Muti's Necklace: The Oldest Story in the World Review

What a great gift for a young child. The writing doesn't talk down to kids but keeps their attention. The story is tightly constructed with a strong woman character (so hard to find in books sometimes!) - combined with a sorccercer and a snake what more could you ask for. Set in ancient Egypt timeless ideas about power and family are raised. The pictures are gorgeous!!!

Invoke the Goddess; Visualizations of Hindu, Greek, and Egyptian Deities Review

Invoke the Goddess; Visualizations of Hindu, Greek, and Egyptian Deities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The strength of this book lies in the ritual baths and goddess meditations. While I thought the meditations were a bit too structured and guided, I appreciated the creativity behind them. It did surprise me, however, that the suggestion was placed where a goddess may refuse you during the meditation. I think planting that idea in someone's head is defeating the purpose of the working. It would have been better to say "how does the goddess respond to you" instead of going into the meditation worry if the goddess is going to refuse you. Also, there was little mention of thanking that goddess for her gifts/audience.
I thought the weakness of the book was in the Mundane Archetypes. For the most part, it gave the impression that the goddess are petty and the information did not necessarily follow the mythology presented earlier in the chapter - especially for Artemis (orgies?!). The book "Goddesses in Everywoman" by Jean Shinoda Bolen is a much better resources for this type of information. I think the author would have been better served to leave out these sections and maybe focussed more on the Tarot aspects.
I would recommend this book for the ritual baths and meditations (with less structure). I would not turn to it as a resource for goddess information. However, I was inspired to check out the author's bibliography to see where she got her background information.

The Book of Gods & Goddesses: A Visual Directory of Ancient and Modern Deities Review

The Book of Gods and Goddesses: A Visual Directory of Ancient and Modern Deities
Average Reviews:

This is an interesting little book I got from the library.
For those interested, here's a list of all the cultures/whatnot that this book explores by listing some of its gods and goddesses: Mesopotamia, Persia, and Canaan; Egyptian; Greek and Roman; Celtic; Norse; Aztec and Maya; Native North and South American; Indian; Chinese; Japanese; African; Afro-Caribbean.
It was pretty interesting to look at all the different cultures and their Gods. I was mainly interested in reading the entry about the Greek Goddes Hekate (also spelled 'Hecate') and wasn't disappointed. Though, this is the first time I've seen an illustartuion of Her with snakes for hair. (Looked more like Medusa to me, who wasn't included in this book.)
This book also includes a little about each culture before listing its Gods (which all have some kind of an illustration). It also has an index of all the Gods included, which makes it much easier if you're searching for a specific one.
All in all, a pretty interesting little book. As I said before, I borrowed mine from the library. You might want to check if you're library has it just to make sure if this is something you want to buy.

The Mysteries of Isis: Her Worship & Magick (Llewellyn's World Religion and Magic Series) Review

The Mysteries of Isis: Her Worship and Magick (Llewellyn's World Religion and Magic Series)
Average Reviews:

This book could be subtitled: "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know about Isis, But Didn't Know Where to Find it..." There's a LOT of information here, from clothing and divination to mythology and history. The information is presented in an interesting and quite readable manner and there are tons of illustrations. If you have believed that Isis was solely an Egyptian Goddess, Goddess of Love and the Great Mother, this book will set you straight, showing you Isis as Goddess of Healing and Magick, Sun and Moon Goddess, Goddess of the Stars and Earth and much more. She is associated with Gods and Goddesses of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Greek and Asian pantheons. I highly recommend this book for the student, worshipper and researcher of Isis.

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn Review

Dreams of Isis: A Woman's Spiritual Sojourn
Average Reviews:

This delightfully named book is an autobiography of the writer's journey through the Ancient Egyptian myths and symbols. In essence it is a spiritual voyage of discovery which entwines in it discussions of scholarly texts. The end result of the author's experiences is a collection of insights into the human experience and psyche. The book is divided into three parts (The light of heaven; The bodies of light; The light within), has no illustrations, and offers a good 13-page bibliography and excellent footnotes. She discusses the Pyramid Text of Unas, the Legend of Ra and Sekhmet, the opposition of Osiris and Seth, and the Myth of Isis and Orisis, as well as the Ka, Ba and Akh of the Ancient Egyptian, among several subjects. It is recommended for the spiritually open-minded.

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Cunningham's Encyclopedia Series) Review

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Cunningham's Encyclopedia Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Scott Cunningham, in his time, turned out quite a few books and references for the modern, 'practical' witch. Though many of the herbs listed seem arcane- when I bought this book it was the first time I had heard of herbs like eryngo and life-everlasting- this reference is well done.
The herbs are organized alphabetically, and black and white drawings of the plant or flower are to the side of each entry, which typically includes the scientific (Latin) name, health codes (such as G for safe, and a guide is included in the book for all of the codes), any folk names, its attributed gender, planet, element, and deities, followed by brief (or sometimes long) descriptions of ritual and magical uses.
After the listings of herbs, there are lists of categories, under which are listed what herbs fit that area- such as masculine plants, herbs that correspond to certain ritual intentions, and elementary rulers. Also included are an index, a glossary, and a mail order list for those who do not have an herb store nearby (and it's hard to find something like mandrake in your local grocery store!).
Granted, this book is not the be-all and end-all of herbal studies. I recommend finding yourself at least three good sources and using them together when using herbs.

Do you work magic with herbs? Do you use them in spells, for talismans or simply use their innate powers? If you don't have Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, you need to get it right away. This book has become a classic in its field. Paul Beyerl, a respected author on herbs calls it "…an essential reference book by students of herbalism and magick alike … Scott's personable charm touches every page… I highly recommend this book." And Jeanne Rose, famous author of books on herbs and developer of an herbal course says "I love books like this … It is accessible, easy to read, and with its encompassing index (all too often neglected), simple to use as well." Over 200,000 people already have this book and use it frequently. In this edition of the book (it's expanded and revised on the 15th anniversary of original publication) you will find the magical properties and folklore of over 400 herbs! You'll also find lists of herbs based on their magical powers, their genders, their planetary rulers, and more. Perhaps the most important list is the folk name cross-reference. With that information, when a recipe calls for "bramble, " you'll know it needs blackberry. Or if the magic calls for "enebro," you'll know you that is juniper. The main part of this book is the listings of the herbs. Each one includes names, associations, and magical attributions. Violets can be used for protection, luck, love, and more. Primrose is for protection and love. Garlic is for protection, healing, exorcism, lust, and prevention of theft. This book is considered a classic. It is probably consulted more than any other book on this subject. If you want to learn the secrets of magical herbs, this book is a must!

Isis, Queen of Egyptian Magic Review

Isis, Queen of Egyptian Magic
Average Reviews:

This is a good book. There are many beautiful pictures, and the book itself is very easy to understand. There are a few spells and chants, but not so much on rituals. It tells a great story of Isis and her life. Easy to follow. It looks like a thin book, but it has a lot of information in it. I especially love the horoscope section where they mention auspicious days of the year. This book is a fun read and the author writes in a language that makes it very easy to understand. This was my first book on Isis, and it is good for learning about her life. For learning about her rituals and what not, Isis Magic by M. Isidora Forrest is the best choice.

Fact panels and myths provide additional information on the background of each enchantment, and on ancient Egyptian life. A Selection of the One Spirit Book Club.

Egyptian Paganism for Beginners: Bring the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt into Daily Life Review

Egyptian Paganism for Beginners: Bring the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt into Daily Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It should be noted first off that this is not a book of ancient Egyptian paganism as it would have been practiced, but rather a modern interpretation using Egyptian godforms in a modern neo-pagan setting, helpfully divided into two sections.
In part one, Egyptian concepts of God are related with the authors' understanding that 'each of the major neteru can represent the Supreme Being, each showing a slightly different facet of the One who is unknowable and inconceivable in his or her entirety. The neteru retain their individual identities, so the devotee is able to encounter the One in a very personal and intimate way.' (pg 7) Briefly described are a few Egyptian-specific terms such as the ka, sekhem, and the Heavenly Trine, and fortunately the authors honestly note that one 'cannot be sure that the ancient Egyptian words?mean the exact equivalent of terms we use today for such concepts' (pg 11). Also described are the elements involved in creating a shrine, the opening of the mouth ceremony, and further notes on Egyptian magick; as well as general pagan and magickal concepts such as casting a circle, totem and assumption of godforms.
The second part is dedicated to the various Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. Following various descriptions of their histories throughout the dynasties are invocations, replies, calls, meditations and commentary for many of the major Gods and Goddesses. Though they do state that it is '?not intended to be a dictionary of gods and goddesses the neteru are not presented in alphabetical order, but in the order that we believe is going to be the most helpful for explaining the nature of ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and practices, showing an overall view of the religions' further noting that 'only a small selection of the neteru is featured' (pg 8).
There are, however, a few points of contention. For one, the understanding of chakra and kundalini lore was very simplified, and not really relevant to the text at hand, having no sensible place in Egyptian religion. Also, there did seem to be an overabundance of comparisons to Judeo-Christian mythology, perhaps they're trying to provide a reference point for those coming from such a background, but I found it more of a distraction than useful. There's no need to equate the two, as they come from completely different mythological and ritual backgrounds.
While not an expression of ancient Egyptian religion and ritual as it may have been practiced, it does provide a basic introduction to modern Egyptian paganism, not a bad start to one's exploration of this path.

Ancient Egyptian Divination and Magic Review

Ancient Egyptian Divination and Magic

I have studied Egyptology for 27 years. This is the first and only book that offers a complete how-to guide for the ancient practice of divination and magic. It's not a New Age smo0ke and mirrors book..... the spells and divination information is taken directly from ancient scriptures. The text is footnoted. The author did her research and condensed the information in an easy-to-read how-to guide. I have dozens of more scholarly books and most do not contain the divination information found in this little number. I have referred to this book over and over again. It is easy to read for beginners and offers easy reference for us old-time armchair Egyptologists.

CIRCLE OF ISIS
By Ellen Cannon Reed
The title is decieving becasue the book is not all about Isis and thats the big reason I ordered this book. But I understand why she called it the Circle of Isis for her love of Isis is so strong. I think Egyptian Wicca would have been more appropiate. Now Mrs Reed doe not claim that she is recreating the magick that the ancient Egyptians used, she states that she is adopting the Egyptian pantheon into her Wiccan beliefs. She gives the experience that she had with the Egyptian deities and the experience that her coven had with them as well. You will find magick in this book but not spells like "to get a lover" or to "to heal a burn" the magick you will learn is with the deities. She gives some wonderful information on quite of few of the gods and goddesses major and minor deities. She gives you recipes for oil and incense for diffrent deities. Also she gives out guided meditations on meeting the deities and ritual on how to contact them. She gives out rituals that are suitable for solitary practice and rituals suitable for a group of people. there are wonderful hymns to the gods and goddesses, instructions on making an Egyptian wand, sistrum, kilt, scarab, wax and ushbati figures and more. She also includes Hierogyphics and their translations and other stuff as well. I honestly could not put this book down I was so fascinated with it. This book is indeed interesting. The book is pure devotion you can feel the authers love for the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt.
Im giving it 4 stars
