Gender and Aging in Mesopotamia: The Gilgamesh Epic and Other Ancient Literature Review

Gender and Aging in Mesopotamia: The Gilgamesh Epic and Other Ancient Literature

This is an interesting way of viewing myths. It is a scholarly book, even if one does not read the footnotes. For scholars, this is a useful book, and I refer to the author's viewpoints when I write about mythology.
The author has clearly done a great deal of useful research. Her style of writing is accessible, not convoluted like many scholarly works which are meant for a limited group of people willing to read the book and every single footnote.

Rivkah Harris's cross-cultural and multidisciplinary approach breaks new ground in assessing Mesopotamian attitudes toward youth and mature adulthood, aging and the elderly, generational conflict, gender differences in aging, relationships between men and women, women's contributions to cultural activities, and the "ideal woman."

To uncover Mesopotamian perspectives, Harris combed through primary sources - including literature and myth, letters, economic and legal texts, and visual materials. Even such pivotal cultural influences as the Gilgamesh Epic and Enuma Elish are reinterpreted in an original manner.

Ancient Egypt (Technology in the Time of) Review

Ancient Egypt (Technology in the Time of)

This book had too many pictures and not enough information. It jumped from one topic to another too quickly, and it never really went deep into any topic. This book is ideal for people who just want a brief idea of what life was like in ancient Egypt, but is not very useful for projects or lots of info. It was very boring for me to read.

This book has great pictures and is very informative in an easy to read format. I am very Christian but in no way were we offended in the way it discussed the gods of Egypt. They believed in gods and they are taught as part of history.

The Shipwrecked Sailor: An Egyptian Tale with Hieroglyphs Review

The Shipwrecked Sailor: An Egyptian Tale with Hieroglyphs

Imagine you are a sailor on your way to work in the mines. You ship gets wrecked by a hugh wave in a storm. You are the only survivor. You float toward an island. Once you get on land the trees split and the earth trembles. A giant snake appears who demands to know how you got there. This is BAD!
When you are rescued four months later you have made a friend and you are rich. This is GOOD!
Based on a papyrus scroll from the 19th century B.C.E., this tale is illustrated with Egyptian designs from tombs and temples of the New Kingdom. There are hieroglyphs translating some of the story. The illustrator, Tamara Bower, includes explanations on the symbols she uses in the artwork and a detailed history of the Pharaoh's gold mines in Nubia and Punt.
Things both GOOD and BAD. This book is a MUST HAVE!

Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement Review

Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement

Prichard's ANET is a standard reference for those examining the cultural setting of the Bible. It contains translations of many important inscriptions which shed light on otherwise mysterious Bible customs.
Generally regarded as a scholarly work, it's worth checking out for the layperson as well. Some of the jargon may be a little tricky, but there's no substitute for original source material, which makes up the majority of the book. Besides, some of the stories are just a plain old (very old) good read.
Included are such things as the Epic of Gilgamesh (containing our oldest Flood parallels), the Nuzi Texts (which help us understand the life of Jacob, among others), and various of the ancient law codes which have parallels to the biblical code.
Tremendously useful for study!

Tales of the Dead: Ancient Egypt Review

Tales of the Dead: Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

"Tales of the Dead-Ancient Egypt" is an intertwined text that combines a short graphic novel and factoids about Ancient Egypt. The graphic novel tale of two kids and their run in with tomb robbers is basic and not especially good. But what really makes this book are the "factoids" and the wonderfully detailed illustrations that accompany them. Richard Bonson is a gifted illustrator who specializes in detailed cross sectional renderings of buildings. The Italian illustrators from Studio Inklink are an especially capable group of historical illustrators. The illustrations in this book are first rate and a used copy can be purchased at little cost. All in all, I thought "Tales of the Dead-Ancient Egypt" was a very good purchase.

As a homeschooling mom, I highly value books that inform my child about historical facts, while captivating them with exciting stories. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to any Egyptian studies. Written in "newspaper format", it is a joy to read aloud to my children. Using imaginative headlines and wonderful illustrations and photos, this book has definitely captured my child's attention. The plethora of historical facts presented are accurate and entertaining. I would recommend this book for children between the ages of 5-12.
