Short Role-playing Simulations for Middle School World History Review

Short Role-playing Simulations for Middle School World History

The ideas for the role playing activies are good, some are new to me as well. I use the one where the kids set off on an exploration to set up a new colony (I adapt the lesson to fit my standards) and they roll a dice to see how the weather is, where they land, how the natives react to them, etc. However, the book itself looks self-published, the handouts are boring.

Egyptian Designs CD-ROM and Book (Dover Electronic Clip Art) Review

Great fun, you find a use. Many illustrations from 19th C. sources. Sphinx, mummies, mourners, chariots, gods, this book's got 'em all! As with the other Dover clip art books/CD-ROMs you can pull them off the CD-ROM without actually importing them onto your HD. This collection is among my favorites, along with Dover's books & reading, food & drink and animals software sets.

Ancient Egypt (Sacred Symbols) Review

Ancient Egypt (Sacred Symbols)

At first glance this miniature Thames and Hudson treasure seems like a greeting card, but the excellent color photographs and succint text provide a miniature tour of some of the finest jewels of ancient craft. The book is not large enough for more esorteric commentary, but the fine pictures display details welcomed by modern designers and metal smiths. This highly portable work is an excellent addition to any collector's library.

"Sacred Symbols" is a series of volumes that introduce the ancient, universal wisdoms of humankind. Symbol and ritual go to the heart of human experience. Throughout history humans have developed elaborate symbolic systems to help allay their fear of the unknown and to tap the deep well-springs of spirituality. Today, people are discovering the relevance of these belief systems to life in the 1990s. This volume covers the symbols of Ancient Egypt. The whole observable world was, for the Ancient Egyptians, a symbolic representation. From the sun and the river Nile, which gave them food and sustenance, to the animal kingdom and even architecture, different phenomena were seen to have hidden meanings. Symbolism, at its deepest level, was the means by which the Egyptians interpreted the nature of life itself - the creation, the after-life and the struggle between good and evil.

Ancient and Medieval Siege Weapons: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Siege Weapons and Tactics Review

Ancient and Medieval Siege Weapons: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Siege Weapons and Tactics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sub-Title: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Siege Weapons and Tactics ==This is a beautifully illustrated book on the seige weapons used by most of the major armies from Ancient Egypt through the mid 1400's. It is surprisingly detailed. It is based, in the early days at least, on drawings carved into rock. These have been re-sketched so that the points he is trying to make. In the more recent times, printed materias were used and these make pictures that are (somewhat) more clear. Finally an artist Vladimir Golubev (I presume) made a series of absolutely beautiful color drawings to illustrate various siege engines.
The written part was done by Dr. Nossov and originally published in Russian. It is clearly a work of schlorship that may become the standard by which others are compared in future years. Certainly I have never seen a more complete or better written description of these engines.

Thought this book would make a great gift for my eight year old grandchild and really enjoyed this book myself! Graphic and entertaining, I couldn't put it down. What a way to sneak in a little learning in the process. Love the illustrator's style and find the characters are so endearing and funny. FIVE STARS!! ***** Can't wait to purchase the other book in the series, Viking Dudes as I am sure it will have the same appeal.
