(More customer reviews)Gardner explains further why Jesus and the Holy bloodline of the Grail is special in this volume. The Annunnaki gods created Adam, who was the first priest king carrying more of the god's genes than the rest of us. This royal line has supposedly preserved its genetics down through time to the present day.
There is an compelling section on how the Hebrew Bible is largely influenced from previous Sumerian works such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. There is also an attempt to explain why the Sumerian was such an anomalously advanced civilization when compared to others at the time. Gardner thinks it's because of the genetic tinkering of the gods with the human line.
Gardner does an interesting analysis on the Moses story in the Bible and comes to the conclusion that he was actually the abdicated king Akhenaton, a half Hebrew, half Egyptian king deposed because of his insistence on imposing a monotheistic god on the Egyptian populace. Various inconsistencies in the Bible are discussed and Gardner comes to the conclusion that it is a corrupted text from the older Sumerian accounts, corrupted for the religious/ political reasons of the Jewish and Christian priesthood.
Gardner stands things on their head, saying that Cain is actually the holy bloodline and not the inferior line of Seth. The Serpent in the Garden is actually the Annunaki god Enki who offers wisdom to humanity as opposed to his brother Enlil, which is the Hebrew god who wants to keep us down. Miriam is not mentioned much in the Bible, but actually she was a prominent religious leader of the Hebrews, but she was shafted by the male priesthood who wanted to get her out the Bible because she was female. Standard blasphemous stuff, you know. Gardner says that our religious beliefs are starting to change because of all the archeological documents that have been discovered which give us a different account of what we have been told traditionally. I suppose it's easy to be fooled with the Biblical stories. People are introduced to them at a young age when their critical faculties are low.
I liked this one better than Bloodline because it didn't get bogged down with a lot of name dropping and intricate genealogies, although these lines are listed and commented on some. I'm really neutral on the revelations. I suppose it will be welcomed by modernists and scorned by traditionalists in the endless chatter of society. I don't know if it will change my personal views much. It was a mind bending trip though. There are actually other authors out there that have looked at archeological evidence and claim that the Bible is accurate, so it comes down to who you want to believe. Everyone has their clever arguments for everything.
And oh yeah, I've read that David Icke has a tape out saying that this guy is nefarious Reptile alien, so who can you trust? Maybe such accusations stem from class conflict or professional jealousy. Both authors cover similar territory and have similar views. Gardner is high born and Icke is well, a former soccer player/hooligan from the projects.

(More customer reviews)The authors ignore respected sources that apply very directly to their work, and the various observations regarding the serpent icon, meaning and myth.
By not including Marija Gimbutas various archeolgical books ("The Language of the Goddess: Unearthing the Hidden Symbols of Western Civilization" for one), nor Barbara G. Walker's "The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects" as well as "The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets" Serpent Grail authors rob their arguments of strong investigators of relevant subject matter. Further, they do not seem to know of Jeremy Narby's "Cosmic Serpent" which offers much insight into an intriguing indigenous and shamanic interpretaion of serpent, life force, and what we call DNA.
Worse, in my opinion all too often the authors ramble on and in sudden "deus ex machina" fashion include "And so it is obvious that...."
What follows is a conclusion unsupported by reasoned presentation based on facts. Rather, a string of events, and suppositions are offered, and quickly summed up as clearly proving whatever the authors are selling.
I wanted this book to be so much better than it is. I think it a shame Gimbutas and Walker are not included as their work is so very relevant to this book and its premises. Further, with more rigorous scholarship and intellectual discipline the case the authors are making would be much better served.

From these studies the author developed unique insights. His perspective of the earth, time, and its place in space ... is a very fascinating reading experience. His hypothesis is based on connections he has made from ancient and modern astronomical and scientific discoveries. He noted one main distinguishing difference between ancient and modern man is the concept of time. Modern man is obsessed with a linear focus - seeming to view events and discoveries on the basis of evolution, going from the simpler to more complex level. Ancient cultures however, viewed time as cyclical, even the Old Testament speaks of a time and season for every purpose and event. The ancient Babylonians, the Egyptians who built the pyramids, the shamans of the Hopi Indians of North America, the Mayan Indians of Central America, and the oldest civilization in the world which existed in India - all had an obsession with time. They demonstrated this knowledge by tracking the stars in the heavens and leaving monuments which are often records of their discoveries. Noting the abundant scientific evidence for the cyclical nature of many biological, physiological, and chemical life processes ... the author noted that ancient people had recognized patterns and cycles of the stars and its causes. Each suspense filled chapter is an adventurous read which unfolds fascinating ancient scientific knowledge of astronomical observations comparing it to the modern scientific view. The author includes a very helpful glossary for complicated terms and unfamiliar concepts. He provides a wonderful bibliography referenced by footnotes in each chapter where supporting data and the ideas can be verified by any curious reader. There is a terrific appendix with eight sections which is an added bonus that includes otherwise difficult to obtain information. The author created the four tiered Galileo Awards each with a substantial monetary award attached, in order to challenge the scientific community to provide the scientific evidence required to prove once and for all ... the existence of the binary twin associated with our sun. I give 10 stars to this book as recommendation for anyone interested in ancient cultures, myths, and astronomy.

The Murder of Tutankhamen Review

(More customer reviews)Granted the evidence presented by this book is by no means conclusive, I've got to say that if more history books were written with this much verve, fewer kids would graduate school convinced that "history is boring." Brier loves what he does, and he's very well-read in it, and it shows. You get a real feel for the political intrigue of the time right after the heresies of Amarna, and he presents the information in such a way that you never forget that there are actually human personalities associated with these events. The book does a great job getting across the flavor of life in that time, and certainly it does convince me at least that something fishy was going on at the end of Tut's reign.
However, that said, I didn't find any of the medical/forensic evidence presented even slightly convincing (and the opening chapter with its dramatic film noir reenactment of the "murder" was a bit much). Tutankhamen's death itself at a young age isn't even suspicious given that there is a good chance he inherited Marfan Syndrome from his father, a disability which has an excellent track record of killing young. And given that the skull and body were grossly damaged by the funerary practices of the time, I don't feel that any solid conclusions can be drawn from the state of either. The political evidence that something fishy was happening is a lot more compelling than the physical evidence -- and Brier knows his Egyptian politics.
Brier clearly knows Egypt well, and loves it, and that intellect and enthusiasm shines through every word, making this book a more than worthwhile read as long as you have your critical filters in place. I look forward to more work from Brier. Even if you don't agree with his conclusions, you've got to admit -- if more historians were this engaging and presented history with this much texture and life, history'd be a whole lot more fun in school, wouldn't it?

Whether you've seen the exhibition or not (I saw it and wrote about it at http://kate.stange.com/egypt/ps.htm), this is more than just a detailed catalogue of all the over 250 exhibition pieces. It is a full-colour, well-written wealth of Amarna information, including a wide variety of essays by all the most well-known Amarna scholars (Johnson, Redford, Lacovara, Mallinson, Reeves, Foster, Freed, Markowitz, Manuelian, Silverman, Kendall, D'Auria, Murnane), a glossary, list of excavations, miscellaneous reference information (such as cartouches of the royalty) and extensive bibliography (the bibliography alone is worth the purchase of this book). In the end, the over 400 colour plates (of sumptuous quality) probably show every Amarna piece I've ever heard of, and then some. They are the real treasure in this book.
If you've never heard of "Amarna" or these pharaohs, this is a fantastic introduction to their unique piece of history and the stunning, unusual (for Ancient Egypt) art! You'll love it. Only it's a little too large to take to bed.

His description of an age of builders, 8,000 years before the 3rd dynasty seemed out of line with accepted theory.
However, Cayce also said that the ancients, led by a charismatic High Priest named Ra Ta, and an architecht named Hermes, were contempory with a failing, and soon to vanish Atlantean civilization, dated by no less than Plato to 10,000 BCE!
In this important book, certain to be followed by others, Andrew Collins begins to answer the challenge posed by traditional archeology:"where is the evidence." He draws on overlooked reports of early archeology, as well as traditional wisdom, local legend, and textual evidence in known antiquities to build a powerful case that the evidence has been under everyones noses all along!
Drawing on all this material Collins puts theory into practice and rediscovers a vast complex of tunnels and caves under the giza plateau! Portions of which show obvious evidence of human alteration. He presents a powerful case that the mythical Hall of Records described by Cayce and many other ancient and modern mystics is located and can be accessed by exploring, and understanding this complex in the context of Egyptian tradition and wisdom.
Some will be dissappointed that Collins hasn't discovered the hall itself, but I think he is being careful and responsible: putting together the pieces of the puzzle in a way that honors the builders of that distant past, rather than playing the arrogant westerner imposing his views (or trying to)on a skeptical Egyptian Archeological establishment.
In the long run, I believe Collins and his approach will win over the doubters, led by Zahi Hawass, Director Of antiquities in Egypt. Then the real work of uncovering the Hall of Records, and presenting it's stored wisdom to a world ready to recieve it.

The Sphinx Mystery: The Forgotten Origins of the Sanctuary of Anubis Review

(More customer reviews)This book is full of information about the sphinx and its surrounding structures that has been compiled by an enormous amount of work by the author. Every person who reads this book will learn some new things, and correct some of their misconceptions about the sphinx. It is inspiring to encounter a researcher who has the abilities to find information from so many different sources--where none of them involve the Internet. His data is based on keen on-site observation, historical documentation, and measurable analysis. The book is mostly written well, and it is a fun and rewarding read. Temple's analysis is creative and gives the reader a lot of things to think about.
Temple does offer many speculations that the reader can ponder. The book is not perfect, and I do not agree with several of Temple's conclusions. For example, after undertaking a fascinating analysis of the Sphinx Temple and its adjacent Valley Temple, the author points out much evidence regarding water weathering due to filling and emptying the moat from the Nile river, the buildings' functional purposes, and underground chamber placement. However, he doesn't mention anything about how the granite block in the Valley Temple are cut to fit the already weathered, and much larger, limestone blocks.
Thus, one of the major arguments presented by John West and Robert Shoch are not considered when Temple dismisses the rainfall theory of the weathering. The author apparently considers the interior granite blocks to have been in existence since the origin of the Valley Temple, which does not seem to fit the on-site evidence. And even though the author is fully aware of other megalithic structures across the world, they are not considered here at all.
In addition, the author simply states that he is not an expert on the climate history of the Giza plateau, and does not even consider this worthy of analysis. This is not an insignificant point, because much of Temple's view regarding Egyptian textual interpretation depends on the Giza plateau being a somewhat sandy desert for several centuries or millenia prior to 3000 BC.
It also seems illogical at times to ascribe high knowledge and understanding to the middle and new kingdom Egyptian priests, and then at other times, to assume a very low level of understanding and petty and/or egotistical behavior that it inconsistent with highly enlightened and spiritually adept priestly initiates.
Another shortcoming of the book is that it does not present the exact date at which the author would place the building of the Giza plateau; rather, it only gives the opinion that it must precede 2700 BC by several centuries. The author makes many references to his forthcoming book, which is titled "Egyptian Dawn." This book will apparently provide Temple's opinion on this matter as well as many others. This is somewhat annoying because it leaves Temple's conclusions on certain issues in limbo. Nonetheless, it is a given that the reader will certainly read this next book when it is published.
The book would have read better if Temple would have stated his thesis and conclusion to each section at the first of the section, rather than forcing the reader to explore whole chapters and then lead up to the climax at the end. Sometimes, this made me impatient for the author to just get straight to the point.
There are many long picture captions that strain the eyes a little, but the captions are at least fully explained. The text does an excellent job of referencing the numbers of the figures and the pages where they occur--and there are lots and lots of pictures and figures!
For those readers interested in Temple's analysis of the Anubis-Sphinx-Sirius connection, it should be mentioned that the author does not mention this at all. Perhaps this will be addressed in his next book. In fact, Sirius is mentioned only once in passing.
It would also have been helpful if Temple would have considered the shamanic interpretation of the relevant Egyptian texts, such as that presented by Jeremy Naydler's book, "Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts," rather than only the funerary interepretation.
Altough the book has several shortcomings, is still an excellent read for everybody.

Lost Cities of the Ancient World Review

(More customer reviews)This book is a nice read if all you want are brief introductions to various lost civilizations around the world. However, the information contained in the book is just that: brief introductions. If you are curious about what life may have been like in the cities discussed, you will be disappointed.
There are no maps showing the layout of each city or their relation to the surrounding terrain or roads. Though these are often explained in words, the lack of maps makes the text difficult to follow. The number of photos is also limited to one or two for each city. Some cities (like Fijiwara-kyo in Japan) have none. And the existing photos do not necessarily correspond to the text. It is a pain reading about various monuments which have survived without an accompanying photo showing what they look like.

You have Colin Wilson, master writer of over 50 books, and Rand Flem-Ath, genius of "When The Sky Fell", both working together to write this piece, and no one reviews it? Holy crap!
Just know this. If you can read this book and still look me in the face and tell me Atlantis wasn't real, I will 100% believe that the Earth has no future.

In 1982, the American scholar Charles Hapgood made an astonishing claim to a young librarian, Rand Flem-Ath - that civilization was almost 100,000 years old and he had the evidence to prove it. Before he could substantiate this remarkable assertion, Hapgood died. Together with fellow author Colin Wilson, Flem-Ath set out to track down the truth behind the scholar's statements. Their study of the world's most sacred sites - Stonehenge, the Great Pyramids and many others - led them to an amazing discovery. Far from being built by local people for local reasons, these monuments formed an undeniable geometrical pattern. This is turn implied the existence of an ancient advanced civilization, one that existed before the Flood that destroyed Atlantis and whose knowledge of the world was far wider than had previously been thought possible. The Cave and the Cathedral: How a Real-Life Indiana Jones and a Renegade Scholar Decoded the Ancient Art of Man Review

(More customer reviews)Usually I don't bother to review books I do not like, but I feel so strongly about the subject of Aczel's book--the prehistoric painted caves of Europe--that I feel I have to warn unwary readers about this book. It seems to be directed toward a general audience yet dresses itself up as a scholarly work. Its dogmatism is illogical and offensive.
In between narratives about his personal visits to caves (two of which I myself have visited, Niaux and Pech Merle) and to other places such as the northernmost native village of Alaska, Aczel tries to survey and pick apart earlier actual experts on the caves, of which he demonstrably is not, as well as to promote the outdated, neoFreudian, structuralist theories of André Leroi-Gourhan, theories which are based on a pseudoscientific reasoning that posits that each "sign [in the caves] has one of two meanings: male or female," as do the incredible, numinous depictions of animals and a few humans and human-animal figures. When you realize that for Leroi-Gourhan bisons are female and horses are male, with similar divisions for the other animals, you begin to understand how preposterous his ideas are.
Meanwhile, Aczel discredits the theory of today's foremost expert on the subject, Jean Clottes (with David Lewis-Williams), that the art represents shamanism. Like Leroi-Gourhan, Clottes and Lewis-Williams feel compelled to bolster their theory with science (in The Shamans of Prehistory: Trance and Magic in the Painted Caves), a fact Aczel conveniently ignores, just as he shows an egregious ignorance about shamanism (did he even read Mircea Eliade's great work, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, on the subject? There is no indication he did). Calling their theory "ludicrous," Aczel claims Clottes and Lewis-Williams maintain "the purpose of all Paleolithic cave art was shamanistic," yet they clearly say, "it would be naive to hope for one complete explanation of parietal art" (The Shamans of Prehistory). Sadly, Aczel is just that naive.
Aczel would have been far better off providing a survey of the history of modern exploration and ideas about European prehistoric cave art, a description of his own experience, and an explanation of his own original thoughts on the topic. Apparently he has none. His book has almost nothing of the cathedral of his title and not enough of the cave.
Having said this, I must say I agree that the Cro-Magnons depicted a dichotomist world of binary oppositions--archetypes in other words. I do not agree that these archetypes were all sexual, far from it. If you want a much better introduction to Cro-Magnon art, read Journey Through the Ice Age, by Paul G. Bahn and Jean Vertut.

Also, modern discoveries and shipwreck finds are written about in length. Scores of maps, photographs, and pictures make this book both interesting to read and beautiful to behold. The Phoenicians, Greeks, early Romans, Minoans, Egyptians, and other important seafaring civilizations are discussed. Every chapter contains several maps, and more than one chapter has at least two dozen beautiful pictures. Information about ancient trade routes, naval battles, and the development of both merchant and military craft is included.
This is an essential book for any library of ancient history, and the maps and pictures make it a work of art. The paper is of the finest quality, and the cover is sturdy. Anyone interested in ancient or navigational history must have this book.

Starting with an analysis of the Nile and how this majestic river is pivotal to understanding this ancient culture, White brings us through a descriptive tour of each of the important contributors to Ancient Egyptian culture; the Pharoh, the Priest, the Architect, the Craftsman and the commonly disregarded peasant. This book, albeit occasionally too factual, has a wealth of information included in its mere 200 pages. The three historical chapters are a welcome synthesis to all of the factual data that was presented earlier. The fold-out summary of the major Pharohs, architectural advances and other contemporary cultures is great for keeping all of the important dates, places and people straight. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the wonders of Egypt.

Egyptian Heritage: Based on the Edgar Cayce Readings Review

(More customer reviews)This book provides a concise summary of the Edgar Cayce material about the origins of the Egyptian civilization. It is a very strange subject and may not appeal to some readers because it is so foreign to the way the world is today. However Cayce fans should enjoy it.
According to Cayce these events took place around 10,500 BC which is a long time ago for trying to figure out what really happened based just on archeological evidence.
Edgar Cayce himself in the form of the Atlantean priest Ra Ta is a central figure in the story. It is my understanding that Cayce was the reincarnation of the Egyptian god Osiris and Ra Ta had a god like role in all of this. In fact without Ra Ta the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the many other mysterious monuments and temples in Egypt may not even exist today.
Cayce's statements about Atlantis and ancient Egypt answer many questions but they raise so many more. There are many, many details which Cayce never elaborated on. In some cases Cayce stated that it was not even possible to explain certain things using verbal language.

Ancient Mysteries Review

(More customer reviews)When I first saw the title "Ancient Mysteries" I was immediately put off by the title and thought: here goes another "aliens built the pyramids" New Age woo woo book. My closer read of the editorial reviews at Amazon indicated the book took a more sensible approach.
Authors James and Thorpe do a great job of going through the various architectural and technological wonders of the ancient world. The book is a compendium of loosely linked chapters and the sections could easily be read backwards without losing much meaning.
Though the book does a lot of debunking of fringe archeology, it does it in a very effective way. Rather than hitting hard at some of the fringe theories right up front, the authors do their best to present those theories in the best light possible. Often they got me hooked on them. Then they very gently begin to tear down the theories with hard evidence. (Which is often ignored or conveniently overlook by the fringe proponents.) I constantly felt the little voice inside me going "Uh oh..."
You won't come away with any great understanding of the ancient world, the authors cover far too much ground for that. You will however have a fun -- and extensive read, and will gain some insight into how science and archeolgy work together.
I was a little disappointed that they barely covered some of the issues concerning the ancient Pueblo sites here in New Mexico.
