Brotherhood of Kings: How International Relations Shaped the Ancient Near East Review

Brotherhood of Kings: How International Relations Shaped the Ancient Near East

In the epilogue of her engaging study, Dr. Podany observes that the ancient Near East lacks a storyteller like Herodotus for ancient Greece or Livy for Roman history. Although she is obviously no "ancient", she certainly is a storyteller par excellence. She draws her readers into the Near Eastern world of 2500-1300 BCE. One encounters the familiar in places like Babylonia and Egypt, but, more important, unfamiliar realms like Ebla, Mittani, and Hatti. The same is true in terms of historical persons: the familiar Sargon, Amenhotep, and Nefertiti and the unfamiliar Irkab-damu, Suppiluliuma, and Tushratta. Besides elucidating the diplomatic relationships between these ancient kings, Dr. Podany provides us with an amazing view into the daily lives of ordinary people who lived in the ancient Near East. To keep track of persons and gods, she provides a "Cast of Main Characters" and a "Time Line", so her readers will know who lived where and when. Although she does not pursue the issue to any great degree, certain parallels are perceptible in present diplomatic relationships. The general reader will find this a fascinating and worthwhile adventure and will benefit from suggestions for further reading. The scholarly reader will appreciate the footnotes at the end of the text, as well as the ample bibliography.

History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations, Grades 1-3 Review

History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations, Grades 1-3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used these pockets to help me teach my children at home about ancient civilizations, although I mainly relied on Story of the World, Volume 1: Ancient Times Audiobook CD: From the Earliest Nomads to the Late Roman Empire, Revised Edition (7 CDs). Fortunately they fit beautifully together. The Story of the World title gives a lot more information than the pockets, including stories from each culture, and if you get the Audio CD version, your children can play the tracks to their heart's content. These two titles together work really well but don't supply any of the science, so to flesh it out I used Ancient Science: 40 Time-Traveling, World-Exploring, History-Making Activities for Kids, which is also arranged civilization by civilization. The set of science experiments are couched in historical background, are well explained from both the scientific point of view and from the point of view of what each civilization discovered, and most importantly they really work!
So the pockets by themselves are not going to teach the history, but my children LOVED the pocket activities which had them make things that they can handle, that will remind them of what we covered in other ways. I'd also like to recommend Ancient World (World History Series) for your independent readers. It is also arranged by different major civilizations, but adds in some other peoples, e.g. The Celts, and includes spreads on key figures, like Alexander the Great. My 8yo and I both fell in love with this book. My daughter asked me to buy it for her as her very own copy, and she can remember tonnes of the details because the book is so inspiring.
Using these four titles together has created the best learning experience we've had in our home educating (except for classic read-alouds in the evening).

Mystery of the Ancient Seafarers: Ancient Maritime Civilzation Review

Mystery of the Ancient Seafarers: Ancient Maritime Civilzation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Mysteries of the Ancient Seafarers" covers the history, culture, legacy, and influence on exploration and navigation of numerous ancient maritime civilizations. Also, modern discoveries and shipwreck finds are written about in length. Scores of maps, photographs, and pictures make this book both interesting to read and beautiful to behold. The Phoenicians, Greeks, early Romans, Minoans, Egyptians, and other important seafaring civilizations are discussed. Every chapter contains several maps, and more than one chapter has at least two dozen beautiful pictures. Information about ancient trade routes, naval battles, and the development of both merchant and military craft is included.
This is an essential book for any library of ancient history, and the maps and pictures make it a work of art. The paper is of the finest quality, and the cover is sturdy. Anyone interested in ancient or navigational history must have this book.

Omm Sety's Abydos (The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (Ssea) Studies) (Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities Publications) Review

This is written by Omm Sety herself who was previously a priestess in this temple in Ancient Egypt in a former incarnation. It is a most detailed reference work of the Temple of Abydos. I found the illustrations which were explained particularly interesting. An invaluable book if you are considering visiting this temple.

Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt (Historical Dictionaries of Ancient Civilizations and Historical Eras) Review

Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt (Historical Dictionaries of Ancient Civilizations and Historical Eras)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This small book provide the students or the enthusiasts in Egyptology with concise and useful references written by an undisputable scholar in this domain. I have nevertheless some critics to mention.
Although there is a general warning in the reader's notes on the accuracy of the chronology for the earlier periods, the dates given all over the book do not reflect this uncertainty and may leave a wrong impression.
Sometimes simple assumptions not accepted by all scholars are presented as historical facts. For example, the existence of coregencies between two kings usually father and son.
The detailed list of Museum is interesting but out of the scope of an historical dictionary.
The 16 black and white pictures in the centre of the book are of poor quality and not related at all to any particular entry in the dictionary.
It would have been better not to add these pictures.
Some entries belong more to a dictionary on ancient Egyptian civilisation than to an historical dictionary. In one word, I would have preferred more detailed pure historical entries.
More maps, including maps of the Near East and Nubia would have been welcome.
But the main critic is the price of the book. Its size does not justify this price.
It remains nevertheless that the historical entries are concise, clear and of high standard, as expected from this author.
The bibliography is excellent.

An excellent book dealing with all aspects of the various theories of pyramid construction, preparation of the site, quarrying and shipping of stones, etc. The author performs many calculations to determine the number of stones used, weights, number of men needed to lift, number of hauling ropes, stresses and friction coefficients, etc. Also as a bonus there is the complete list of Kings of Egypt in hieroglyphics as well as a beginner's guide to hieroglyphics!

The God Genes Decoded Volume I (Secrets of the universe revealed in the anatomy and evolution of consciousness in ancient Egyptian cosmology, Volume I) Review

The God Genes Decoded Volume I (Secrets of the universe revealed in the anatomy and evolution of consciousness in ancient Egyptian cosmology, Volume I)
Average Reviews:

if you've ever thought/intuited, "it's all connected...why are we fussing and fighting over our expressions of god/divinity??", then this book is for you.
i have never seen kemetic teachings broken down in such a comprehensive, effective way--not to mention rightfully connected to its west african "children" such as orisa (ifa) and vodun--in one place.
newcomers to spirituality/metaphysics will appreciate the practical, plain-language approach and tie-ins to other systems they may be studying. more experienced readers will find the information of 10 volumes complied into one, without the bother of cumbersome translations and unecessarily esoteric language.
also refreshing is the author's clear intent to enlighten, uplift, and educate, not confuse the reader into slavish devotion to his (or any other) "doctrine". at the same time, he emphasizes the need for reputable spiritual education and leadership in the life of the devotee--a delicate balance.
one note: if you have not had direct experience with a traditional african spiritual system, it may be difficult to understand some of the author's experiences.
can't wait for the next volume. thank you for this gift.
peace
