Life in Ancient Egypt Review

Life in Ancient Egypt

Adolf Erman did a very fine job on writing this book. It basically covers what it was like to live along the Nile in Ancient times. His writing is very easy to understand and I recommend it to teachers to read to their classes. Unlike some other books, this one does not just talk about the well known pharaohs but some that I have never even heard of. He also includes many special events. This book was the best I have ever read about Egyptology and covers everything anyone would need to know.

The fullest, most thoroughly detailed account - including much material not found in more recent books - of domestic life, religion, magic, medicine, commerce, and much more in ancient Egypt. Many illustrations reproduce tomb paintings, carvings, and hieroglyphs.

Year of the Hyenas: A Novel of Murder in Ancient Egypt Review

Year of the Hyenas: A Novel of Murder in Ancient Egypt
Average Reviews:

I stumbled on this book, and now can hardly wait till a sequel comes out. The protaganist isn't very likable at first, then you realize that he really is an honest man...and not perfect.
The descriptions of the time and place in Egypt were woven into the story, occasionally an author throws more historical information at you and you find yourself distracted from the plot. Geagley weaves a tale and the context without doing the "look at me, look at how much research I've done" interferance.
I particularly liked how he ends the tail, I saw parts of it coming, but not the whole surprise.
Really worth your time if you like mysteries--and historical settings.

Genesis of the Grail Kings: The Explosive Story of Genetic Cloning and the Ancient Bloodline of Jesus Review

Genesis of the Grail Kings: The Explosive Story of Genetic Cloning and the Ancient Bloodline of Jesus
Average Reviews:

Gardner explains further why Jesus and the Holy bloodline of the Grail is special in this volume. The Annunnaki gods created Adam, who was the first priest king carrying more of the god's genes than the rest of us. This royal line has supposedly preserved its genetics down through time to the present day.
There is an compelling section on how the Hebrew Bible is largely influenced from previous Sumerian works such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. There is also an attempt to explain why the Sumerian was such an anomalously advanced civilization when compared to others at the time. Gardner thinks it's because of the genetic tinkering of the gods with the human line.
Gardner does an interesting analysis on the Moses story in the Bible and comes to the conclusion that he was actually the abdicated king Akhenaton, a half Hebrew, half Egyptian king deposed because of his insistence on imposing a monotheistic god on the Egyptian populace. Various inconsistencies in the Bible are discussed and Gardner comes to the conclusion that it is a corrupted text from the older Sumerian accounts, corrupted for the religious/ political reasons of the Jewish and Christian priesthood.
Gardner stands things on their head, saying that Cain is actually the holy bloodline and not the inferior line of Seth. The Serpent in the Garden is actually the Annunaki god Enki who offers wisdom to humanity as opposed to his brother Enlil, which is the Hebrew god who wants to keep us down. Miriam is not mentioned much in the Bible, but actually she was a prominent religious leader of the Hebrews, but she was shafted by the male priesthood who wanted to get her out the Bible because she was female. Standard blasphemous stuff, you know. Gardner says that our religious beliefs are starting to change because of all the archeological documents that have been discovered which give us a different account of what we have been told traditionally. I suppose it's easy to be fooled with the Biblical stories. People are introduced to them at a young age when their critical faculties are low.
I liked this one better than Bloodline because it didn't get bogged down with a lot of name dropping and intricate genealogies, although these lines are listed and commented on some. I'm really neutral on the revelations. I suppose it will be welcomed by modernists and scorned by traditionalists in the endless chatter of society. I don't know if it will change my personal views much. It was a mind bending trip though. There are actually other authors out there that have looked at archeological evidence and claim that the Bible is accurate, so it comes down to who you want to believe. Everyone has their clever arguments for everything.
And oh yeah, I've read that David Icke has a tape out saying that this guy is nefarious Reptile alien, so who can you trust? Maybe such accusations stem from class conflict or professional jealousy. Both authors cover similar territory and have similar views. Gardner is high born and Icke is well, a former soccer player/hooligan from the projects.

The Orion Prophecy: Will the World Be Destroyed in 2012? Review

The Orion Prophecy: Will the World Be Destroyed in 2012
Average Reviews:

If you will notice the rating in the reviews of this book will either be 1 or 5 stars but no in-betweens. THis is perhaps do to the polarizing nature of the subject and the many fears that people tend to harbor. I found this book to be very illuminating and a confirmation to something that I already knew from either other sources or from pure insight. But regardless of the numerous reviews here nothing can take away from the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in the year 2012? Coincidence? THe book was not written for a scientific journal, so it does sound speculative at times, but once you read and understand the implications and the sources from which the authors have drawn their data, it is highly illuminating.

In the year 2012 the Earth awaits a super catastrophe: its magnetic field will turn over in one go. Phenomenal earthquakes and tidal waves will completely destroy our civilisation. Europe and North America will shift thousands of kilometres northwards into polar climate. Nearly the whole earth's population will perish in the apocalyptic happenings. These dire predictions stem from Mayans and Egyptians -- descendants of the legendary Atlantis. The Atlanteans had highly evolved astronomical knowledge and were able to exactly calculate the previous world-wide flood in 9792 BC. They built tens of thousands of mandjits and escaped to South America and Egypt. In the year 2012 Venus, Orion and several other stars will take the same 'code positions' as in 9792 BC, the year of the previous cataclysm! For thousands of years historical sources have told of a forgotten time capsule of ancient wisdom located in a mythical labyrinth of secret chambers filled with artefacts and documents from the previous flood -- this book gives one possible location.

The Egyptians (Art from the Past) Review

The Egyptians (Art from the Past)

Our class is studying ancient Egypt and this book was so entertaining that we caught on to the concepts a lot easier. It also brought to life the meanings of a lot of the symbols we are learning about. It is well written and the instructions are easy to understand.
ALL of the materials needed were easily found around the house, and that makes it even better, becuase you don't have to go out a buy a lot to be able to do the projects.
I especially enjoyed the section on Cat Mummies along with the Canopic Jars. It goes along great with another book called Cat Mummies.
Even if you don't do the crafts, you will enjoy reading about the different items, as they explain more about the symbols of ancient Egypt. I hope you like this book as much as our class did!

Secret Chamber: The Quest for the Hall of Records Review

Secret Chamber: The Quest for the Hall of Records

What's the connection between the stars of the Orion Constellation and the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt? How old is the Great Sphinx? What is contained in the secret chamber?
Answers to these questions are explored in this book as well as Bauval's journey with dealing with the bureaucracy of Egyptian historical authorities. This book is more of hypothetical book when explaining these mysteries than representations of fact. Bauval feels an intrinsic connection between all these and explores possibilities based on age old allegories and myths.
(Spoiler ahead)
In answering these questions, Bauval postulates the Great Sphinx was created with superior knowledge of technology and architecture taught by another race. This race is the question of great debate and Bauval eventually settles on the Atlantians; a mythical society which technologically advanced. The postulation of the 10,000 BCE creation of the Sphinx and the hypothesis of hidden Atlantian scrolls hidden in the Secret Chamber in the Great Pyramid are the culmination of his hope to find the basis of humanity's genius. We might never know since we might never reach the innards of the Secret Chamber.
(Spoiler over)
This is a great exploration into the unknown and gives credence to what would otherwise be wild guesswork. By providing a good basis, Bauval holds his readers in suspense as to what exactly is in the Secret Chamber. Perhaps such secrets would be discovered with greater technology in the coming years, but if you want a historical episode combined with mythical and hypothetical guesswork, you might want to read this book. I enjoyed it but the end of this book left me with a great pang of loss for what we could have discovered had we opened the Chamber. For that, this book was a great tease, but otherwise, it is a good book.

Bauval asks the questions, is there a secret chamber in the Great Pyramid?, how is the star of David linked to the new world order of the Freemasons? and is the Second Coming of Christ linked to the opening of the fabled Hall of Records?
