the Ka, Ba and Akh of the Ancient Egyptian, among several subjects. It is recommended for the spiritually open-minded.

Waters of Life: A Devotional Anthology for Isis and Serapis Review

Waters of Life: A Devotional Anthology for Isis and Serapis

This is a book that again is a capstone of its sort. This anthology takes smatterings that the best minds in the Hellenic and Kemetic communities have to offer and doesn't fail to deliver. The essays are crisp and well edited. The poetry is clear and formatted in a manner that is well paced... You want to read line by line because each line takes you deeper and deeper into a time that is not our time.
The short stories do the same, there is one short story in particular of a modern focus with 2 brothers that is clear and "to the point." The book backs up its talk with well cited references, crisp down to earth language and many alchemic references at varying points. To everyone that contributed to this marvel, you did your jobs splendidly. This is the kind of book that you will probably want to buy a 2nd copy for yourself. The reason for this is that you will be marking off a lot of the poems as evocations and the stories will take you back to a time of wonder and myth and harsh yet fascinating dualities. Again fascinating and well done.

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses Review

The Intrepid Wanderer's Guide to Ancient Egyptian Goddesses

Great book for those who like ancient Egypt and mythical characters. In this case: goddesses and cohorts. The book is loaded with information beyond the usual surface coverage. Scholarly but popular, witty. Nice mix. Goddesses are each profiled in "biographies". Maps, very good illustrations, photographs, etc. Attention to detail makes this book stand out, I'd say. Myths are covered, where the temples were found, how each goddess became important, their highs, their lows. Isis, Hathor, Nut, Wadjet, all the usual suspects. I really liked the survey of cult towns. Very unique. There should've been an index, though. An index would've been helpful because the author covers a lot of ground. But it's more an alphabetical reference guide with lots of fascinating extras, so not a huge quibble. A welcome addition to my library of the ancient world and mythology. Quite recommended.

I just finished reading Arthur Versluis' incredible book, The Egyptian Mysteries. After having read dozens of books in doing research for my own work, Embodying Osiris, I can say without reservation that Versluis' insights into ancient Egypt go deeper than any other I've read thus far. It's one of those books where you find yourself highlighting every other sentence. He manages to cover an enormous amount in a very short space (148 pages), reflecting his command of the subject and ability to be succinct. In short chapters he delves into the essence of the major Egyptian gods: Osiris, Typhon (Seth), Hermanubis, Ra; and further explores the inner meaning of the Ennead, the Two Lands and best of all, the Apocatastasis. (Take a look at my FB page for a long quote.) In short, he really gets to the heart of ancient Egypt and you catch a glimpse of that ineffable mystery that was ancient Egypt. If I have one criticism to make it is this: Versluis interprets this mystery through the lens of Buddhism, Vedanta and Taoism. While I understand this need - since the Egyptians left no commentary, no philosophical canon, no teachings - I do not agree with him that "there is no other way." I think there is: it is possible to deconstruct the Egyptian mind, to go back, as best we can using a phenomenological approach, and appreciate their psyche on its own terms. In any event, this is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to understand how such an ancient culture, one that integrated spirituality into everyday life, serves as a model for the pressing needs of a modern world that has virtually lost all touch with the sacred. Isis in the Ancient World Review

Isis in the Ancient World

Witt's study of the Isis cult focuses primarily on her fame outside of Egypt, but his research is impeccable and always fascinating in its detail. Isis in Rome. Isis in Santorini. Isis in Gaul. Isis just about everywhere in the Mediterranean world. Witt does an excellent job when gathering information about her festivals, cult objects and practices, and her place in widespread popular piety as a precursor of the Vigin Mary figure. There's also info on the gods of Isis' Egyptian entourage--Osiris, Anubis, Horus, Nephthys--and their respective places in the cult outside Egypt. All in all, a marvelous and ample treatment of one of the ancient world's most influential and enduring religious traditions.

CIRCLE OF ISIS
By Ellen Cannon Reed
The title is decieving becasue the book is not all about Isis and thats the big reason I ordered this book. But I understand why she called it the Circle of Isis for her love of Isis is so strong. I think Egyptian Wicca would have been more appropiate. Now Mrs Reed doe not claim that she is recreating the magick that the ancient Egyptians used, she states that she is adopting the Egyptian pantheon into her Wiccan beliefs. She gives the experience that she had with the Egyptian deities and the experience that her coven had with them as well. You will find magick in this book but not spells like "to get a lover" or to "to heal a burn" the magick you will learn is with the deities. She gives some wonderful information on quite of few of the gods and goddesses major and minor deities. She gives you recipes for oil and incense for diffrent deities. Also she gives out guided meditations on meeting the deities and ritual on how to contact them. She gives out rituals that are suitable for solitary practice and rituals suitable for a group of people. there are wonderful hymns to the gods and goddesses, instructions on making an Egyptian wand, sistrum, kilt, scarab, wax and ushbati figures and more. She also includes Hierogyphics and their translations and other stuff as well. I honestly could not put this book down I was so fascinated with it. This book is indeed interesting. The book is pure devotion you can feel the authers love for the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt.
Im giving it 4 stars

Egyptian Gods and Goddesses: The Mythology and Beliefs of Ancient Egypt Review

Egyptian Gods and Goddesses: The Mythology and Beliefs of Ancient Egypt

I found this book on a remainder table several years ago and have learned much of Egypt(Kemet) from it. There are not many authentic books that deal with this subject in an accurate/mystical approach. Mr Barrett is a learned scholar and archologist from Britain. What could his take on Egypt mean to the explorer of the mystical side? Lots!
To begin, this book is filled with information about most of the gods I could think of and more. Many are all but obscured and forgotten. The very myths behind these wonderful illustations are profound. This complements, but is not required to study and use his great Ancient Egyptian Tarot. I cannot understand why the book is no longer in print. Not all books have to be a best seller. I suppose the publisher had some issues here.
As for myself, there are no critical marks regarding this historically accurate and beautifully illustrated text. I would recommend getting it used, as I can see the value go up over the years.
