The Modern Egyptian Dialect of Arabic: A Grammar with Exercises, Reading Lessons and Glossaries Review

The Modern Egyptian Dialect of Arabic: A Grammar with Exercises, Reading Lessons and Glossaries
Average Reviews:

For some strange reason that eludes me, many respected publishing houses are in the sad habit of reprinting outdated Arabic courses and grammars over and over again. Arabic is one of the larger languages in the world, and the official language of more than twenty countries. Despite this, the treatment of Arabic could not be more different from the treatment of Italian, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese or other comparable languages. While good, extensive and relevant courses, dictionaries and grammars are published all the time for other major languages, lazy publishers refuse to publish any good courses in Arabic.
This book is a case in point. It is published in 2011 and the title says "Modern Egyptian Arabic". Well, this is actually a reprint of a book that was published in the 19th century and is outdated by more than 100 years already! Needless to say, there is nothing modern with the dialect described in it, nor with its layout or organization.
Publishers such as Routledge, Georgetown University Press and Cambridge University Press should all three stop pushing out old and outdated books. However, only you as a customer can make them. It is of course cheaper to reprint rubbish like this book than to commission someone to write an extensive new book. As long as we keep buying these outdated reprints, no change will come.

Originally published in 1895, the aim of this book was to provide the reader with a guide to the contemporary spoken Arabic of Egypt, with special reference to the speech of Cairo and its neighbourhood. The greater part of the text provides the reader with the basic grammatical structure of the language. Additionally, there is a concise introduction explaining the different varieties of spoken Arabic in their relationship with Classical Arabic. Reading exercises and a sizeable glossary are contained towards the end of the text. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Arabic and the history of linguistics.

Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists Review

Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a writer, I love and use aphorisms all the time. They add to your writing and help the reader understand and appreciate what you write. An aphorism is a short, witty, philosophical saying. Here are a couple of examples:
When I am shaving in the morning and I behold my rapidly receding hairline--a modest curl rushing towards the crown of my head like some follicular riptide--I think of Jean Cocteau and his quip: "Mirrors would do well to reflect a little more before sending back images."
"Sex without love is an empty gesture. But as empty gestures go, it is one of the best."
I find using aphorisms fun. I also find they give my writing wit and humor, which my readers enjoy.
This is a comprehensive guide to aphorisms and is a wonderful tool for writers and public speakers as well as must-have reading for all language lovers.
You'll find aphorisms from such notables as Sun Tzu and Desmond Tutu. I think there are around 400 or so aphorisms in the book.
When I started stocking my writing library many years ago, one of the main books recommended to me was a good book of aphorisms. So I will pass that recommendation on. And this would be a great book to fill that bill.

Bestselling expert James Geary's enlightening, entertaining compendium of wit and wisdom, from Sun Tzu to Desmond Tutu--and 350 aphorists in between. Both an expert and a collector, James Geary has devoted his life to aphorisms--and the last few years to organizing, indexing, and even translating them. The result is Geary's Guide, featuring classic writers like Voltaire, Twain, Shakespeare, and Nietzsche, but also more surprising figures, such as Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali, Emily Dickinson, and Mae West. Some of the aphorists appear in English for the first time. But it is more than just a conventional anthology. It is also an encyclopedia, containing brief biographies of each author in addition to a selection of his or her aphorisms. The book is a field guide, too, with aphorists organized into eight different "species," such as Comics, Critics & Satirists; Icons & Iconoclasts; and Painters & Poets. The book's two indexes--by author and by subject--make it easily searchable, while its unique organizational structure and Geary's lively biographical entries make it different from all previous reference works.Geary's Guide is eminently suitable for browsing or for sustained reading. A comprehensive guide to our most intimate, idiosyncratic literary form, the book is an indispensable tool for writers and public speakers as well as essential reading for all language lovers.

This two book set has some merits as an extensive base of heiroglyphic information. It is put together in a fairly easy to use format. HOWEVER!
Please be wary that this is the second half of the complete book. The first volume, or the first half of the dictionary, is not available for purchase. Before you think of purchasing this title, be sure that you have found the first volume, otherwise the back half is more than useless. I purchased this thinking I would easily find the first half, but was proved wrong.
Due to the outdated nature of this material, I recommend you find a more contemporary dictionary of Ancient Egyptian that is in its entirety.

Volume 1 of the monumental work containing about 25,000 words and terms that occur in texts ranging from 3000 B.C. to 600 A.D. Each entry consists of a transliteration of the word, the word in hieroglyphs, and the meaning in English. Indispensable to serious student.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Reading Book for Beginners Review

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Reading Book for Beginners
Average Reviews:

This book has only one good thing: it gives original texts in hieroglyphics from various periods of Egypt. But, many scholars have found that Budge's system is outdated and unreliable. So, if you can't decipher hieroglyphics, I wouldn't reccomend buying this book. Most of all, he doesn't even give translations for all the texts! He gives 8 out of the 20 scripts in english. Heck, the guy's been dead for 100 years, and we've made new discoveries in deciphering Ancient Egyptian. There are many other authors on hieroglyphics that are much more accurate in their translations. Don't be like me and waste your money on this horrible book.

Handbook to Life in Ancient Egypt (Facts on File Library of World History) Review

Handbook to Life in Ancient Egypt (Facts on File Library of World History)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A wonderful book to replace the very outdated and patently racist "Life in Ancient Egypt" by Erman, David's coffee-table book about the worldview and culture of the ancient Egyptians is quite nice. Be aware of a tendency to read certain portions of Egyptian life as "coming from an outside source" (an oblique reference to the outdated "Dynastic Race Theory" that, sadly, still seems to be held to by some British archaeologists). Otherwise factual, useful, and filled with an excellent bibliography.

Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs Review

Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs
Average Reviews:

This is not a book for beginners. It is too full of mistakes, contradictions and academic hubris to rely on. The copy editor of this work should be boiled in oil. For example - the glyph for lasso is called a brazier. Albeit, some of the phrases are of value and the pictures are first-rate.
On page 127, an inscription is shown and the author berates the long-dead scribe for having done it 'improperly'! Great heavenly days!
Intermediate and advanced students of ME will delight in testing their knowledge by conducting a mistake 'treasure hunt'. But others should look elsewhere.

The Rosetta Stone and the Rebirth of Ancient Egypt (Wonders of the World) Review

The Rosetta Stone and the Rebirth of Ancient Egypt (Wonders of the World)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I knew little about the Rosetta Stone other than what I had learned in school many years ago. Every schoolchild learns that the Rosetta Stone, found in 1799 along the Nile delta, had the same text in three different languages -- Egyptian hieroglyphics, Egyptian demotic (the language of the people), and Greek -- that allowed scholars to, for the first time, decipher Egyptian hierglyphics, thus making it possible to read all the already-found (and subsequently-found) hieroglyphic texts that up to that time had simply not been decipherable. This made possible, really, the study of ancient Egypt as never before, and indeed the whole field of Egyptology. John Ray, professor of Egyptology at Cambridge, writes a fascinating history of the Stone, its discovery, early attempts at deciphering it, the partial success of Thomas Young and the final decipherment by Jean-Francois Champollion. He also gives a history of Greek occupation of Egypt leading up to the creation of the Rosetta Stone in 196 BC early in the reign of Ptolemy V. And he addresses the question of who really owns these treasures of antiquity such as the Stone, the Elgin Marbles and so on. He also gives his own translation of the actual Rosetta Stone text.
Part of what makes this book so compulsively readable is Ray's dry sense of humor. He sneaks in wry comments in the most unexpected places and I found myself chuckling frequently. The book, intended for the general reader, is never guilty of talking down and for that one can be thankful.
Recommended.
Scott Morrison

How To Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: For High School Students In Grades 9 Through 12 Review

How To Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: For High School Students In Grades 9 Through 12

A superb book, marked Volume One, suggesting that more are to follow ( I hope). Prof. Nichols has succeeded admirably in his intention to present a simplified starting point for the study of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Although intended for high school students, it is a witty, relevant, and effective introduction for adults as well. He comments briefly on other grammars and dictionaries for hieroglyphs, which is helpful for building one's own library. He additionally has added materials on YouTube, etc. I found his examples to be clear, both in explanations and in the fonts for the hieroglyphs. The book includes a listing of hieroglyphs used, following Gardiner's notation. I did not find information on how to write hieroglyphs, which would be useful if one did not have access to "Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy" by H. G. Fischer. I assume that hieroglyph calligraphy would be taught in the classroom, for those taking a formal class. The book is also available in Kindle format. Perhaps as his work continues Prof. Nichols would consider adding a set of vocabulary flash cards, or perhaps illustrations of rooms, houses, people, etc, with items labeled in both English and hieroglyphs ( rather like the Duden Pictorial Dictionaries). This is the best introduction to Egyptian hieroglyphs that I have found, and reflects current knowledge of the subject, unlike Budge's books.

Hieroglyph Detective: How to Decode the Sacred Language of the Ancient Egyptians Review

Hieroglyph Detective: How to Decode the Sacred Language of the Ancient Egyptians
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been teaching myself Middle Egyptian from Allen's book but there's a difference between the clean and nicely formatted and fully formed sentences there and the stylized abbreviated inscriptions on the monuments pictured in this book. It's wonderful to see so many real examples in their original context and it's wonderful to see so much discussion devoted to each example. So I'd say this book is a must-buy for beginners in Middle Egyptian who want to read inscriptions, along with Collier and Manley.
One of the toughest things I've found is dealing with variations in ancient "handwriting". This book has really helped by displaying nicely formatted text alongside the original.
Seems like it might be a tough book for people not also studying hieroglyphs through another source. Without some familiarity, the ancient Egyptian habit of abbreviating words, reordering words, using random seeming "spellings", dropping grammatical endings and so on could make the amount of unsystematized information bewildering.
If you're looking for some supplemental hieroglyph reading, get this book.
But if you're looking for a taste of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but you're not yet ready for a heavyweight grammar, still get this book.
I hope we get a sequel.

What a wonderful book!
The author takes 100 of the hieroglyphs used in writing Egyptian, and used in Egyptian art. (Symbols are identified by the Gardiner code number.) He dedicates 2 pages to each symbol - the right-hand page gives an analysis of the meaning and uses of the symbol, and the left-hand page, through line drawings and photographs, illustrates how the symbol is used.
Whether you study it page by page, or just dip in and browse, this book can be used, with profit, by anyone interested in the language or art of ancient Egypt.

The legacy of Egyptian art, from colossal statues to finely wrought jewellery and minuscule charms, can appear deceptively simple. Without knowledge of the hieroglyphic images incorporated in the art, much remains obscure. Here is an introduction to the symbolic language of hieroglyphs: a directory of the one hundred signs used most often in Egyptian painting and sculpture - from "seated man" and "lion" to "vulture" and "ankh". This guide offers a comprehensive explanation of the symbols, their origins, identification and uses. The hieroglyphs are arranged thematically, fully cross-referenced, and illustrated by newly-commissioned drawings and photographs. The result is a companion for all those interested in the mysteries of ancient Egyptian art.
