Tutankhamun referred to as the kinglet in the early 1900s was described by some archaeologists as an unimportant pharaoh while others passed him off as mere myth. The pharaoh who slept in darkness and obscurity for 3000 years was still hidden under the sand in the Valley of the Kings. Englishmen Howard Carter along with the financial support of George Herbert, Lord Carnarvon would make Tutankhamun a household name and famous around the world.

It was Professor Percy Newberry who introduced eighteen year old Howard Carter to Egypt in 1894. Carter accompanied Newberry as a painter to sketch artifacts, but Carter found is purpose for living. Without university training he learned the skills of an archaeologist. He also learned to read and write hieroglyphics and the histories of the pharaohs. One pharaoh in particular called to him and that was the undiscovered Tutankhamun.

Lord Carnarvon an adventurer himself and never one to back down from a challenge suffered terrible injuries in an automobile accident. Later, he was advised to spend his winters in Egypt where the climate was more suited to his condition. It was there that he developed a taste for excavation and sought Howard Carter.

For several years Carter searched the sands only to discover trinkets. It was believed that the wealthy amateur excavator Theodore Davis had previously exhausted all the treasures to be found. Davis even claimed to have found a cache of Tutankhamun without actually finding the pharaoh. Although frustrated, Carter pursued what was in his heart and soul. On 4 November 1922, Carter's team came across a staircase leading down into the sand. On 24 November, Carter reached a door with a cartouche reading Tutankhamun. But the discovery would be a joy and a curse.

Carter's discovery produced international interest and excitement beyond measure. Government officials, journalists and visitors from around the globe demanded access to the tomb. The battle ensued. Together Carter and Lord Carnarvon would face the climate of World War I, Egypt's National Party, the Antiquities Service, illicit antiquities dealers, the Abd el Rassul clan, Prime Minister Saad Zaghlul, the Egyptian press, envious Egyptologists, a host of self-important nobles, and thieves. The discovery of the century that should have produced scientific and artistic enthusiasm instead produced pettiness, lies, betrayal, corruption and jealousy.

This incredible true story is brought to life by Christian Jacq.

The Kybalion (Tarcher Cornerstone Editions) Review

As a teacher of the mysteries I always offer a list of suggested reading for the seekers attending the workshops. The Kybalion is always near if not actually the top of the list but I've never had an ISBN for the book since my copy is a 1908 original. In preparing my workshop on Transmutation and Change I decided to search for one of the more current editions of the book to have a standard book number. However finding the listing on Amazon is not as much a difficulty as finding a newer edition that follows the original publication.
The portions I read in this Tarcher/Penquin Ed edition follow word for word the writings I have in hand. It will be the edition that will be noting on my list of suggested reading.
As Lori in Florida wrote in her review; this is not an easy book to read. I cannot recall the number of times I have read and mediated on individual chapters, finally teaching the material at free workshops in an effort to assimilate the information. Yet, the effort is worth the time. The giant picture which is Truth, devoid of egotistical labels such as religion, politics or science has been fractured and scattered all over the planet. Each of the above mentioned disciplines holds one or more pieces of the puzzle and often believes that their small portion alone, is the key to viewing the entire picture. The Kybalion (1908) connects the pieces and allows one to see the greater picture.

Who wrote this mysterious guide to the principles of esoteric psychology and worldly success? History has kept readers guessing . . . and now, for the first time, seekers everywhere can discover a widely available edition of a guidebook that has been an underground classic for generations. Here are the teachings of the legendary sage Hermes Trismegistus, reinterpreted for the modern reader. Rumored to be an ancient Egyptian man-god who fathered astrology, alchemy, and other magical arts, the figure of Hermes has fascinated readers of occult literature for generations. Writers in late antiquity named Hermes Trismegistus as the author of their own esoteric teachings, building the mystery of his lineage. Since 1908, The Kybalion—written at the hand of the unnamed "Three Initiates"—has itself generated debate and controversy. Who is behind it? Do its ideas really arise from the secrets of a distant era? And, most important, do they work for the modern seeker? In this concise, engaging guide, the pseudonymous author breaks down Hermetic doctrine into seven compelling principles, and then provides practical methods for how to apply them for self-development in daily life. Here is the definitive edition of a classic of esoteric psychology, now available to readers everywhere.

A Dictionary of Gnosticism Review

A Dictionary of Gnosticism
Average Reviews:

This book is a terrific reference for anyone interested in religion, mysticism, esoterica, ancient history and any form of Gnosis from ancient to modern. Though it would appear at first glance to be a basic dictionary of words rarely used and seldom contemplated in the average everyday world, it is a storehouse of clues to the origins of Western esoterica and literary fancy. Take "AEEIOUO," an entry on page 5. Reminiscent of the Caterpillar's song in Lewis Carol's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" it is also the (Greek) vowels chanted repetitively in certain forms of magic derived from Gnostic texts ... a little online cross-research explains that according to the Nag Hammadi, Aeeiouo is the shape of the Self Begotten Soul. (In Greek, Alice happens to mean "truthful.")
The Nag Hammadi codices are outlined beginning on page 168 where it is explained that the "tractates in the codices are in Coptic, but scholars believe they were originally composed in Greek."
What's a "tractate"? Look it up on page 247 where you can also brush up on the word "transcendence" contrasted with "immanence" on page 124.
A Dictionary of Gnosticism will help you comprehend Plato's Timaeus from which the concept of the "demiurge" originates, as well as modern film concepts. The 1999 movie "The Matrix" is explained on page 156 where "archon" equivalent characters (agents) govern reality "on behalf of the entity that created the world". The demiurge in Gnosticism is compared to the machines in the Matrix.
Try Googling all that! It is wonderful to have this handy Gnostic dictionary at one's fingertips as a quick reference for looking up some of the more obscure terms of Gnosis ("direct spiritual experience") - but it also helps in grasping much of what more mainstream literature and contemporary media have been trying to tell us all along. The truth is in between the lines ... or in the process of "inverse exegesis." Make up your "Nous" or mind and avoid the "interdict" if you are a heretic. Explore Pistis Sophia. Use this quick reference manual of Gnostic terms as a springboard for further inquiry. Ablanathanalba.

This is an exceptional value for around $20.00. The illustrations alone are worth the cost. If you enjoy history OR if you enjoy beautifully-illustrated large books (kids love them around here), buy it. I don't know why the website doesn't allow you to "look inside this book", but the visual impact alone is stunning. The text is well organized and in a reader-friendly font; the books literary style is less fluid than a novel and much more abbreviated; however, it is interesting and easy to read. It is an abbreviated history coffee-table book that will allow history newcomers a tour of history they'll enjoy.

This book provides a compact chronicle of the most significant Egyptian monarchs from the earliest times to the end of Nektanebo II's reign. The lives and achievements of these rulers (famous or lesser-known kings and queens) are clearly summarized and accurately detailed. Well illustrated in black and white, this book is mostly recommended for students.

This book presents a concise account of the lives and times of some of the more significant occupants of the Egyptian throne, from the unification of the country around 3000 BC down to the extinction of native rule just under three millennia later. Some, such as Tuthmosis III, had a major impact on their time, and were remembered by their own people until the very civilization collapsed. Others, such as Tutankhamun, were soon forgotten by the Egyptians themselves, only to burst into popular culture thousands of years after their deaths, as a result of the labors of modern archeologists. Still more remain unknown outside the small circle of professional archeologists, but led lives that call out for wider dissemination. This book sets out to provide a mix of all three categories, in an attempt to present a balanced view of Egyptian kings and their range of achievements.

Make This Egyptian Mummy (Cut-Out Model Series) Review

Make This Egyptian Mummy (Cut-Out Model Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sitting high up on the highest shelf of the tallest bookcase in my family room is an almost real looking, miniature Egyptian sarcophagus. Unbelievably, it's made of paper, glued together by my kids from a little Usborne cutout kit called "Make this Model Egyptian Mummy." I was more than a little skeptical when I ordered it. Boy, was I surprised...
First off, for them (and their mom) this was a highlight of our study of Ancient Egypt.
Second, they (and I) learned a lot about how these things actually looked.
Third, they built it without any adult supervision.
Fourth, they actually got along while doing it.
This is the way homeschool should be.
This model was was a recommended resource in The Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Egypt (Greenleaf Guides).

The Secret Architecture of Our Nation's Capital: The Masons and the Building of Washington, D.C. Review

The Secret Architecture of Our Nation's Capital: The Masons and the Building of Washington, D.C.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's generally well known that many of the Founding Fathers were Masons. Ovason presents convincing evidence that Masonic symbolism is hard-wired into the layout of our nation's capital.
To do so, he reviews the beginnings of the city: Washington's selection of this site for the new nation's capital, the design competitions, the building projects. Having lived in DC at one time, this alone made the book worthwhile. Ovason then overlays the city with all the astrological symbolism that can be found around the district. Some of it is in the open and is plain for all to see. Other things are hidden. Better yet, alignments between zodiacal symbols have meanings and the author careful spells it all out.
I won't give away the complete story, but Ovason has discovered something in the layout of Constitution Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and the Old Post Office that locks heaven and earth together and gives literally concrete meaning to celestial symbology. Washington is the New Rome, and our Founding Fathers carefully imprinted their hopes for the future in the very streets of the city.
You'll never look at Washington, DC the same way ever again.
