Four people voted on the usefulness of my original review, and none of them found it helpful. I guess that is reason enough to try to rewrite it. Whether a review is pro or con, it ought to explain enough about why the reviewer made the decisions they made to be useful to the people who read the review.
My main problem with this book was the writer's style. The book read like one long catalog of citations, or an overgrown footnote instead of a book. I recognize that the author wanted to place herself within the context of current theories and demonstrate that she knew what that range consisted of. It would have been more useful to me if she had discussed the theories and her opinions of them. I found the lists of historians useless and frustrating. I kept wanting to get to the meat of the issues, but all I found was pages and pages of these lists.
It occurs to me that what I was reading was a PHD thesis and not a book. I suppose there is a place for published theses, but my bookshelf isn't one of them.

When Cats Reigned Like Kings: On the Trail of the Sacred Cats

Back in November, I read an excerpt of this book in Geyer's column and thought: I've got to get this!!
This book is well-written, and hooked me right from the beginning. Geyer's interest in the human-cat relationship takes her and you the reader to Egypt, Burma, Japan, and Thailand, plus her descriptions of the main cat breeds is helpful and informative. There are two sections of pictures, one section showing her own two cats the late great Pasha and her current cat, Nikko, as well as photos from her various travels. The second set shows the breeds of cats discussed in part two and all have a high 'aawwww' factor. Plus there is an appendix chronicling the evolution of the human-cat relationship throughout the world. All in all a great read!

The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth Review

The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a 36 year old male who has (intellectually and spiritually) inhabited just about every "headspace" one can imagine -- from New Age kook to cynical academic. I know bad scholarship when I read it, I know opinion stated as fact, and I know the red flags of junk science, because I've experienced this stuff from both sides of the intellectual divide, both as believer/consumer and critic.
Are there unsubstantiated claims and questionable conclusions in "Cosmic Mother"? Yes. There are also many opinions stated as fact. This problem is endemic in social science writing -- it's called THEORY, and if you object to the way these women researched and wrote this book (competently, for the most part), you'd better not look at your college sociology, psychology, or anthropology texts too closely. "Truth" in the social sciences depends on where you start the clock and who's telling the story.
You do NOT have to be slavishly devoted to the notion of prehistoric matriarchies to gain insight and knowledge from this important book. To me, more than anything else, "Cosmic Mother" is a critical examination and radical deconstruction of patriarchal religion and the devastating effects it has had on humanity and the natural world, as well as a precious and rare source of validation for 'smart" neopagans and earth/mother/goddess worshipers of all stripes.
I originally bought "Cosmic Mother" because I realized that I experience the presence of god/dess almost solely in nature. So-called "holy" books and churches do nothing for me except make me wonder at the stupidity of man -- the night sky is my catherdral. I thought this book would help me understand why this is so, why the ocean, the forests, the mountains, the moon, the seasons heal my soul. I wasn't disappointed.
Final words -- this book is intelligent, lovingly written, insightful, well researched, and remarkable in the interdisciplinary nature of its scholarship. The authors seemlessly integrate every branch of the social sciences (drawing heavily on anthropology), biology, history, comparative religion, cultural criticism, you name it. If you are a smart person -- an academic, a critical thinker, a theory wonk, whatever -- who is also aware of spirit and "worships" nature, the earth, the sun, moon, and stars, this book is essential reading.

The Nine Eyes of Light: Ascension Keys from Egypt Review

The Nine Eyes of Light: Ascension Keys from Egypt
Average Reviews:

This book opens up a whole new, yet ancient realm into the unseen and multi-dimensional world in which we live. In a very clear and grounded way, it completely demystifies Ancient Egyptian and Atlantean spirituality for modern times. The Ancient Egyptians had many far advanced technologies for living in truth, harmony, wholeness and genius and this book revives and brings alive all of that ancient wisdom to be applied in today's ever-changing and demanding times. The truth and wisdom contained in these pages shows us very clearly that we are much more than our physical body alone and how we have 9 different ways to perceive our reality and ultimately ascend into a new set of spheres and dimensions at any given time using all 9 light bodies. The knowledge contained in this book blows apart any notion of a "limited" human being and restores a remembrance of the Original Human being, unlimited, boundless, vast and free.
Padma AOn Prakasha has very clearly transmitted a unique and timely piece of work here, that is the FULL DISCLOSURE on what has been kept silent for aeons of time about the truth of who we are and the many facets we need to integrate and embody at this important and unprecedented time of immense change for humanity. There is so much more waiting to be reunited and reintegrated and this is the "How to" manual for that ascension process.
We are all feeling it, that pull towards ancient wisdom, the ascension symptoms we all seem to be experiencing where life is hurtling at us so fast, forcing us to change our old ways and allow the new frequencies to enter and take us on that journey back to wholeness and unlimited love, creativity and true being.
An amazing book for the amazing times ahead that will birth a new consciousness... If there is one book you buy this year, make it this one! Truly astounding, remarkable and incredible...

Maat, The Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt (African Studies: History, Politics, Economics and Culture) Review

Maat, The Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt (African Studies: History, Politics, Economics and Culture)

I literally have hundreds of books many of which are great but this book honestly needs ten stars. I get quivers when I think about the pain staking scholarship that went into this book. This book travels into domains unventured. It inaugurates a new 4th phase of Egyptology. It left the authority of Egyptology saying we have alot to learn from traditional African cultures, signing the praises of Karenga. Ironically Karenga is like the teacher and Assmann the authority who is made to look like the student as his works are corrected. So many people need this book. Spirituality, Philosophy, History, Culture and revealing knowledge that has been locked away for millenniums. Diffinetly for all those who wish to be conscious.

Magika Hiera: Ancient Greek Magic and Religion Review

Magika Hiera: Ancient Greek Magic and Religion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good introduction to the contemporary study of magic in the classical world. That this book is a collection rather than written by a single author makes it more valuable as it provides a variety of interpritation in an area that is undergoing large scale renovations. Scholarly and a bit dry this book has nothing to do with the usual new age kook authors that make serious research into mystical studies a pain and then some.

This collection challenges the tendency among scholars of ancient Greece to see magical and religious ritual as mutually exclusive and to ignore "magical" practices in Greek religion. The contributors survey specific bodies of archaeological, epigraphical, and papyrological evidence for magical practices in the Greek world, and, in each case, determine whether the traditional dichotomy between magic and religion helps in any way to conceptualize the objective features of the evidence examined. Contributors include Christopher A. Faraone, J.H.M. Strubbe, H.S. Versnel, Roy Kotansky, John Scarborough, Samuel Eitrem, Fritz Graf, John J. Winkler, Hans Dieter Betz, and C.R. Phillips.

Initiation Review

Initiation

I first read Initiation 25 years ago, in all that time, I have never found a book that more clearly explains the history and purpose of human lives. Haich provides detailed information about the underlying spiritual reasons for details of human history and writes a fascinating account of what we are experiencing now, why and what is ahead. In 25 years, I have never found anything to contradict what she wrote so many years ago.
I re-read this book almost every other year, wrote a play from it and consider it the touchstone of my life.

Complete Book of the Dead of Hunefer Review

Complete Book of the Dead of Hunefer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thanks to Richard Parkinson for such an amazing full length miniaturized reproduction of one of the most beautiful so-called Books of the Dead! And for such a tiny price. I recall another accordi0n pullout of The Book of the Dead of Ani, albeit much larger, that was prohibitively priced. Hunefer's papyrus is shrunk to 5' x 4-3/8", about a quarter of the original's size. This is the closest most of us will ever get to seeing the actual papyrus of Hunefer in the British Museum. Seeing it all in one piece is amazing--considering that the papyrus of Ani was chopped into chunks. A few of the scenes are enlarged in addition so that we can appreciate the brush strokes and view the creative process of which colors and lines went on in which order. Amazing to think they accomplished that detail with red brushes!
I'm thinking of getting a second copy to remove the papyrus strip from the binding in order to ornament a wall like a wallpaper strip.

This is an ancient "Egyptian Book of the Dead" papyrus, reproduced in its entire length as a pullout illustration. The whole papyrus published for the first time in its original continuous form. It takes children up close to a real "Egyptian Book of the Dead". Hunefers papyrus includes beautiful and detailed coloured pictures of scenes from the afterlife Ideal for children studying Ancient Egypt at school. It is published to accompany a major British Museum exhibition (4 November 2010 6 March 2011). Hunefer was a Royal Scribe, who lived in Thebes in Egypt around 1280 BC. Like other ancient Egyptians, he hoped that when he died he would be admitted to a wonderful afterlife. But many dangers and obstacles could stop you from moving successfully between the land of the living and the land of the dead. The solution was to take with you a collection of magical spells (popularly known today as a "Book of the Dead"), which would give you special powers to overcome the trials and horrors you might encounter on your journey. The papyrus scroll reproduced as a pull-out in this little book contains Hunefers personal selection of spells and it was buried with him.The spells are written out in vertical lines of hieroglyphs and some are accompanied by beautiful painted scenes, illustrating various important stages that Hunefer must reach, including a final judgement, before enjoying an eternal life. The original papyrus is 39 cm tall and 5.5 m long. It now exists as eight separate sections rather than a continuous scroll. It is published here for the first time in the form that Hunefer knew over three thousand years ago. The pullout image is accompanied by a short introductory text. The Author Richard Parkinson is a curator of Egyptian antiquities at the British Museum.

The Gods of Egypt Review

The Gods of Egypt
Average Reviews:

I have always considered Traunecker's work to be of the highest quality. He has an insight into the mechanics of ancient Egyptian cosmologies, theologies, and mythologies that is both direct and free of unnecessary random (and rambling) thought. His assessments are clinical but always interesting, and his work on the El Qa'la temple site is NOT to be missed by anyone who can get their hands on IFAO's pub. Be that as it may, this short book packs a scholarly punch. All of Traunecker's hard-earned, on-site assessments of the gods of ancient Egypt -- their cults, qualities, relevance, and destinies -- can be found in rather tidy, enlightening fashion. A must-have quick reference for many of its tidbits...though Dr. Traunecker does contradict at least one or two minor points he previously asserted in some of his published work. Bottom line -- Immortals (and Immortalettes) of Ancient Egypt from one of the best pros in the business! Get it.

The Eye of Horus: Oracle of Ancient Egypt Review

The Eye of Horus: Oracle of Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

I got this book and divination tool with hesitation, expecting it to be another one, maybe an interesting one. I have been involved in and learning the traditions of ancient Egypt, and I can assure you that the author is acquainted with the energies and archetypal patterns that are contained in the tablets. I have been using the system for a while and it's providing me insights and clarity on many matters.
I would recommend that the reader become acquainted with the mysteries and the deities of Ancient Egypt in order to better understand the layers of meanings of the tablets, as the author's guidance, after a while, becomes too vague. His focus is positive thinking, but at times it feels like he's avoiding within the picture aspects that, as readers, we may not want to see or encounter, but that are there and are a part of everyone's life. It's up to the reader, in my belief, to determine what tablets hold 'blockages' and other negative components that every divination tool includes.
The system is awesome and pretty complete, if the practitioner takes time to explore its depths and discover deeper layers of meaning.

Based on the Ancient Eqyptian dictum "know yourself" which combines Eqyptian mythology and symbolism with practical guidance and inspiration, this pack presents an oracle for greater personal power, self-knowledge and healing. The pack contains a book and 25 stone tablets in a draw-string bag. Each of the stones is engraved with a hieoglyph and can be cast to answer questions on choices, healing, the future, spiritual lessons, creativity and relationships. The first part of the book introduces the legacy of Ancient Egypt and Osiris, the origin of the stones, their spiritual background, and how to use them. The second part describes the 25 stones, each of which is linked to an Eqyptian god or goddess or symbol, such as Osiris, Horus, Isis, Heket, Pyramids and Sphinx. The book explains their qualities and divinatory meanings. The third part describes the spreads that can be used for divination and personal development.

Egyptian's Sacred Rite: An Ancient Practice in a Modern World

The worst thing ever in print, I have seen better information published by LLewelyn and Dover. What little there was, dreadfully innacurate. References were all fourth hand research, pictures lifted off the web, and entire sections of content plagiarized. Written mostly in the first and second person, typos, and the grammar structure of a sixth grader. Amazon's Self Publishing service could be in some legal trouble.

Eternal Egypt: Ancient Rituals for the Modern World Review

Eternal Egypt: Ancient Rituals for the Modern World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It can be challenging for the modern Kemetic reconstructionist to find a book on rituals. The majority of books on Egyptian Paganism tend to have strong Wiccan and Ceremonial Magic elements. There is certainly nothing wrong with these practices. However, an increasing number of Pagans are finding themselves called to worship the Egyptian Gods as they were worshiped in antiquity. Those of us who feel that calling have been left with few useful guidebooks. I believe that the publication of Eternal Egypt is a major step toward remedying this situation.
Reidy draws from credible scholarly sources for all of the rites contained in this book. There is no ritual utterance that is not cited, so that the reader can look up the reference themselves. His scholarship is of the quality that would be respected by an Egyptologist. However, it is clear that Egyptologists are not Reidy's target audience. His book is not written to merely satisfy anyone's intellectual curiosity about rituals. He provides practical guidance on how to actually go about performing the ritual, including comprehensive lists of materials needed, along with suggestions on how to make or obtain them. He describes simple alterations that he has made to the rituals so that any of us can perform the rituals in our homes. He is also very clear about which alterations he is making, and points the reader in the direction of the original sources so that they can read the original rituals in their entirety.
The book is described as "intermediate", and I do not argue with this description. The rituals are somewhat complex. However, I would encourage beginners who are serious about their path to study the rituals in conjunction with Reidy's commentaries on what they mean and why they are performed. In these commentaries, he explains the Kemetic understanding of the Divine in an authentic and deeply moving manner, consistent with the polytheistic theology of the ancients. He shows how even small things such as lighting a candle can have a deeply mystical significance, as the light becomes the eye of Heru (Horus), nothing less than the light of creation pushing back the forces of darkness (pg 6).
"Eternal Egypt" presents a uniquely Kemetic vision of ritual and magic. The practitioner is not only invited to develop a relationship with the Gods, but also to embrace their own divinity and work alongside the Gods in the protection and continuous renewal of the universe. I believe that those who choose to study and enact the rites contained within will find them truly transformative. Reidy has given a great gift to the Kemetic community by making them so accessible.

Eternal Egypt: Ancient Rituals for theModern World is the first comprehensivecollection of important temple rituals performed throughout Egypt during the time of the pharaohs. The author presents seven key rites from official temple records and ancient esoteric texts for personal or group use.
This guidebook also:
- presents rituals in a form designed to assist initiates in restoring the ancient rites of Egypt;- provides for modern usage, key ritual texts coming solely from authenticated ancient sources;- contains easy to follow commentaries and background information on each ritual, including symbolism and mythology notpreviously available in one book;- gives text with commentary for the "Opening of the Mouth" ceremony;- offers practical information for conducting these rituals in today's world.
Formerly only available to the scholar and professional Egyptologist, these ritual texts reveal the deeply spiritual understanding of humanity's relationship to divinity that characterized the ancient Egyptian sense of the sacred.
This is a practical intermediate level text for those wishing to worship the great deities of ancient Egypt in as authentic a manner as possible, and by so doing tap into the great spiritual heritage that sustained Egyptian culture for over three thousand years.

There are no hieroglyphs, phonetically written Kemetic words anywhere in this text. There is no foreword, editorial commentary, footnotes and citations on translation/ language nuances, etc. It's great if you just want to read the Pert em Hru (Book of the Dead) in English - no muss, no fuss. But from an scholarly standpoint, or for someone who wants to see the original glyphs as they read the translation, this Budge version is useless. I wish the book's description had made that clear to potential buyers.

After reading The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life Book - Volume I, I was able to add more pieces to the great puzzle of life. Drunvalo takes difficult topics and explains them clearly. He gives his audience much to think about. I have seen him speak on two occasions and found him to be kind, clear and very informative. He is not arrogant as one reviewer said. He meets with people all over the world and tells you of the latest discoveries. He has studied physics and the arts which gives a balance you don't often see. The book shows many drawings of sacred geometry, the MerKaBa and pictures of the sacred sites and artifacts along with his explanations. Book II will be out soon and I am looking forward to purchasing it. If you're a serious seeker of the mysteries of life, read his books.

The Twelve Gates: A Spiritual Passage Through the Egyptian Books of the Dead Review

The Twelve Gates: A Spiritual Passage Through the Egyptian Books of the Dead
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is about death and resurrection, both physical and spiritual, and "must" reading for anyone coming to terms with his or her own physical death. It is also compelling reading for those desiring change in life, or death to one's old self and spiritual rebirth. Dr. Rush first takes the reader on a facinating journey through death rituals around the world, then presents an overview of the Egyptian Books of the Netherworld, and details the symbolism he used for his own "death and resurrection" using the painful process of tattooing (see his other work, Spiritual Tattoo). The Twelve Gates comes complete with Gate Cards that allow the reader to accompany Re, the Sun God, through the Twelve Gates of the Underworld to be reborn.I found the dreams Dr. Rush reported at the end of each Gate to be quite facinating. Not only is this a captivating book in terms of content it is one of the most beautiful books I have purchased in some time. The Gate Cards are in color and the numerous plates are in color as well. The last chapter, Becoming Osirian, gives a set of simple directives for living a healthy, helpful, non-hurtful life, cautioning that humanity must come before God, and the road to your own godliness is through self-responsible behavior guided by rational and critical thinking. This is bound to be a classic.
