A wonderfully thorough examination of Nubian culture and history. It takes also the advantage of have no clear competing title on the market. This fair, archaeological account of the Nubian people is readable and offers some (but not too much) comparison to the Egyptian and Greek states that rose up around it.

Until recently little was known about ancient Nubia and day-to-day lives of the Nubian people aside from knowing it was a civilization contemporary with, distinct from, and living under the shadow of Ancient Egypt. Nubia existed from about 3500-300 BCE, close to 3,000 years. Thanks to recent massive archeological surveys, we now have a much clearer picture of Nubian civilization, what they ate, how they dressed, how they cared for their dead, their military triumphs and defeats, where their cities were built, and what they looked like. Of course they underwent dramatic changes over time, and these are noted where appropriate. Though often confused with the Ethiopians of Greek lore, little doubt remains that Nubians were in fact black African peoples, and their civilization has been claimed by many as proof of a sophisticated and ancient black African society.

For ease of use by students, the work is organized chronologically. Each chapter is divided into convenient subheads that detail military and warfare, government, language, relations with neighboring civilizations; work and the economy, engineering and architecture, housing, transportation, family life, life cycle events, women's roles, art, music and dance, literature, science, and religion. It includes a historical timeline of Nubian history, a glossary of Nubian terms, and a bibliography for further reading. Throughout the work, Bianchi, an expert on the Nubians, shows how the modern world has little by little come to discover and recognize the distinctiveness and importance of Nubia in ancient history. This work will replace all earlier resources on Nubian life and will provide school and public librarians with the most up-to-date and historically correct information on the Nubians.

The God Genes Decoded Volume I (Secrets of the universe revealed in the anatomy and evolution of consciousness in ancient Egyptian cosmology, Volume I) Review

The God Genes Decoded Volume I (Secrets of the universe revealed in the anatomy and evolution of consciousness in ancient Egyptian cosmology, Volume I)

if you've ever thought/intuited, "it's all connected...why are we fussing and fighting over our expressions of god/divinity??", then this book is for you.
i have never seen kemetic teachings broken down in such a comprehensive, effective way--not to mention rightfully connected to its west african "children" such as orisa (ifa) and vodun--in one place.
newcomers to spirituality/metaphysics will appreciate the practical, plain-language approach and tie-ins to other systems they may be studying. more experienced readers will find the information of 10 volumes complied into one, without the bother of cumbersome translations and unecessarily esoteric language.
also refreshing is the author's clear intent to enlighten, uplift, and educate, not confuse the reader into slavish devotion to his (or any other) "doctrine". at the same time, he emphasizes the need for reputable spiritual education and leadership in the life of the devotee--a delicate balance.
one note: if you have not had direct experience with a traditional african spiritual system, it may be difficult to understand some of the author's experiences.
can't wait for the next volume. thank you for this gift.
peace

Stolen Legacy Review

Stolen Legacy

Hotep,I first read this book when I was 11 or 12 and I really liked it then. Unfortunately, this book is hideously flawed with regard to accuracy. As I grew older and increased my personal knowledge of Kemet/Egypt the inadequacy of this work became ridiculously obvious. James' representations of Kemetic thought are completely erroneous. That being said, I do not side with James' other critics on this page. I appreciate what he attempted to do for African people and I understand the brutality of the environment in which he operated. I honor him as an Ancestor. At the same time I am not pleased when I see people (particularly Black people) using this inaccurate work in their attempts to combat the well armed and well entrenched Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists. Neo-Eurocentrists and Eurocentrists find this book incredibly useful to their cause. Stolen Legacy is used to dismiss a diverse Afrocentric movement as a bunch of dreamers, demagouges, and ill prepared romantics. Another note: I found it very amusing how certain contributors to this page confidently stated or implied that "the Egyptians are not Black" or that "Egypt had no connection to Sub-Saharan Africa." (smile) Very cute, however one might actually want to study Kemetic religion, history, language, and culture before opening their mouths to make such inane statements. This is particularly the case with regard to Egyptian history, language, religion, and culture. The "Blackness" of this African people is not really an issue for me (I'm sure Kemet was not absolutely homogeneous)but it annoys me when silly people confidently assert that these AFRICANS were not Black.Another note: Kemet/Egypt is not the only great African civilization. Those who truly want to study Africa, live as Africans, and or assist in her ressurection cannot allow themselves to be confined to to a single branch of the African family. One more VERY IMPORTANT thing. Black/African people, particularly those who call themselves "Afrocentrists" need to stop focusing so much upon our relationship to Greece and other European civilizations. 1. We need to study Africa and our people in our own right and through our own eyes. "Proof" of our contribution or relationship with a European Civilization should not be viewed as a way of legitimizing or increasing the status of a given African Civilization. 2. Greece and European Civilizations can stand in their own right. Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists do not usually view themselves as such. They view themselves as "orthodox", "careful", "OBJECTIVE", and "SCHOLARLY" (whether they are or not). The fact is they are the established camp and they hold a greater following upon the masses. We must put works such as "Stolen Legacy" to rest and make sure that in our pursuits we are commited to accuracy and truth. This is the only path towards victory. The multitude of African Civilizations are interesting, wonderful, and legitimate without any fantasy and romanticism added to them. Di en ek ankh udja soneb (may there be given to you life, prosperity, and health)

"Stolen Legacy," by Dr. George G. M. James, is a controversial work first published in 1954. To the consternation of some, James dared to assert that the Greeks were not the authors of Greek philosophy, and that so-called Greek philosophy was in fact based upon the primary ideas and concepts borrowed-without acknowledgement-from the ancient Egyptians. Written during Dr. James tenure at the University of Arkansas, "Stolen Legacy" raises more thought-provoking questions and uncomfortable questions than it answers. Though many may disagree with James' findings, his book confirms the words of Solomon, "there is nothing new under the sun." Truth and wisdom has been in existence since time began. Greek culture learned much from the Egyptians. Alexander the Great and the Ptolemy dynasty were Greek, but they did not disturb the religion or the customs of the Egyptians, and indeed built magnificent new temples for the Egyptian gods. Ptolemy I, perhaps with advice from Demetrius of Phalerum, founded the Museum and Library of Alexandria, a key academic, literary, and scientific center which drew the top Greek scholars. In "Stolen Legacy," James shows how famous Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were heavily influenced by Egyptian culture, and how many of their teachings were what they had learned from the Egyptians.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Grammar: A Handbook for Beginners Review

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Grammar: A Handbook for Beginners

Watch out...this is not a modern book.
It is a Dover reprint of an Egyptian grammar published in 1920. If you are interested in the Egyptian language and script, don't waste your money.
I'd recommend either Collier and Manley's "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs" ,or Allen's "Middle Egyptian". Check the reviews for these 2 books, and decide which best suits your goal.

Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs Review

Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs

This is not a book for beginners. It is too full of mistakes, contradictions and academic hubris to rely on. The copy editor of this work should be boiled in oil. For example - the glyph for lasso is called a brazier. Albeit, some of the phrases are of value and the pictures are first-rate.
On page 127, an inscription is shown and the author berates the long-dead scribe for having done it 'improperly'! Great heavenly days!
Intermediate and advanced students of ME will delight in testing their knowledge by conducting a mistake 'treasure hunt'. But others should look elsewhere.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic To English Dictionary Review

Egyptian Hieroglyphic To English Dictionary

This is a dictionary type work that only a scholar would truly use all of. It is great if you need to know the Ancient Egyptian words for a college report. Youngsters will find it possibly a bit too much. If you are looking for an Ancient Egyptian to English translation this book will most likely have it, or a portion, so that the phrase can be found. I used this book in teaching a class to high schoolers and they thought it a good reference but sometimes a bit difficult to find the needed information. I would suggest a tab arrangement to mark out the symbols. This made it easier for my students to find various needed symbols.

An easy to use dictionary containing over 8,000 entries designed for the beginning student. An excellent companion to the author's "How To Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs - For High School Students."The Egyptian hieroglyphic "alphabet" is printed at the front of the book. The hieroglyphs are arranged in hieroglyphic order using Gardiner's familiar "A to Z" arrangement.MDCs and transliterations are intentionally left out since they tend to make it much more difficult for the beginning student to learn. An eBook version for the Kindle is also available.

How To Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: For High School Students In Grades 9 Through 12

A superb book, marked Volume One, suggesting that more are to follow ( I hope). Prof. Nichols has succeeded admirably in his intention to present a simplified starting point for the study of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Although intended for high school students, it is a witty, relevant, and effective introduction for adults as well. He comments briefly on other grammars and dictionaries for hieroglyphs, which is helpful for building one's own library. He additionally has added materials on YouTube, etc. I found his examples to be clear, both in explanations and in the fonts for the hieroglyphs. The book includes a listing of hieroglyphs used, following Gardiner's notation. I did not find information on how to write hieroglyphs, which would be useful if one did not have access to "Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy" by H. G. Fischer. I assume that hieroglyph calligraphy would be taught in the classroom, for those taking a formal class. The book is also available in Kindle format. Perhaps as his work continues Prof. Nichols would consider adding a set of vocabulary flash cards, or perhaps illustrations of rooms, houses, people, etc, with items labeled in both English and hieroglyphs ( rather like the Duden Pictorial Dictionaries). This is the best introduction to Egyptian hieroglyphs that I have found, and reflects current knowledge of the subject, unlike Budge's books.

The Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts (v. 1-3) Review

The Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts (v. 1-3)

There are not words to praise late Dr. Faulkner for the impressive task he had undetook at translating the 7 volumes of the "editio princeps" of the valuable Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts, like he had already done with the Pyramid Texts in 1969. Anybody interested in ancient Egyptian religion and funerary literature must own a copy of this edition, whether under this "omnibus edition, 3 vols. in 1", or the extended edition in 3 vols. MOreover, a new reprint of the same is badly in need for it is very difficulto to find it at hand. So that you known: if you have the chance, and you are looking for an authoritative, researched and scholarly translation: THIS IS THE TITLE YOU MUST OWN1

This authoritative English translation of the Middle Kingdom Coffin Texts is an essential resource for all Egyptologists. The new edition reprints Faulkner's whole work in one volume. Filling the gap between the Pyramid Texts and the New Kingdom Book of the Dead, these writings were intended to supply the deceased with the speeches he would need to achieve a secure and important position in the next world. As such they supply valuable insights into Egyptian beliefs and mortuary practices. Concise textual notes are kept to a minimum, allowing the character of the texts to be experienced as a whole. Indexes cover divinities, localities, celestial bodies, selected Egyptian words in translation and also the parts of boats and sailing gear that figure prominently in some spells.
