The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth Review

The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth
Average Reviews:

I'm a 36 year old male who has (intellectually and spiritually) inhabited just about every "headspace" one can imagine -- from New Age kook to cynical academic. I know bad scholarship when I read it, I know opinion stated as fact, and I know the red flags of junk science, because I've experienced this stuff from both sides of the intellectual divide, both as believer/consumer and critic.
Are there unsubstantiated claims and questionable conclusions in "Cosmic Mother"? Yes. There are also many opinions stated as fact. This problem is endemic in social science writing -- it's called THEORY, and if you object to the way these women researched and wrote this book (competently, for the most part), you'd better not look at your college sociology, psychology, or anthropology texts too closely. "Truth" in the social sciences depends on where you start the clock and who's telling the story.
You do NOT have to be slavishly devoted to the notion of prehistoric matriarchies to gain insight and knowledge from this important book. To me, more than anything else, "Cosmic Mother" is a critical examination and radical deconstruction of patriarchal religion and the devastating effects it has had on humanity and the natural world, as well as a precious and rare source of validation for 'smart" neopagans and earth/mother/goddess worshipers of all stripes.
I originally bought "Cosmic Mother" because I realized that I experience the presence of god/dess almost solely in nature. So-called "holy" books and churches do nothing for me except make me wonder at the stupidity of man -- the night sky is my catherdral. I thought this book would help me understand why this is so, why the ocean, the forests, the mountains, the moon, the seasons heal my soul. I wasn't disappointed.
Final words -- this book is intelligent, lovingly written, insightful, well researched, and remarkable in the interdisciplinary nature of its scholarship. The authors seemlessly integrate every branch of the social sciences (drawing heavily on anthropology), biology, history, comparative religion, cultural criticism, you name it. If you are a smart person -- an academic, a critical thinker, a theory wonk, whatever -- who is also aware of spirit and "worships" nature, the earth, the sun, moon, and stars, this book is essential reading.

This book could be subtitled: "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know about Isis, But Didn't Know Where to Find it..." There's a LOT of information here, from clothing and divination to mythology and history. The information is presented in an interesting and quite readable manner and there are tons of illustrations. If you have believed that Isis was solely an Egyptian Goddess, Goddess of Love and the Great Mother, this book will set you straight, showing you Isis as Goddess of Healing and Magick, Sun and Moon Goddess, Goddess of the Stars and Earth and much more. She is associated with Gods and Goddesses of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Greek and Asian pantheons. I highly recommend this book for the student, worshipper and researcher of Isis.

This delightfully named book is an autobiography of the writer's journey through the Ancient Egyptian myths and symbols. In essence it is a spiritual voyage of discovery which entwines in it discussions of scholarly texts. The end result of the author's experiences is a collection of insights into the human experience and psyche. The book is divided into three parts (The light of heaven; The bodies of light; The light within), has no illustrations, and offers a good 13-page bibliography and excellent footnotes. She discusses the Pyramid Text of Unas, the Legend of Ra and Sekhmet, the opposition of Osiris and Seth, and the Myth of Isis and Orisis, as well as the Ka, Ba and Akh of the Ancient Egyptian, among several subjects. It is recommended for the spiritually open-minded.

This is a good book. There are many beautiful pictures, and the book itself is very easy to understand. There are a few spells and chants, but not so much on rituals. It tells a great story of Isis and her life. Easy to follow. It looks like a thin book, but it has a lot of information in it. I especially love the horoscope section where they mention auspicious days of the year. This book is a fun read and the author writes in a language that makes it very easy to understand. This was my first book on Isis, and it is good for learning about her life. For learning about her rituals and what not, Isis Magic by M. Isidora Forrest is the best choice.

Here, on sumptuously illustrated, colorful pages of traditional art and hieroglyphs, appear the spells, rites, fortune-telling systems, and talismans of the goddess Isis, narrated as if in her own voice. All these techniques are based on authentic sources, and they cover topics close to everyone's heart: health and good fortune; scarab amulets for protection against poisons; incantations to end feuding; and recipes for elixirs of seduction. Even predict the future through the Omen of the Flame, the Egyptian zodiac, and the Cairo Calendar of Auspicious Days. Fact panels and myths provide additional information on the background of each enchantment, and on ancient Egyptian life. A Selection of the One Spirit Book Club.

The Gods of Egypt Review

I have always considered Traunecker's work to be of the highest quality. He has an insight into the mechanics of ancient Egyptian cosmologies, theologies, and mythologies that is both direct and free of unnecessary random (and rambling) thought. His assessments are clinical but always interesting, and his work on the El Qa'la temple site is NOT to be missed by anyone who can get their hands on IFAO's pub. Be that as it may, this short book packs a scholarly punch. All of Traunecker's hard-earned, on-site assessments of the gods of ancient Egypt -- their cults, qualities, relevance, and destinies -- can be found in rather tidy, enlightening fashion. A must-have quick reference for many of its tidbits...though Dr. Traunecker does contradict at least one or two minor points he previously asserted in some of his published work. Bottom line -- Immortals (and Immortalettes) of Ancient Egypt from one of the best pros in the business! Get it.

Karl Luckert's Egyptian Light is a must-read for any student of religion, but especially those interested in Greek, Hebrew, and Egyptian studies. After providing his own well thought out but simple theory of how religion works, and his original definition of the word "religion," Luckert delves into the origins of Christianity in the Ancient Mediteranian world. With great expertise, Luckert examines many features of Christianity and traces their origins back to these three great cultures. The book is convincing but playful and original.

Religion in the Roman Empire (Blackwell Ancient Religions) Review

Religion in the Roman Empire (Blackwell Ancient Religions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This fascinating, well-written book provides a clear, and at times lively, introduction/overview of religion in the Roman Empire from Caesar to Constantine. James Rives walks the reader through the variety of beliefs/worship practices from North Africa to Britain, explores the ways in which local deities and practices travelled through the empire and how Roman deities were thought to interact with them, explains the differences among practice, myth, belief and art, and considers Roman imperial attitudes toward the multiplicity of religions under its rule. He does such a smooth job of organizing that it feels as if the information naturally falls into the categories he provides, and while this certainly isn't pop history it is very clearly written, with no jargon, and with interesting details and accounts of people's interactions with their gods/goddesses/lares/sacred sites. He concludes with an account of early Christianity that is remarkably unbiased--this is not a triumphal narrative of the rise of monotheism by any means--and he leaves the reader to consider what was lost, and what has been misunderstood, about a world where caves, groves and rivers were places where anyone could pause and talk to the sacred without intermediary. He also provides an excellent glossary of assorted deities and a very complete bibliography, as well as annotated bib. notes at the end of each chapter for further reading. I'd recommend this to anyone with an interest in the subject; as said, it's not a pop history, but certainly accessible to the educated lay reader (it reminded me a bit of Reuther's Goddesses and the Divine Feminine in terms of readibility/historically informed assessment of non-monotheist religion, and might appeal to anyone who enjoyed that book).

Ancient Egyptian Magic: Classic Healing and Ritual for the 21st Century

Wasn't what I hoped. As a devotee of Isis, I was disappointed to see that this book barely mentioned the Knot of Isis, which is a shame because the Knot of Isis is such a huge part of Egyptian magic and religion. There seems to be more stories and myths behind the charms and spells in here rather than the actual application. There's also not that much on ritual, which is another big part of Egyptian magic and religion. I think what bothered me most was the reference to crystals for healing, which seems too New Ageish.

As early as 4000 B.C., ancient Egyptians wove magic and religion into whole cloth, wrapping themselves in ritual and symbolism that ranged from simple charms and protective hieroglyphs, to the towering monuments to immortality that are the pyramids of the Nile Valley. The rich religion and mythology of ancient Egypt is vividly documented here, with descriptions of the panoply of deities and their complex hierarchy, along with comprehensive explanations of the sacred oils, crystals and plants used in the many rituals that were an integral part of everyday life. Natural healing, magic, power animals, chants, prayers, and the Pyramids are covered in detail, backed by the author's unparalleled access to rare manuscripts and original images taken from Britain's National Witchcraft Museum.

Egyptian Paganism for Beginners: Bring the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt into Daily Life Review

Egyptian Paganism for Beginners: Bring the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt into Daily Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It should be noted first off that this is not a book of ancient Egyptian paganism as it would have been practiced, but rather a modern interpretation using Egyptian godforms in a modern neo-pagan setting, helpfully divided into two sections.
In part one, Egyptian concepts of God are related with the authors' understanding that 'each of the major neteru can represent the Supreme Being, each showing a slightly different facet of the One who is unknowable and inconceivable in his or her entirety. The neteru retain their individual identities, so the devotee is able to encounter the One in a very personal and intimate way.' (pg 7) Briefly described are a few Egyptian-specific terms such as the ka, sekhem, and the Heavenly Trine, and fortunately the authors honestly note that one 'cannot be sure that the ancient Egyptian words?mean the exact equivalent of terms we use today for such concepts' (pg 11). Also described are the elements involved in creating a shrine, the opening of the mouth ceremony, and further notes on Egyptian magick; as well as general pagan and magickal concepts such as casting a circle, totem and assumption of godforms.
The second part is dedicated to the various Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. Following various descriptions of their histories throughout the dynasties are invocations, replies, calls, meditations and commentary for many of the major Gods and Goddesses. Though they do state that it is '?not intended to be a dictionary of gods and goddesses the neteru are not presented in alphabetical order, but in the order that we believe is going to be the most helpful for explaining the nature of ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and practices, showing an overall view of the religions' further noting that 'only a small selection of the neteru is featured' (pg 8).
There are, however, a few points of contention. For one, the understanding of chakra and kundalini lore was very simplified, and not really relevant to the text at hand, having no sensible place in Egyptian religion. Also, there did seem to be an overabundance of comparisons to Judeo-Christian mythology, perhaps they're trying to provide a reference point for those coming from such a background, but I found it more of a distraction than useful. There's no need to equate the two, as they come from completely different mythological and ritual backgrounds.
While not an expression of ancient Egyptian religion and ritual as it may have been practiced, it does provide a basic introduction to modern Egyptian paganism, not a bad start to one's exploration of this path.

CIRCLE OF ISIS
By Ellen Cannon Reed
The title is decieving becasue the book is not all about Isis and thats the big reason I ordered this book. But I understand why she called it the Circle of Isis for her love of Isis is so strong. I think Egyptian Wicca would have been more appropiate. Now Mrs Reed doe not claim that she is recreating the magick that the ancient Egyptians used, she states that she is adopting the Egyptian pantheon into her Wiccan beliefs. She gives the experience that she had with the Egyptian deities and the experience that her coven had with them as well. You will find magick in this book but not spells like "to get a lover" or to "to heal a burn" the magick you will learn is with the deities. She gives some wonderful information on quite of few of the gods and goddesses major and minor deities. She gives you recipes for oil and incense for diffrent deities. Also she gives out guided meditations on meeting the deities and ritual on how to contact them. She gives out rituals that are suitable for solitary practice and rituals suitable for a group of people. there are wonderful hymns to the gods and goddesses, instructions on making an Egyptian wand, sistrum, kilt, scarab, wax and ushbati figures and more. She also includes Hierogyphics and their translations and other stuff as well. I honestly could not put this book down I was so fascinated with it. This book is indeed interesting. The book is pure devotion you can feel the authers love for the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt.
Im giving it 4 stars

THE
SACRED
MAGIC
OF
ANCIENT
EGYPT
Llewellyn Publications, 2003
BY
ROSEMARY CLARK
A REVIEW
H.H. Rev. Ptahmassu K.M. Nofra-Uaa
Nuhati Temple Fellowship
San Diego, California
www.thelivingnuhati.org
Once in a great while a new volume on the Temple Tradition of Ancient Egypt is released that not only sparks our interest, but demands our attention and holds onto it with tenacity. Rosemary Clark's book The Sacred Magic of Ancient Egypt: The Spiritual Practice Restored (Llewellyn Publications, 2003) is one such work- a work that should be considered mandatory reading for anyone who attempts to find meaning and a path of faith in the Wisdom Traditions of the Ancient Egyptians.
This is a large companion volume to the sizeable The Sacred Tradition in Ancient Egypt: The Esoteric Wisdom Revealed (Llewellyn Publications, 2000), a book that is highly recommended to readers before they attempt to apply what is presented in its sequel. For students of the works of renowned metaphysician-philosopher R.A. Schwaller De Lubicz (not forgetting those of his wife Isha Schwaller De Lubicz), Rosemary Clark's volumes will become indispensable research and study guides for the high science through which the Temples, monuments and theological works of the Ancient Egyptians were composed. Whereas the strictly scholarly works of R.A. Schwaller De Lubicz serve as a tool for mapping out what Egypt's Temples and tombs say to us on an intellectual (and some would say anthropological and / or philosophical) level, Rosemary Clark has given us a far less clinical, and much more practical method for approaching the beauty of the Egyptian Mystery Traditions preserved in the monolithic religious remains of Ancient Egypt.
From its beginnings, Sacred Magic asks us to open up the heart of devotion for the Force that truly made Kemet (Ancient Egypt) the forerunner of human civilizations. A Hymn to Harakhte immediately identifies for readers a book that strives to celebrate the Faith of Ancient Egypt, not merely dissect it through boring scholarship. Rosemary Clark, though bearing a gifted scholarly mind grounded in the "discoveries" of Egyptology, is clearly separated from academic Egyptology in her writings because she is not an outsider to the mystical tradition(s) she is trying to explain. It is apparent in the pages of this volume that Rosemary Clark is on the inside of the Ancient Egyptian Tradition, looking out through the eyes of a devoted scholar and teacher of the Sacred Science she helps us to investigate.
The first two chapters of Sacred Magic, "The Legacy of Ancient Egypt" and "Esoteric Architecture", dissect the crux of the ancient Temple and its environment, together with the ancient world view that gave birth to a highly complex system of cosmic investigation spanning more than 3,000 years of human history. Like the De Lubicz's before her, Rosemary Clark unfolds the Temple of Egypt as an Earthly replica of the Heavens and its solar, stellar and lunar harmonies. The Temple in Ancient Egypt was far from being a "church" or place of adoration for the masses. It was a machine in stone, whose minutest details in relief, writing and statuary functioned as a lens through which the Divine rhythms of Heaven were brought sharply into focus. In sections such as "The Worlds of Creation" and "The Powers of Creation", Mrs. Clark convinces us that such was the case throughout all of Pharaonic history, providing the reader with clear tables and diagrams mapping out the ancient realms of Creation as defined through Egypt's principal theological schools, and in the family systems of the Neteru- the "Gods and Goddesses" recognized by the Ancient Egyptians that truly embodied (and embody) the Cosmic Functions of Creation, the Universe and Nature combined.

What is at once so rewarding in Sacred Magic is its definition of the Neteru as more than just the focus of "cults" and "mythology", as is the rule of thumb in the sterile writings of Egyptology. In her significant contribution to the decipherment of the Ancient Egyptian Faith, Mrs. Clark brings out for us the true relationship of Egypt's Gods to Her people, and expresses to readers the Divine Science that eternally linked Kemet to its multitudes of Divinities. Throughout Sacred Magic, we have the opportunity to investigate the forms, functions and Rites (Khesu) of the Neteru as personal Gods and Goddesses, that is to say, as Saviors and Protectors that have tremendous power to transform devotees both psychologically and spiritually. This is accomplished with abundant responsibility as the author maps out for students and devotees a logical program for study, worship and ritual that includes complete liturgies in both Medu (hieroglyphics) and English.
In "Theurgy" and "Liturgy" this volume attains its chief objectives, which is to reestablish the great Temple Tradition(s) of Kemet in a contemporary environment, utilizing the Ancient Scriptures and ritual structures through programs that can be easily achieved in a group devotional setting today. Without lending herself to the New Age hokiness that most often accompanies the recreation of Ancient Egyptian ritual, the author gives us beautiful and traditional Rites paired with descriptive yet succinct instructions for carrying out the adoration of the Neteru. What becomes unarguably clear in reading these particular sections of Sacred Magic is that the Temple System(s) of Ancient Egypt is not only relevant to today's spiritual / religious practitioners, but essential to those of us who desire union with the Mystery Paths of the Neteru. Such a system as that promoted in Sacred Magic- that is, a system using Sacred Astrology, Theurgy and Liturgy as its basis for contacting and comprehending the Divine- forms the foundation for the reestablishment of the Ancient Temple of the Neteru today in a way that remains true to both individual and group dynamics. Although Mrs. Clark bestows the Temple setting with various ranks of Priests and Priestesses, she makes it painfully clear that there is no hierarchy necessary for the accomplishment of the Ancient Egyptian Temple Tradition in the present time. Each function of the Hem(t) Neter or Patron of the Divine House is regarded as essential to the overall function of the Temple, and each is a personal pathway leading ultimately to higher realization of the Temple goal, which is personal union with the Divine, Neter.
For those with a keen interest in the study of Sacred astronomy and astrology as it was perfected by the Ancient Egyptian Temple Tradition, the author's in depth treatment in "Cosmic Resonance" (Chapter Three) is a significant read. This is no light treatment of the subject of solar, stellar and lunar correlations and relationships, but a vast reservoir of dedicated research that deserves special attention for those who wish to pattern their Temple after the precise observations of the Ancient star-watchers and chroniclers. The solar and lunar calendars observed by the Ancients are fully detailed and brilliantly investigated, offering us important tables for carrying out lunar observances and / or Sacred Rites according to the phases of the moon and the Neteru Who manifest through each phase. Such a treatment can hardly disappoint, especially when the author has gone so far in her investigations as to explain the entire zodiac in its correlations with the various Families or Pantheons of the Neteru. Each sign and month in the zodiac is detailed with careful references to their corresponding Neteru, including scents, metals and other natural compliments. This insightful section leaves us with astrological "profiles" of sorts of the Neteru Whom Mrs. Clark asserts can be matched to each of the zodiacal signs. The result is a treatment of Temple Astrology and Astronomy that provokes greater awareness, and satisfies the student of the Heavens graciously.
"Ceremony" and "Transformation" (Chapters Six and Seven) offer one of the most significant contributions to the Temple Tradition(s) of Ancient Egypt I have read in recent years. This is where the author's narrative skill and meticulous research shine through with precise clarity and sensitivity, offering Temple practitioners today an illumination of the function of Rites to the Neteru and the Heka or "Power", "Magic" They embody as manifestations of Heaven on Earth. Rosemary Clark presents her readers with observations grounded in several Ancient Texts and observances, including the Hebu, the Book of Breathings, the Festival of the Joyous Union, the Invocation of Khons, the Book of Hours, and the Lamentations. Each Sacred Observance is carefully illuminated by Ancient inscriptions and thorough tables of comparative information, making an inexhaustible reference for any Servant of the Neteru, Whose aim is to consecrate a proper Temple to Neter that can function according to the multidimensional goals of several participants. Each prayer is accompanied by the appropriate Medu, with English to clarify, and translated from the original texts with obvious dexterity. In reading these sections of Sacred Magic it is more than obvious that Mrs. Clark is herself a dedicated Master and practitioner of the Ancient Egyptian Temple Tradition, and a devoted scholar of the Neteru who wishes to grant others the transformative experiences that such a great tradition has to offer the world of spiritual aspirants.
Much more could be said about Sacred Magic's contents, however, I sincerely feel that the volume speaks for itself, and beautifully so, from the first page to the last. A review of any length could hardly hope to capture the scope and depth of Rosemary Clark's intensely dedicated scholarship and research, so I will simply conclude by asking my readers to investigate this book, and diligently apply it to the uses for which it was intended. Mrs. Clark has effectively summed up the contents of both her tremendous volumes in a single, simple sentence: "...a sacred tradition must be lived to realize the benefit and vital power it possesses". I couldn't have said it better myself.
