Race and the Writing of History: Riddling the Sphinx (Race and American Culture) Review

Maghan Keita has written an extremely informative and concise introduction to the collapse of Eurocentrism and the resulting exposure of the raw anti-African racism that lurks beneath tons and tons of scholarly jargon. For too long African history has been the exclusive preserve of white writers and white scholars(drenched in Eurocentrism) of African history. Of course white scholars have always had their "negro" colleagues who supported the Eurocentric worldview and the Eurocentric intellectual paradigms. Mr. Keita explores and summarizes their views(Snowden, Early, Gates,Mudimbe,Appiah, etc).
Scholars who refuse to accept the "authority" of Western Academic dogmas are ,at last, given a fair hearing. What exactly is Asante saying? What is Obenga saying? What are Diop's main ideas presented without distortions?
Mr. Keita cuts through the rhetoric and arrives somewhere near the core of the problems encountered in trying to understand and write about the most ancient human past- the ancient African past!
Western scholars have deliberately muddied the waters with the historical dogmas of Hegel, Junker,Erman and with: A group, B group, C group, hamitic theories, dynastic race theories, Mediterranean race,"true negro theories, red race, jumbled linguistic theories: Afro-Asiatic, mixed language family myths, biblical mythology, personal opinions, etc,etc.... The racism of white scholars are said not to have effected their scholarship. Even Junker, Breasted, Hegel, Kant,Reisner,Petrie,Lefkowitz, Erman, Maspero, Wilkinson, Ian Shaw-just to name a few!!! Mr. Keita handles this with great skill.
After creating untold confusion among lay people and even specialist with: Karat Group, Developed Abkan, terminal Abkan , Early A group, Classic A, Terminal A, Naqada,l,ll,lll,Kerma, phase ll/a Classic C-Group,Dynastic race theories,"true negro" theories,"hamitic negro theories",migration theories and the like, Eurocentric scholars have not been able to obscure or escape the Black African reality of "ancient Egypt" by seeking refuge in Jan Assmann-like abstractions. Even Reisner had to recognize the black African reality of the "ancient Egyptian" people and civilizations(Egypto-Nubian cultural complexes, both Nilotic and non Nilotic Black African cultures).
Quoting Dubois, Keita writes that Reisner "conceded that Egyptian civilization was from the south" and "from the black tribes of Punt". And that "Egypt and Lower Nubia" were "culturally and racially one land"(p.79). Of course Reisner asserted that a mysterious race of whites appeared(from where is not clear) passed on their advanced culture to the black Africans then vanished. Reisner fails to answer why this mysterious white race did not build a civilization before arriving near the heart of Africa along the banks of the Nile. Here we can detect the similarities between standard Eurocentrism and its extreme manifestation best demonstrated by the Nazi historical efforts. The differences are more of degree and emphasis. The premise is the same.
Keita documents his effort very well. The index is great. The range of Keita's view is comprehensive.
If one wants to understand what African scholars are saying about the history of Africa Keita's book is a great starting place.
Well worth the money. Packed with solid scholarly information!

Despite increased interest in recent years in the role of race in Western culture, scholars have neglected much of the body of work produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by black intellectuals. For example, while DuBois' thoughts about Africa may be familiar to contemporary academics, those of his important precursors and contemporaries are not widely known. Similarly, although contemporary figures such as Martin Bernal, Molefi Assante, and other "Afrocentrists" are the subject of heated debate, such debates are rarely illuminated by an awareness of the traditions that preceded them. Race and The Writing of History redresses this imbalance, using Bernal's Black Athena and its critics as an introduction to the historical inquiries of African-American intellectuals and many of their African counterparts. Keita examines the controversial legacy of writing history in America and offers a new perspective on the challenge of building new historiographies and epistemologies. As a result, this book sheds new light on how ideas about race and racism have shaped the stories we tell about ourselves.

The Kybalion (Tarcher Cornerstone Editions) Review

The Kybalion (Tarcher Cornerstone Editions)

As a teacher of the mysteries I always offer a list of suggested reading for the seekers attending the workshops. The Kybalion is always near if not actually the top of the list but I've never had an ISBN for the book since my copy is a 1908 original. In preparing my workshop on Transmutation and Change I decided to search for one of the more current editions of the book to have a standard book number. However finding the listing on Amazon is not as much a difficulty as finding a newer edition that follows the original publication.
The portions I read in this Tarcher/Penquin Ed edition follow word for word the writings I have in hand. It will be the edition that will be noting on my list of suggested reading.
As Lori in Florida wrote in her review; this is not an easy book to read. I cannot recall the number of times I have read and mediated on individual chapters, finally teaching the material at free workshops in an effort to assimilate the information. Yet, the effort is worth the time. The giant picture which is Truth, devoid of egotistical labels such as religion, politics or science has been fractured and scattered all over the planet. Each of the above mentioned disciplines holds one or more pieces of the puzzle and often believes that their small portion alone, is the key to viewing the entire picture. The Kybalion (1908) connects the pieces and allows one to see the greater picture.

Who wrote this mysterious guide to the principles of esoteric psychology and worldly success? History has kept readers guessing . . . and now, for the first time, seekers everywhere can discover a widely available edition of a guidebook that has been an underground classic for generations. Here are the teachings of the legendary sage Hermes Trismegistus, reinterpreted for the modern reader. Rumored to be an ancient Egyptian man-god who fathered astrology, alchemy, and other magical arts, the figure of Hermes has fascinated readers of occult literature for generations. Writers in late antiquity named Hermes Trismegistus as the author of their own esoteric teachings, building the mystery of his lineage. Since 1908, The Kybalion—written at the hand of the unnamed "Three Initiates"—has itself generated debate and controversy. Who is behind it? Do its ideas really arise from the secrets of a distant era? And, most important, do they work for the modern seeker? In this concise, engaging guide, the pseudonymous author breaks down Hermetic doctrine into seven compelling principles, and then provides practical methods for how to apply them for self-development in daily life. Here is the definitive edition of a classic of esoteric psychology, now available to readers everywhere.

I literally have hundreds of books many of which are great but this book honestly needs ten stars. I get quivers when I think about the pain staking scholarship that went into this book. This book travels into domains unventured. It inaugurates a new 4th phase of Egyptology. It left the authority of Egyptology saying we have alot to learn from traditional African cultures, signing the praises of Karenga. Ironically Karenga is like the teacher and Assmann the authority who is made to look like the student as his works are corrected. So many people need this book. Spirituality, Philosophy, History, Culture and revealing knowledge that has been locked away for millenniums. Diffinetly for all those who wish to be conscious.

Symbolic Blackness and Ethnic Difference in Early Christian Literature: BLACKENED BY THEIR SINS: Early Christian Ethno-Political Rhetorics about Egyptians, Ethiopians, Blacks and Blackness

Simply put, anyone who may be seeking an alternative critical understanding of early Christian literature apart from the Eurocentric story line is encouraged to read this work by Dr. Byron. Her work is a welcome departure for those who haven't (and perhaps moreso for those who have) been lulled by the false belief that Christianity is wholly the product of white western society. Dr. Byron re-orients our misconceptions about ancient Biblical resources and clearly makes her case using ancient Ethiopic manuscripts that there are indeed many origins of Christianity and many centers of early Christian influence other than Roman. This is a great resource for serious Biblical scholars who wish to have a more profound understanding of indigenous responses to colonialism and World Christianity today.

How were early Christians influenced by contemporary assumptions about ethnic and colour differences? Why were early Christian writers so attracted to the subject of Blacks, Egyptians, and Ethiopians?Looking at the neglected issue of race brings valuable new perspectives to the study of the ancient world; now Gay Byron's exciting work is the first to survey and theorise Blacks, Egyptians and Ethiopians in Christian antiquity.By combining innovative theory and methodology with a detailed survey of early Christian writings, Byron shows how perceptions about ethnic and color differences influenced the discursive strategies of ancient Christian authors. She demonstrates convincingly that, in spite of the contention that Christianity was to extend to all peoples, certain groups of Christians were marginalized and rendered invisible and silent.Original and pioneering, this book will inspire discussion at every level, encouraging a broader and more sophisticated understanding of early Christianity for scholars and students alike.

if you've ever thought/intuited, "it's all connected...why are we fussing and fighting over our expressions of god/divinity??", then this book is for you.
i have never seen kemetic teachings broken down in such a comprehensive, effective way--not to mention rightfully connected to its west african "children" such as orisa (ifa) and vodun--in one place.
newcomers to spirituality/metaphysics will appreciate the practical, plain-language approach and tie-ins to other systems they may be studying. more experienced readers will find the information of 10 volumes complied into one, without the bother of cumbersome translations and unecessarily esoteric language.
also refreshing is the author's clear intent to enlighten, uplift, and educate, not confuse the reader into slavish devotion to his (or any other) "doctrine". at the same time, he emphasizes the need for reputable spiritual education and leadership in the life of the devotee--a delicate balance.
one note: if you have not had direct experience with a traditional african spiritual system, it may be difficult to understand some of the author's experiences.
can't wait for the next volume. thank you for this gift.
peace

Heresy In The University: The Black Athena Controversy and the Responsibilities of American Intellectuals Review

Heresy In The University: The Black Athena Controversy and the Responsibilities of American Intellectuals
Average Reviews:

Berlinerblau wades into the Black Athena controversy and calls a lot of people to task. He summarizes the weighty work of Martin Bernal (who he apparently interviewed and commented on various parts of the book) and critiques both Black Athena and its critics. In short, Berlinerblau concludes: Martin Bernal proves that a lot of antiquity studies have had some serious biases, and his work has forced a lot of reassessment on the part of antquity scholars, but; the antiquity scholars prove that Bernal has made a lot of errors. Berlinerblau also calls some of Bernal's critics to task for the vehemence of their attack on Bernal, punishing him on facts while dismissing some larger points. As far as some of the big arguments (was Athena black, were Egyptians 'black', etc.) Berlinerblau explains the sources, arguments, problems (like projecting 19th century concepts of race back 3000 years) and concludes that the most extreme viewpoints (on either side of the argument) are probably not true, though many of Bernal's points quite possibly are, and that, barring some spectacular discoveries, we will probably never know for certain. Berlinerblau praises Bernal for engaging the public in his work, and feels that scholars should work more to became public intellectuals. One can tell that the author cares and wants to be understood, admitting his weaknesses and trying to be fair to all viewpoints.

One of the most controversial books to come out of the academy in the last fifteen years is Martin Bernal's Black Athena. It has been a true cause celebre. Afrocentrists have both praised the book and claimed that Bernal stole from the work of black scholars to create his study of the Afroasiastic roots of classical civilization. Classicists feel passionately about what they perceive as an attack from an outsider on the origins not only of ancient Greece but of their own discipline. It seems that everyone has something to say about the book; the question is how many really understand it.In Heresy in the University, Jacques Berlinerblau provides an exegesis of the contents of Black Athena, making it accessible to a wider audience. As he clarifies and restates Bernal's opus, Berlinerblau identifies Bernal's flaws in reasoning and gaps in evidence. He cuts to the heart of Bernal's prose, singling out the key points of Bernal's argument, explaining and arranging them in a cogent manner. Berlinerblau addresses the critics' really important objections, including his own, and links each of them to the appropriate substantive argument in Black Athena. He goes beyond simple summary and exposition to present the underlying --stated and unstated--agendas of Bernal and his critics. Ultimately, he exposes both sides and asks what the flawed reasoning from all concerned reveals about the stakes in this key academic dispute and what that, in turn, says about the modern academy.Jacques Berlinerblau is an assistant professor and director of Judaic studies at Hofstra University.

Essays in Ancient Egyptian Studies Review

Jacob Hudson Carruthers (1930-2004) was a professor at Northeastern Illinois University.
He writes in the Introduction to this 1984 book, "The decision to focus on Ancient Egypt was made after a long period of study and debate ... the reasons were that Ancient Egypt offered the best presently known source of data about the uncorrupted African past with enough data to not only verify the facts of African civilization but to begin the construction of a framework to reinterpret the hsitory and social reality of the world."
Here are some quotations from the book:
"The African worldview is essential to a proper explanation of world history. Otherwise, we are merely engaging in the old Negro history game of adding the Negro contribution to white history." (Pg. 14)
"We must, thus, abandon the alien identifications of our mecca and replace them with with concepts by which (Kemet) identified themselves and their land. By so doing, we can affirm our own identity as well as show respect for our ancestors." (Pg. 28)
"In sum, few if any Black scholars have been able to disentangle the data from the dictates of nomadic historiography and this has resulted in obstacles to full development of an African historiography." (Pg. 35-36)
"Of what relevance for us today is this ancient African worldview of the Creation? ... this is still the basic orientation of most African people, even many of us who have been trained to 'know better.' Thus, if we are to know our people we must know our mentality." (Pg. 73)

Serpent in the Sky: The High Wisdom of Ancient Egypt Review

Serpent in the Sky: The High Wisdom of Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

John Anthony West has done the world an enormous service with this bold, brilliance, beautifully written and thoroughly engaging book. He extends the work of Alsation philospher and mathematician, R.A, Schwaller de Lubicz, making it not only comprehensible to the lay reader, but the only plausible explanation for the grandeur and magnificance of ancient Egyptian culture. West is anything but a New Age flake, and he takes some fairly tough-minded positions on the absurdities of modern scholarship. Yet he has the advantage over most orthodox Egyptologists in that he can (a) write -- and write superbly -- and (b) he has a sense of humor, which makes even his most vitriolic attacks on those who persist in ascribing the monuments of Egypt to a race of egomaniacal barbarians the work of a rational giant in a world of Lilliputians. His grasp of the entire sweep of Egyptian history is extraordinary, and his ability to render even the most complex accounts of Pythagorean geometry or symbolism in the hieroglyphs is something every would be academic should take notes on. Besides all this, the book is magnificently illustrated on every page. Without any question, this is one of the best books I have ever read
