The Sacred Symbols of Mu Review

It is sad to see derogatory reviews of James Churchward's well researched books. If you can't name the fifth President of the United States or say where Point Roberts is - forget about judging Churchward, a veteran traveller, philologist and student of human culture - virtually without equal today. These days - people study narrow fields. Churchward mapped the connections between these isolated fields or cultures - and traced them back to the lost continent or Motherland of Mu. He presented and deciphered Cara-Maya, the mother tongue of Mu, showing how its roots can be traced in a number of different languages and cultures located within or around 'The Ring of Fire.' He provided details of cultural artifacts - to illustrate his theory. Churchward claimed to have received much help in this regard, from an aged Indian Rishi.
Having lived in various bits of the Pacific rim, including odd visits to pacific islands, I can guarantee that anyone who does more than speculate from an armchair -would find Churchward's ideas backed up by substantial evidence scattered through dozens of pacific rim cultures - be it the Pacific N.W. of America, Japan - or wherever. Age-old symbols, in seemingly disparate and disconnected cultures share similar myth-motifs, tell related tales of a tragic, swallowing of a mother-culture beneath the ocean. Besides the Bible, such a deluge is also mentioned in the Chinese Shih-ching (Book of History).
Thor Heyerdal noted the phenomenon - again, not a man prone to expound on distant cultures - from an armchair. Many of Churchward's ideas challenge current scientific and academic 'orthodoxy' (alleging, for instance, that the earth's large mountain ranges were formed - long after mother earth, herself). Churchward also notes anomolous facts - like archeological artifacts that show the existence of technically advanced cultures - beneath the remains of other, less advanced cultures. In most cases, such anomalies cannot be accounted for by orthodox archeology and strictly linear theories of human cultural development.
It may be disturbing to consider that a sudden geological cataclysm might throw human civilisation and culture backwards - almost wiping the slate, but after the recent tsunami - it doesn't take much imagination to think what would happen - if whole techtonic plates broke up - effectively reducing a whole continent to nothing - save scattered islands and peripheral strips of land mass. Plato, for his own part, related similar events (Atlantis) in the Timaeus. Usually mocked as 'fiction' - the fact remains that Plato was absolutely serious about it.
Churchward was thoroughly serious. Given the fact that he reconstructed the hieratic sacred alphabet of Mu, and spent years deciphering the information yielded by hundreds of artifacts from cultures around the Pacific rim - and related areas, it is absurd to suggest that his theories were without proof and ill-founded.He has given us the evidence. The greater part of it is too compelling to ignore.

Mu, as a lost Pacific Ocean continent, was later popularized by James Churchward (1851-1936) in a series of books, beginning with Lost Continent of Mu, the Motherland of Man (1926), re-edited later as The Lost Continent Mu (1931). Other popular books in the series are The Children of Mu (1931), and The Sacred Symbols of Mu (1933).Churchward claimed that "more than fifty years ago," while he was a soldier in India, he befriended a high-ranking temple priest who showed him a set of ancient "sunburnt" clay tablets, supposedly in a long lost "Naga-Maya language" which only two other people in India could read. Having mastered the language himself, Churchward found out that they originated from "the place where [man] first appeared-Mu." The 1931 edition states that 'all matter of science in this work are based on translations of two sets of ancient tablets:" the clay tables he read in India, and a collection 2,500 stone tablets that had been uncovered by William Niven in Mexico. p. 7Churchward gave a vivid description of Mu as the home of an advanced civilization, the Naacal, which flourished between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago, was dominated by a 'white race," p. 48 and was "superior in many respects to our own"p. 17 At the time of its demise, about 12,000 years ago, Mu had 64,000,000 inhabitants and many large cities, and colonies in the other continents.Churchward claimed that the landmass of Mu was located in the Pacific Ocean, and stretched east-west from the Marianas to Easter Island, and north-south from Hawaii to Mangaia. He claimed that according to the creation myth he read in the Indian tablets, Mu had been lifted above sea level by the expansion of underground volcanic gases. Eventually Mu 'was completely obliterated in almost a single night" p. 44: after a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, "the broken land fell into that great abyss of fire" and was covered by "fifty millions of square miles of water." p. 50Churchward claimed that Mu was the common origin of the great civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Central America, India, Burma and others, including Easter Island, and was in particular the source of ancient megalithic architecture. As evidence for his claims, he pointed to symbols from throughout the world, in which he saw common themes of birds, the relation of the Earth and the sky, and especially the Sun. Churchward claims the king of Mu was Ra and he relates this to the Egyptian god of the sun, Ra, and the Rapanui word for Sun, ra'a, which he incorrectly spells "raa."[8]: p. 48 He claimed to have found symbols of the Sun in 'Egypt, Babylonia, Peru and all ancient lands and countries - it was a universal symbol."[8]: p. 138Churchward attributed all megalithic art in Polynesia to the people of Mu. He claimed that symbols of the sun are found 'depicted on stones of Polynesian ruins," such as the stone hats (pukao) on top of the giant moai statues of Easter Island. Citing W.J. Johnson, Churchward describes the cylindrical hats as 'spheres" that "seem to show red in the distance", and asserts that they 'represent the Sun as Ra." p. 138 He also incorrectly claimed that some of them are made of "red sandstone" [8]: p. 89 which does not occur in the island. The platforms on which the statues rest (ahu) are described by Churchward as being 'platform-like accumulations of cut and dressed stone," which were supposedly left in their current positions 'awaiting shipment to some other part of the continent for the building of temples and palaces.": p. 89 He also cites the pillars 'erected by the Maori of New Zealand" as an example of this lost civilization's handiwork.: p. 158 In Churchward's view, the present-day Polynesians are not descendants of the dominant members of the lost civilization of Mu, responsible for these great works, but survivors of the cataclysm that adopted 'the first cannibalism and savagery" in the world.

Atlantis: Ancient Legacy, Hidden Prophecy Review

Atlantis: Ancient Legacy, Hidden Prophecy

The story is familiar: at the height of its glory, a mighty civilization sinks beneath the waves and vanishes, leaving only tantalizing legends in its wake. But what do we really know about Atlantis? In Atlantis: Ancient Legend, Hidden Prophecy, John Michael Greer provides a fair, fascinating and clearly referenced overview of Atlantis as envisioned by thinkers from ancient Greece to the present day. Covering a wide range of material from the sensible to the silly, Greer maps out this popular legend and provides tantalizing hints of the reality which may lie behind these stories.
Greer notes that Plato took pains to state that his account of Atlantis (the earliest we have) was literal truth, not allegory or metaphor. He also points out that Plato's account describes a civilization which was no more advanced than its neighbors. Plato's Atlanteans drove war chariots rather than flying saucers and used spears and arrows rather than mind control rays and levitation devices.
So where did the Atlantean crystal healers and channeled guides come from? From no less than that (in)famous Russian emigré and polymath Helena Petrova Blavatsky. Her Atlanteans (not to mention the denizens of Lemuria, Mu and other ancient civilizations allegedly destroyed by catastrophe) bore little resemblance to Plato's Mediterranean warriors. From there, a shy photographer named Edgar Cayce gave detailed dream-descriptions of the sunken city and the people who had lived there in past lives--as well as an erroneous prediction that Atlantis would rise again in 1968/69.
While Greer refrains from prophesying about when Atlantis will rise, he does offer us some thought-provoking (if a bit gloomy) reflections about our present culture. Modern geologists have shown a long history of radical climate change. And as oil supplies run dry and our consumerist lifestyles become increasingly untenable, we may find that our tales of forgotten civilizations contain hidden truths--and our myths of eternal progress and the triumph of science may hide horrible falsehoods.
If you have any interest in Atlantis or advanced prehistoric civilizations, Greer has compiled information from Plato to the present day, providing an encyclopedic listing of sources for your own studies of the lands beneath the wave. Atlantis: Ancient Legacy, Hidden Prophecy is sure to become the definitive text on the subject, and is highly recommended.

Diop demonstrates his multidisciplinary genius in this book. His scientific approach leaves no stone unturned, even when dealing with linguistics. He addresses so many topics, from the origins of civilisation to political and social organisation in ancient states. I especially treasure the chapters on Africa's contribution to humanity in sciences and philosophy. A real eye-opener. Mostly French speaking authors are referenced and critiqued though. It's a shame there aren't more African scholars following Diop's lines of research.

Atlantis and Other Lost Worlds: New Evidence of Ancient Secrets

This is a tough review to write....
The problem with Atlantis is, it attracts fringe theorists. There can be a perfectly good piece of evidence on the table, but what's going to come up in discussion is magical floating rocks, psychic powers, and ancient astronaut theory. Any archaeological facts most worthy of realistic discussion are lost in the chaos.
This book is a perfect example of what's interesting and what's wrong in Atlantology.
Frank Joseph presents a dazzling buffet of Atlantis and Mu information, and indeed there are a lot of compelling tidbits in here. (Categorically denying the probable existence of a historical location by that name is silly if indeed histories on three or four different continents reference seafarers from Atzlan, Patulan, Etelenty, etc.)
But Joseph commits the unforgivable sin of stating his deductions as conclusive fact right alongside archaeological evidence, with nary a transitional phrase to separate them. (An early affront: "The Etruscans were themselves nothing more than late Atlanteans who colonized western Italy, so their surviving material culture offers us a glimpse of Atlantis at its cultural height.") While some of these conclusions might well be worthy, it is unacceptable to state them without leading the reader through the process.
Even more irritating is the utter lack of citation. I expected a book alleging to be a serious treatise of Atlantis to be covered in footnotes, identifying where archaeological fact could be referenced, history confirmed, etc. But there are no footnotes, no citations, only two pages of bibliography without a way to select the desired source. The text is peppered with the infuriating use of, "clearly," "obviously," and worst, "self-evident." As a result, this book is utterly useless for citation itself.
Even without footnotes, my grasp of world history is better than the average American's, which is how I was able to nod approvingly and then protest vigorously as I read. Joseph makes convincing arguments for some of his theories, but others are obviously flawed when considered in the light of known history (he cites several Old Testament events as concurrent or even identical with Atlantean history, without taking into account the appropriate historical dates of those events).
But then, dates are a weak point throughout the text. Joseph presents a case that the early date Plato attributed to Atlantis' demise, a sticking point for many researchers, can be explained by Plato's quoting a history which used lunar years (Egypt's account of the disaster) in his society which used solar years (Greece). This is a wonderful start, but Joseph fails to then lead us through the math to arrive at his corrected date of 1198 BC for the literal fall of Atlantis. On some points he fixes precise dates; on others he is unclear or even contradicts himself.
BAD BITS
A typical leap of logic: Sodom and Gomorrah are situated, according to Biblical and classical sources, on the Plain of Jordan and were destroyed some time prior to 1500 BC. (Dates are very inexact.)
My info: The two Hebrew terms describing the Plain of Jordan are "kikkar" (round, usually for coin or bread loaf; circular district) and "kullahh mashgeh" (completely irrigated, well-watered).
Joseph: "... the original name of Sodom was Si-da-Mu, while Gomorrah -- I-ma-ar -- is based on the root 'gh m r', which means to 'be deep, or 'copious (water).' These indications suggest that the lost cities of Sodom and Gomorrah ... may be biblical allegories, respectively, for the vanished Pacific and Atlantic civilizations of Mu and Atlantis."
Joseph not only conveniently ignores the many classical sources that specifically locate the cities in question, but also that the "copious water" nomenclature might be attributed to the thorough irrigation mentioned in both the place names and the Biblical account -- the entire reason Lot chose to live there was its verdant plain!
(Whether "I-ma-ar" refers to Gomorrah or Emar is still debated. It's apparent that Joseph didn't look too far into the linguistic background of Sodom and Gomorrah, though, or he would have seized upon the "round" attribute to support his Atlantis theory, as he relates nearly every classical or neolithic circular monument to Atlantis' obsession with concentric rings.)
To be fair, this example is taken from a final chapter overviewing other "lost civilizations" and probably doesn't represent the best of Joseph's efforts, but it does illustrate the critical reading required here.
GOOD BITS
There are some really thought-provoking pieces of archaeological information in the text. Without citations, however, I am reluctant to repeat them, and I haven't the time to independently look up each of them. The first unattributed fact I entered into Google -- the alleged 1960 discovery of hundreds of ancient elephant bones a few hundred kilometers off Portugal, right where Plato reported Atlantis and its elephantine fauna -- produced many other references to this discovery (some substituting mammoth or mastodon) but no original report.
This kind of scholarship isn't scholarship, and it just makes interested folk look bad. I blame not only Joseph but the whole online community. As a person who works in a relatively recent and constantly-updating scientific field, I say: C'mon, guys, show a little respect for your topic and your readers!
EDITING
I was still in the first chapter when I commented to my husband, "I wish this guy were a better writer." I referred primarily to the lack of citation and additionally to some basic editing errors.
Here's one of the worst offenders, from a chapter on Atlantean/Mu influence on South American culture:
"The capital, Chan-Chan, lies just north of Trujillo, and was founded, according to Chimu historians, by Taycana-mu. [skip one sentence] Tayacana-mu founded the city of Chan-Chan. The so-called 'Palace of the Governor' at Chan-Chan -- the city founded by Tayacana-mu -- features a wall...." (p. 145)
Why, yes, we GET that Chan-Chan was founded by Tayacana-mu. Or Taycana-mu; the spelling variation above is original.
CONCLUSION
This is a great read for tantalizing views of Atlantis and Mu, and it's very titillating. It cannot be taken seriously until proper citations are added; I refuse to do the author's research for him.

Lost Cities of Atlantis, Ancient Europe & the Mediterranean (Lost Cities Series) Review

Lost Cities of Atlantis, Ancient Europe and the Mediterranean (Lost Cities Series)
Average Reviews:

This book actually covers more than the mediterranean area. It talks about prehistoric ruins throughout Europe and parts of the mid east. Many sites are familiar, but many more are ones the reader may not have heard of; the author has apparently visited them all. He writes with an easy readable style and includes the history, the legends and other pertinent information. Anyone going to Europe who wants to visit ancient sites should have this book, since it will tell you about ruins you may not know about. The author discusses the various theories about Atlantis with impartiality and ultimately gives his own views. But this book is much more than a treatise on Atlantis and the reader will find much food for thought. Childress also includes in the back of the book an extensive bibliography for further reading. All in all, a highly readable and well researched book.

Atlantis! The legendary lost continent comes under the close scrutiny of archaeologist David Hatcher Childress. From Ireland to Turkey, Morocco to Eastern Europe, or remote islands of the Mediterranean and Atlantic, Childress takes the reader on an astonishing quest for mankind's past. Ancient technology, cataclysms, megalithic construction, lost civilisations, and devastating wars of the past are all explored in this amazing book. Childress challenges the sceptics and proves that great civilisations not only existed in the past but that the modern world and its problems are reflections of the ancient world of Atlantis.

Atlantis Encyclopedia Review

Atlantis Encyclopedia

"Of the estimated 2,500 books and magazine articles published about the lost civilization, The Atlantis Encyclopedia is the only one of its kind. It is an attempt to bring together all the known details of this immense, continually fascinating subject, as well as provide succinct definitions and clear explanations." - From the Atlantis Encyclopedia
Most books about the lost continent of Atlantis are largely theoretical. However, The Atlantis Encyclopedia is more fact oriented, focusing on areas such as geology, oceanography, and astronomy, as well as the numerous folk traditions around the world which preserve memories of a great flood. The exhaustive information presented in this book is the result of more than two decades of continuous study and international travel by the author. From Morocco's underground shrine to Britain's Stonehenge, seldom seen solar monuments in Japan's remote forests to a cannibal temple in Polynesia, Frank Joseph takes novice readers, specialists, and skeptics alike on an intensive journey through Atlantean civilization.
The Atlantis Encyclopedia-written in an alphabetic, encyclopedic format-also offers comprehensive information about the Pacific counterpart to Atlantis: the lost kingdom of Mu, also known as Lemuria. A few of the topics covered in this book:
*Viracocha, the early Inca culture-hero who "rose" from the depths of Lake Titicaca
*Balor, the king of the giant Sea People in Irish folklore
*Island of Jewels, the paradisiacal realm in Hindu myth. At the center of this island hidden by misty akasha, was a magnificent palace where all wishes were granted.
*Enki, the sea-god of Sumerian myth who was a pre-flood culture-bearer from Atlantis
*Numinor, J.R.R. Tolkien's version of Atlantis in Lord of the Rings. Tolkien claimed to have been plagued since childhood by nightmares he believed were past-life memories of the Atlantean catastrophe-nightmares also shared by his son. (Numinor was also known as Ele'na and Westernesse).
*Ragnarok, the Norse "Twilight of the Gods"
*Pleiades, also known as Atlantides, means "Daughter of Atlas". Greek scholar Diodoras Siculus wrote that the Pleiades were not originally mythic figures, but real women who married Atlantean culture bearers. Long after their deaths, they were regarded as divine, and commemorated as a star cluster.
*Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote about Atlantis in a 1928 serialization by The Saturday Evening Post called The Maracot Deep.
At 312-pages, this reference book also features 16 full-color photographs and images, as well as black-and-white photos interspersed throughout the text. Questions addressed in this book include:
*What was Atlantis?
*Where was it located?
*How long ago did it flourish?
*How was it destroyed?
*What became of its survivors?
*Have any remains of Atlantis ever been found?
*Will Atlantis ever be found?
*Did Atlantis have any impact on America?
The Atlantis Encyclopedia is a unique and valuable resource that doesn't aim to prove that the sunken capital actually existed. Yet, with all the evidence mustered on its behalf, even skeptics may conclude that there is SOMETHING factual behind this enduring, global legend.

A handbook of Atlantean information for general readers and specialists alike! This is an invaluable, one-of-a-kind reference. Unlike most other books on the subject, The Atlantis Encyclopedia offers fewer theories and more facts. Although it does not set out to prove the sunken capital actually existed, The Atlantis Encyclopedia musters so much evidence on its behalf, even skeptics may conclude that there must be at least something factual behind such an enduring, indeed global legend. You'll learn:* What was Atlantis?* Where was it located?* How long ago did it flourish?* How was it destroyed?* What became of its survivors?* Have any remains of Atlantis ever been found?* Will Atlantis ever be found?* Did Atlantis have any impact on America?

How can I be the first one to review this book!? This is one of the best books on Atlantis ever written! You have Colin Wilson, master writer of over 50 books, and Rand Flem-Ath, genius of "When The Sky Fell", both working together to write this piece, and no one reviews it? Holy crap!
Just know this. If you can read this book and still look me in the face and tell me Atlantis wasn't real, I will 100% believe that the Earth has no future.

In 1982, the American scholar Charles Hapgood made an astonishing claim to a young librarian, Rand Flem-Ath - that civilization was almost 100,000 years old and he had the evidence to prove it. Before he could substantiate this remarkable assertion, Hapgood died. Together with fellow author Colin Wilson, Flem-Ath set out to track down the truth behind the scholar's statements. Their study of the world's most sacred sites - Stonehenge, the Great Pyramids and many others - led them to an amazing discovery. Far from being built by local people for local reasons, these monuments formed an undeniable geometrical pattern. This is turn implied the existence of an ancient advanced civilization, one that existed before the Flood that destroyed Atlantis and whose knowledge of the world was far wider than had previously been thought possible. This book deciphers this remarkable code and the reasons behind it: the attempt by scientists from Atlantis to preserve a legacy of their civilisation. The book presents its argument with enormous persuasiveness - namely that our civilization is not the first to occupy the planet, nor is it likely to be the last.

After reading The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life Book - Volume I, I was able to add more pieces to the great puzzle of life. Drunvalo takes difficult topics and explains them clearly. He gives his audience much to think about. I have seen him speak on two occasions and found him to be kind, clear and very informative. He is not arrogant as one reviewer said. He meets with people all over the world and tells you of the latest discoveries. He has studied physics and the arts which gives a balance you don't often see. The book shows many drawings of sacred geometry, the MerKaBa and pictures of the sacred sites and artifacts along with his explanations. Book II will be out soon and I am looking forward to purchasing it. If you're a serious seeker of the mysteries of life, read his books.

Fascinating insight on Atlantis and Lemuria. The book does not set out to prove or disprove the existence of these lost civilizations. Instead the author presents many of the stories, legends, and evidence from around the world from Plato, the American Indians, and even modern day accounts. The book is a great read for anyone interested in the Lost Civilizations. We must not forget that Troy was once thought to be just a legend.
